Personnel includes: Barry Manilow (vocals, arranger, keyboards). Producers: Barry Manilow, Ron Dante. Compilation producer: Steve Bartels. Recorded between 1973 and 1984. Includes liner notes by David Wild. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Liner Note Author: David Wild. Photographers: Matthew Rolston; Greg Gorman. Arranger: Barry Manilow. Unlike some other MOR pop stars, Barry Manilow never enjoyed the sort of swinging-hipster revival that made him a hot name to drop, ironically or otherwise. Incredibly enough, until the release of Ultimate Manilow in early 2002, there was no comprehensive single-disc hits package on the market -- a shockingly long wait for one of the most popular hitmakers of the '70s, hip or not (and clearly the demand was there; Ultimate Manilow entered the charts at number three). The 20 selections on Ultimate Manilow are arranged in the chronological order in which they became hits, and the emphasis here is on hits -- i.e., chart singles. Between 1974 and 1981, Manilow reached the Top 40 20 times, and 18 of those songs are present; the other two (minor early-'80s hits) were bumped by "Bandstand Boogie," Manilow's well-known version of the American Bandstand theme song, and "When October Goes," a track from his 1984 jazz-pop album, 2:00 AM Paradise Café. It's an extremely straightforward approach to a greatest-hits compilation, which is actually something to be commended given Arista's botched Whitney Houston best-of (where they omitted several songs to protect back-catalog sales, although that's not likely a concern with Manilow). So is anything missing? Nothing crucial; the only potential disappointment is for fans who love Manilow's detours into flamboyant, Broadway-style production numbers. The concentration on hits means that several great B-sides in that vein ("New York City Rhythm," "Riders to the Stars," "Beautiful Music," the endearingly awkward "Jump Shout Boogie") are not included. But that's really a small quibble, and there simply wasn't room for them anyhow. Ultimate Manilow lives up to its title by including everything a casual fan would want. The only question is, what took so long? ~ Steve Huey Barry Manilow's commercial heyday may have been confined from the mid-'70s to early '80s, but the true testament to his unflagging popularity is the fact that this 2002 compilation debuted in the Top 5 of Billboard's Top 200 Albums chart. This 20-pack of classic pop features all of the Brooklyn native's big hits starting with the 1974 chart-topper "Mandy" right through to 1982's "Somewhere Down The Road". Anyone who remotely remembers the '70s will feel like they've stepped into a time machine when they hear radio staples like "It's A Miracle", "Looks Like We Made It", "Can't Smile Without You" and "Copacabana (At The Copa)". Widely recognized for multiple talents that include formidable musical chops, production skills, and song writing, Manilow's genius can be heard in his use of a Chopin prelude in "Could It Be Magic," and in the melancholy "When October Goes," featuring Johnny Mandel lyrics donated by his widow. Manilow's eye for a great song also found him scoring great chart success with songs written by others including Beach Boy Bruce Johnston's "I Write The Songs" and former Mott The Hoople frontman Ian Hunter's "Ships". Barry Manilow Ultimate Manilow Songs Ultimate Manilow Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews One of Barry's greatest I have this CD already and just got this one for a Christmas gift. Manilow Mania ! He writes the songs that makes the whole world sing!! I'm so happy to have this collection in my possession!! Didn't think I would be able to find Manilow's best music on 1 CD - but I did and I love it! Submitted by stanleysimon (Brooklyn, NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
ANOTHER compilation; as always, WORTH IT! i was a bit surprised to see 20 tracks crammed onto 1 CD - but a double disc was simply unnecessary. this collection represents barry's 8th "greatest hits" type release on CD here in the US. there have been countless more import discs. any manilow fan will tell you.... geeezzz, ANOTHER hits package?? but there's really no such thing as overkill when it comes to manilow music. this CD boasts 18 billboard TOP 40 hits. "bandstand boogie" and "when october goes" are also included. songs here are from 1974 through 1984. it's a great way to get MOST of manilow's singles catalog on one disc. buying this CD will NOT disappoint most. none of the tracks were edited; in fact, we even get the full versions of "could it be magic" and "copacabana". BUY IT NOW!! Submitted by dgcuddy (Atlanta, GA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Manilow is God! This album slams. Manilow is a maniac, blatently lying to you on "I Write the Songs", weeping like an emasculated bitch in many of the tunes and showing his bitter cynical angst in "Trying to get that feeling again". Barry's ultrapop is bubblegum drek from begining to end yet is infinitely listenable, particularly when everyone is very drunk and singing along. Truly a guilty pleasure. While ANTHOLOGY provides a comprehensive overview of Bryan Adams's career and SO FAR SO GOOD anthologizes his early hits, THE BEST OF ME shows the Canadian pop-rocker's staying power by focusing on his finest work from the '90s onward. There are a couple of older tracks (rockers "Summer of '69" and "Run to You") thrown in for good measure, but the spotlight here is on Adams the balladeer, belting out lighter-waving, larger-than-life ...
| | England Dan Nights Are Forever CD (1976)
Ultimate Manilow
$9.69 Nights Are Forever was the breakthrough album for Dan Seals and John Coley after some sincere and excellent work on A&M Records in the early '70s. Two of their biggest hits were the title track and the beautiful "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight." Those songs are a good indication of the fine performances this 1976 album contains. The duo's originals like "Long Way Home" and the Dan Fogelberg-ish "Westward Wind" could have been hits as well displaying superb musicianship and delicate vocals. This album is very much a companion piece ...

Ultimate Manilow
$55.89 LIVE AT THE FILLMORE is a live release by L.A. roots rockers Los Lobos and includes 35 tracks featuring "Tears Of God," "Kiko And The Lavender Moon," "I Got Loaded," and "Rita." CD contains bonus DVD. While Los Lobos have made a handful of great albums during the course of their career, you have to see them live to fully appreciate their status as one of America's best rock bands. Their material is smart and wildly eclectic, they're superb musicians whose interplay has been honed to a fine edge by years of road work, and they know that great chops will never be as important as a strong dose of sweaty enthusiasm if you want to get over with an audience; put it all together and you get a group that never disappoints a crowd. It's a bit surprising that, after more than thirty years together, no one ever thought to record a Los Lobos live album, but in the summer of 2004, as the band was celebrating their official 30th Anniversary, they brought in a camera crew and a mobile recording truck to document a two-night stand at San Francisco's Fillmore Auditorium; the results were released as a DVD in late 2004, and now an audio-only version of Live at the Fillmore has come out on CD. Given how impressive a backlog of material this band has, it's almost inevitable that Live at the Fillmore would be a bit of a disappointment, given that there's only so many of los Lobos' many great songs can appear on a single disc, especially since the band puts the strongest focus on their most recent material in this set. But with an eye towards history, they do offer a taste from most ...
