With Long Time By, their second album, Orso delivered a strange, eclectic, and yet very cohesive CD. The core trio of Phil Spirito (guitar, banjo, vocals), Gillian Lisée (keyboards, guitar, banjo, vocals), and Ben Massarella (drums) is augmented by Brian Deck (electronics, remixing) on the most experimental tracks and by Tim Rutili (guitar, piano), Duke Lee (electronics), Julie Liu (viola), and Kelly McCracken (cello). In general, Orso's sound is very laid-back and because of that related to post-rock aesthetics, although closer to Low than Tortoise. These songs have something of the feeling of a very depressive circus, jobless cowboys, and drug-induced sleepiness in the likes of Low. But they also have the quirkiness of Frank Pahl (yes, the banjo and harmonium sounds account for much of this impression) and a healthy dose of humor in their instrumental pieces. The writing could be described as "simple yet deranged." Added electronics, studio effects, and overall production put these 21st century folk songs in a surprising context. ~ François Couture

Simply put, there is no band that does anything close to what Outkast does. Big Boi & Andre 3000 have consistently managed to maintain mainstream success while obliterating the limits of what is considered to be hip-hop. On Mouthfuls, the Fruit Bats tone down the twang of their debut, Echolocation, and offer something closer to a mix of late-'60s/early-'70s folk and bubblegum shot through with unpredictable electronic elements that, paradoxically, make the group's music seem even more homemade and organic. Most of the songs have sunny, winding melodies and arrangements that twist and turn until they end up in a completely different place than where they began; "A Bit of Wind" starts out as a simple, jangly singalong and gradually adds a brass band, strings, and flutes until it becomes a sweeping pop symphony. The lilting vocals and bittersweet harmonies on "Rainbow Sign" and "Magic Hour" call to mind the Fruit Bats' labelmates, the Shins, although the Fruit Bats' brand of summery, psych-tinged pop is much mellower.
