| | John Scofield Uberjam CD John Scofield Discography of CDs
(3 Customer Reviews)
UBERJAM was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Jazz Album.
With the ascendancy of acid jazz and jam bands in the early '90s, funky jazz guitarist John Scofield suddenly found himself curiously in vogue for his blend of fusion and funk. The band Scofield presents on UBERJAM is the one that's accompanied him at many a jam-friendly festival, and even the guest artists (saxman Karl Denson, keyboardist John Medeski) hail from that scene. These facts, along with the album's title, seem to suggest Scofield fully embracing his jam-god role, and why not? Improvisation is what jazz is all about anyway.
As one would expect, nearly every tune here is driven by a hard-grooving funk rhythm courtesy of Jesse Murphy's kinetic bass and Adam Deitch's deep-pocket drums. Of course, there are variations; "Jungle Fiction" finds Scofield ringing changes over a contemporary "jungle" beat, and the more laid-back, acoustic-tinged "Tomorrow Land" is the closest thing to a jazz tune. Still, it's a thrill to hear a gifted guitarist like Scofield giving his talents free reign over a percolating backbeat full of funk, R&B, and hip-hop flavoring.

$12.55 On A GO GO, Scofield teams with Generation X funksters Medeski, Martin and Wood for an album of greasy grooves and hip downtown sonorities. The leader's guitar and John Medeski's keyboards weave and sway in a laid back slink over the lazy, ringing back beats of Billy Martin. And just when you think the groove has bent and twisted to the ...

| | Robben Ford Blue Moon CD (2002)
Uberjam
$7.29 Over the years many people have asked, "Will the real Robben Ford please stand up?" Those are the people who wonder if the singer/guitarist is really a blues-rock vocalist or a jazz fusion instrumentalist at heart. But truth be told, Ford is many different things. He is genuinely eclectic, which is why one never really knows from one album to the next what direction he will take. Blue Moon, Ford's first album for Concord Jazz, is primarily a vocal date. Ford gets in his share of inspired guitar solos, and he provides one instrumental: the gutsy "Indianola." But most of the time he sings. And as a vocalist, he favors an exciting blend of blues, rock, and soul on tracks like "Something for the Pain," "Don't Deny Your Love," and "The Way You Treated Me (You're Gonna Be Sorry)." ...

$15.39 ALEGRIA won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. "Sacajawea" won for Best Instrumental Composition.
ALEGRIA is a truly remarkable return to form for Wayne Shorter. Despite a number of missteps in the years since his acclaimed early-'60s releases JUJU and SPEAK NO EVIL, the revered tenor saxman and composer enjoyed a renaissance with 2002's well-received FOOTPRINTS LIVE and this collection of meticulously executed tunes. ALEGRIA recalls the Shorter ...
| | John Scofield Up All Night CD (2003)
Uberjam
$15.59 It isn't surprising that John Scofield spent some time in Miles Davis' employ. Like that innovative trumpeter, Scofield has always had a restless spirit. One never knows what to expect when a new Scofield album arrives; Up All Night, it turns out, pretty much picks up where its predecessor, Überjam, leaves off. Like Überjam, Up All Night is a fusion effort that manages to be intellectual and funky at the same time. Of course, intellect and funkiness don't automatically cancel one another out -- Davis demonstrated that on many occasions. But some artists have a hard time balancing the two in an effective way. Scofield, however, inhabits a place in which ...

$15.15 The debut of singer/multi-instrumentalist Zach Condon (aka Beirut), 2006's GULAG ORKESTAR marks the arrival of a precocious talent. It's a lushly arranged album that reveals Condon's unabashed adoration of Eastern European folk music, gilded with swaying accordion lines, rapturous string passages, and jangling percussion that seem wholly rooted in traditional Slavic music (see the waltz-like "Prenzlauerberg")--making its creation by a ...
