On Conversation With a Devil, Andre Nickatina returns to center stage with an ambitious "concept" record recording the life of our protagonist, Dre Dog. Unfortunately, that's about as good as it gets. The first song is just absolutely repulsive, made up of rhymes that could have been taken from a middle-school poetry workshop. Rhyming Sugar Ray with Sade is a bit shy of genius, but right from the get-go it is blatantly obvious that Madonna recruited Nickatina to write the lyrics for her rap in "American Life." With such bouts of prose as "It was 1984, I was on a plane that was about to soar" and "my girlfriend drinks Coronas and knows about the Ayatollah," Eminem and Nas can rest peacefully at night, knowing that their crowns will not be challenged by Nicky. The monotone delivery is reminiscent of some old-school MCs, but even old schools ...

| | Robert Calvert Hype (Songs Of Tom Mahler) CD (1980)
Hell's Kitchen songs
$13.65 "Hype" was the soundtrack to the novel of the same title, which was the soundtrack to the play of the same title, and features one of the all time Calvert classics, "Lord of the Hornets." In addition, this CD reissue comes with some bonus tracks comprising of different mixes & demo versions of some of the tracks on the original album.
Released to accompany one of the best rock novels of all time, former Hawkwind vocalist Calvert's Hype is part concept album, part soundtrack, and wholly the most underrated project Calvert was ever involved in. The novel, also titled Hype, follows the short career of Tom Mahler, a rising rock star whose career is marked by one of the most ambitious media hypes of all time -- and ended by the greatest masterstroke of all, a bullet in the head on the eve of his breakthrough. The album, then, draws from Mahler's ...

| | James McCandless We Had A Big Back Yard CD (2008)
Hell's Kitchen CD music
$18.99 “McCandless is indisputably one of the area’s finest song craftsmen…Intelligent folk music that defies easy classification…” Mike Parrish, Chicago Tribune“Imagine you’re browsing through an antique store. There’s some junk there, and some flashy, expensive stuff. Then you run across a simple but beautifully designed and finished piece, made entirely by hand. That’s what McCandless’ songs are like. When asked about his influences, he is likely to mention the Dutch painter Peter Brueghel,” Andrew Calhoun, Waterbug Records“There’s a rough edge to McCandless and his work, but maybe it’s because he’s saying something edgy. Many of his songs are born of a compassion and a responsibility, a reason he’s out there singing despite his claim to just be courting the tapping toes of the record-buying public.” Frank Tedesso, The ReaderMcCandless draws on his personal experiences in Montana, Illinois and Ireland, whether real or partly imagined. Who said history has to be accurate anyway? If you say, ”I went to the store to buy a loaf of bread”, what good is that? But if you say, “I went to Blarney Castle to pick some shamrocks and was hit on the head with a croquet mallet and kidnapped by The Royal Family”, now you’ve got something! In other words, Jim is a big bullshitter. But then, so is the 2000 Year Old Man! So, I ask you…who cares? His music has been recorded by Kat Eggleston, Martin Hayes & Dennis Cahill, Jimmy Moore, Sean Keane, Arty McGlynn, Nollaig Casey, Bell & Shore, Susan Shore & Don Stiernberg, Dan Bern, and Body Parts; he has worked with Julianne Macarus, John Williams, Hayes & Cahill, Larry Nugent, Gan Ainm, Liz Carroll, Buddy Mondlock, Frank Tedesso, Jano, Andrew Calhoun, Victor Sanders, Brian Anderson, Jim Craig and Tom Dundee.Jim has also performed with P.J. Hayes, Greg Brown, Joan Baez, Odetta, Chris Smither, Sean O’Driscoll, Claudia Schmidt, John Fahey, Tim O’Brien, Jim Post, Natalie McMaster ...
