Together with his attractive, honey-voiced sidekick Engelina, DJ Encore, a.k.a. Andreas Hemmeth, has been the toast of his native Denmark since 2001, when the duo's massive hit "I See Right Through to You" went double platinum in that country. It's included here along with several similar-sounding efforts, a perfect, silky-smooth confection of Euro techno-pop that's both irresistible and disposable, and which should make the couple a lot more friends in the US. Each of the tracks here could be massive hits; they're all uniformly infectious and ubiquitous in the same way that Cher's "Believe" was, and their transparent poppiness bears repeated playing. DJ Encore doesn't need a message to get his point across--the trance-like groove is the thing here, and the less offensive it is the more it'll seduce you.

| | DJ Encore Ultra Dance 02 CDs (2002)
Intuition
$15.85 Euro trance spinner and remix artist DJ Encore shows he has more strings to his bow than his involvement with the satin-smooth Engelina with this extended collection of dance platters chosen and mixed by the funky Dane himself. All the cuts on ULTRA DANCE 02 bear the unmistakable, grandiose stamp of Euro disco; some of them, such as Moby's "We Are All Made of Stars" will be familiar to even the most peripheral clubber, while others, notably the left-field remix of Yoko Ono's "Open Your Box" (originally the B-side of John Lennon's "Cold Turkey") will come as a pleasant, if mildly shocking, surprise. Of course there's the obligatory Dirty Vegas "Days Go By" remix and DJ Encore's own "See Right Through To You," both of which come high in the ear candy stakes, but it's tracks such as the Chemical Brothers' "Star Guitar" and 4 Strings' "Take Me Away" that provide ...

| | June Christy Ballads For Night People CD (1998) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Intuition
$9.29 Through her decade-long tenure on Capitol Records, the singer June Christy rarely recorded a less-than-stellar session. Most of her LPs were carefully programmed, arranged, and, of course, sung. (As with a classical singer, these professional habits only enhanced Christy's artistry.) BALLADS FOR NIGHT PEOPLE from 1959 also boasts relaxed, jazzy arrangements by the singer's husband, saxophonist Bob Cooper, a fellow alumnus of Stan Kenton's band. There are two Duke Ellington classics,"Do Nothin' Till You Hear From Me" and "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," a definitive version of Kurt Weill's "My Ship," and an arresting performance of Rodgers & Hart's "Bewitched (Bothered & Bewildered)" which dramatically opens the set.
The music on Ballads for Night People (not reissued on CD) features the popular singer June Christy in a ballad-oriented program. She is backed by trombonist Frank Rosolino, a French horn, a sax section, a rhythm section, and a harp, all arranged by her husband, tenor saxophonist Bob Cooper. One in a long string of Christy's Capitol recordings, this fine set (highlighted by "Bewitched," "Do Nothin' 'Till You Hear from Me," "Kissing Bug," and "My Ship") holds its own with the singer's best sets. [This version of the album contains bonus material.] ~ Scott Yanow

| | Tom Petty Highway Companion CD (2006)
Intuition
$13.55 Tom Petty's third album without the Heartbreakers, 2006's HIGHWAY COMPANION, finds the revered singer-songwriter reuniting with fellow Traveling Wilbury Jeff Lynne (formerly of Electric Light Orchestra) for the first time since their fruitful late-1980s/early-'90s collaborations, which yielded FULL MOON FEVER (Petty's initial solo outing) and INTO THE GREAT WIDE OPEN. The resulting record recalls the former disc in particular, albeit with a shimmering 21st-century sound, ...
