Personnel: Barbra Streisand, Kris Kristofferson (vocals); Terry Paul, Jerry McGee, Stephen Bruton, Sammy Creason, Donnie Fritts, Mike Utley, Booker T. Jones, Dean Heagen, Art Munson, Charles Owens, Bobby Shew, Jack Redmond, Clydie King, Venetta Fields. Engineers: Phil Ramone, Dan Wallin, Tom Vicari. Digitally remastered by Stephen Marcussen. Though it is credited to Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson, A Star Is Born is in effect the soundtrack album to the motion picture of the same name, a rock-oriented retelling of the story that had been filmed three times before. That it is not billed as a soundtrack only indicates that the album contains the songs featured in the film, but not the score. Of course, the main drawing card here is "Love Theme From 'A Star Is Born' (Evergreen)," the number one hit. But the rest of the album is slight. Streisand isn't much of a rock singer and these aren't much as rock songs (the songwriters include Paul Williams and Rupert Holmes). For his part, Kristofferson sounds even more gravelly than usual, and he isn't even growling his own compositions, which doubtless would have been superior to what he's been given to sing. Nevertheless, spurred by the hit single and the box office success of the film, A Star Is Born was the best-selling album of Barbra Streisand's career up to this point. ["Evergreen," co-written by Streisand and Williams, won Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal.] ~ William Ruhlmann When Streisand and Kristofferson, two very different '70s pop culture icons, united for the remake of the classic film A STAR IS BORN, few expected how well their distinctive styles would complement each other. Streisand was always the singers' singer, possessed of a golden voice and almost superhuman pitch and tone control, while country-rock rebel Kristofferson was from the John Prine/Bob Dylan school of singing, where emotion and intent mattered far more than proper pitch. Yet Streisand's silvery tones and Kristofferson's gruff, three-packs-a-day drawl never seem at odds on this soundtrack. Admittedly, on tunes like "Watch Closely Now" and "The Woman in the Moon," the characters the singers portray are more exaggerated versions of their real selves, but it all works, especially the instant pop standard "Evergreen."

Fabulous soundtrack album in Barbra's music catalog!!! The songs on this soundtrack are wonderful. From Kris' opening song, "Watch Closely Now" to Barbra's closing medley of "With One More Look at You/Watch Closely Now", this soundtrack is fun to listen to. Barbra's vocals are magnificent, as usual. I am not quite familiar with Kris' solo work, but for this album, he was OK. I also like "Woman in the Moon", "I Believe in Love", and "Queen Bee". I have this album on LP (3 copies) and the CD. The front cover image is alright, but also shockingly intimate I might add. The back cover picture of Barbra in a red silhouette is nice too. The movie is wonderful as well. Check it out sometime, and if you folks don't yet have this soundtrack on CD, get it; it will be a nice addition to your Barbra Streisand music library. $18.95 Music and faith are the twin passions that are, it seems, destined to be thoroughly entwined. They certainly are so in my life. Musically, my tastes have always wandered into, across and through many genres and styles. I was raised on classical music in early years, then wandered through pop into progressive rock and onward to jazz – first of a fusion style, but lately going back in time to the creative explosion of the late 50s and early 60s. What I have always loved in music, whatever the style, is when the players are clearly giving it their all. Yet, sheer technique has never been enough for me. If there’s no feeling, no emotion, then there’s no point.Christianity is much the same. If we don’t give it our all, it’s not worth doing, and if there’s no feeling, no emotion, then it’s pointless. Paul wrote that if there is no love, then anything we might do in the name of Christianity is worthless. I must agree. I will also say that faith is not something to be tucked away except on Sundays and special occasions, but is supposed to inform everything we do. It is to be applied in raising a family, in pursuing work, and most assuredly it is to shape and color our artistic expression. For “On the Verge of a Promise” I have surrounded myself with players of exceptional talent and taken them along on an emotional journey of faith with me. Each of the songs in this collection finds its meaning from the life of Caleb, seeks to tell the untold story of his life, although mostly without words. They are at once songs to be thoroughly enjoyed and songs to be contemplated. Each song pursues its piece of the story in its own unique style, never quite preparing you for what follows, yet always connecting.“Where’s Caleb” interweaves two different ...
