Judy Garland and her fellow restaurant waitresses civilize a rough-and-tumble 1890's New Mexico town in a charming concoction that includes 1946's Oscar-winning Best Song "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe." Also stars John Hodiak, Ray Bolger, Angela Lansbury and Cyd Charrise. A frothy musical about the romantic misadventures of the Harvey girls, waitresses employed by the Old West Harvey Restaurant chain. Their ladylike behavior had a civilizing effect on their wild frontier patrons. Despite the rather thin story, the great cast and fun music make this worth a watch. An eastern gal heads west and goes to work in an elegant railroad station restaurant. Johnny Mercer/Harry Warren score. Academy Award Nominations: 2, including Best Scoring of a Musical Picture. Academy Awards: Best Song ("On The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe"). Harvey Girls Reviews: "...[A] big, likable musical....Great comic dancing from Ray Bolger..."

| | Dancer In The Dark DVD (1999) Widescreen
Harvey Girls review
$14.45 The final installment in Lars von Trier's Golden Heart trilogy (which includes BREAKING THE WAVES and THE IDIOTS), DANCER IN THE DARK takes the director's original blend of heightened pseudorealism, fabricated melodrama, and the priciples of the Dogme 95 genre to a dangerously intense level. The story concerns Selma (Björk), a Czech immigrant living in 1964 Washington State with her 12-year-old son, Gene (Vladan Kostic). On the verge of blindness, Selma spends her days working in a factory, as well as performing other odd jobs, in order to save up enough money to pay for an operation that will cure Gene of the same disease. To pass the time, Selma fantasizes that her own life is a musical, one in which her friends join her in sweeping song-and-dance routines. After her neighbor Bill (David Morse) discovers Selma's hidden savings and steals them from her, she is forced to perform an act of salvation that will condemn her forever. As the innocent Selma, Björk is one of the most fragile and heartbreaking presences the screen has ever seen. Her unbearably moving performance is enough to keep the viewer mesmerized throughout, even amid the story gaps and inconsistencies. Featuring compassionate supporting turns by Catherine Deneuve and Peter Stormare, DANCER IN THE DARK is an unrelenting gut punch that will have sympathetic audiences ...
| | Young Girls Of Rochefort DVD (1967)
Harvey Girls DVD
$15.05 A joyous musical that outdoes its Hollywood predecessors with naive romance, decadent art direction and an appearance by the legendary Gene Kelly, THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT, a follow up to Demy's previous collaboration with Catherine Deneuve and composer Michel Legrand, is entirely sung. A pair of sisters (Deneuve and her real life sister Francoise Dorleac) who teach and compose music in the French town of Rochefort seek love and success in Paris. When two young men with a travelling carnival come to town, they help the sisters put on a song and dance number that gives them instant success, while simultaneously, a love struck sailor finds his ideal woman in Deneuve. To top it off, even the mother of the two women finds a long lost love.
"Young Girls of Rochefort" is the lighthearted story of twin sisters, Delphine and Solange, living in Rochefort, Paris. Delphine is a dancing teacher and Solange composes and teaches the piano. Maxence is a poet and a ...

| | South Park - The Hits: Vol. 1 DVDs (2006)
Harvey Girls review
$21.35 What began as a construction-paper film short evolved into a veritable pop-culture phenomenon for Trey Parker and Matt Stone's outrageous animated comedy series, SOUTH PARK. Centered on the hilarious misadventures of four potty-mouthed grade-schoolers in the perpetually wintry environs of South Park, Colorado, the series skewers the vagaries of the modern American cultural landscape with politically incorrect humor and satirical plotlines ranging from homophobia and terrorism to boy bands and talking poo. This collection ...
