Bongolution, Bongo Maffin's fifth album, offers up an infectious multi-culti mix of raga, Afro-pop, dance grooves, and Latin music. The band, which is a trio of South African and Zimbabwean musicians on this album, infuse all of their music with a uniquely urban African style, even as they draw inspiration from around the world. Nowhere is that more evident than on "Mamacita" which features "a touch of Spanish for fun, township sass, Tswana rap, and Shona rhythm" according to the liner notes. Every song seems to be infused with a positive, pro-community vibe and healing energy, adding a little intellectual weight to beats that would otherwise be light and airy enough to float away on their own. Other highlights include the opener, "Laduma Izulu," and "Twasa." ~ Stacia Proefrock

| | Laura Pausini Io Canto CD (2006)
Bongolution music CDs
$7.55 Laura Pausini, a multilingual Italian pop singer who won a Latin Grammy in 2005 for Best Female Pop Vocal Album, decided to record an album of cover songs when she returned to the studio to record her follow-up effort. This is a fairly standard practice for pop/rock artists, of course, especially in the wake of a mammoth success like the one Pausini experienced with Resta in Ascolto (released concurrently in Spanish as Escucha in the Americas). Yo Canto (likewise released concurrently in Spanish) is a somewhat unusual covers album, however, for it's comprised of Italian pop/rock songs from the 1970s, '80s, and '90s -- few, if any, of which will be familiar to listeners across the Atlantic. Pausini performs the songs in a manner similar to that of Resta in Ascolto: the songs are heavily produced, layered with guitar, bass, and drums in addition ...

| | John Prine In Spite Of Ourselves CD (1999)
Bongolution music CDs
$13.55 Principally recorded at Jack's Tracks and MCA Publishing Studio, Nashville, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by John Prine and Jim Rooney.
All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
IN SPITE OF OURSELVES was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
John Prine's first post-neck cancer studio album finds him duetting on a slew of country classics and rustic obscurities with some high-caliber talent. Throughout IN SPITE OF OURSELVES, the main theme bounces between lovin' and cheatin' in different circumstances, be it swapping spouses ("Let's Invite Them Over," with Iris DeMent) or being discreet in a small town ("In a Town This Size," with Dolores Keane). Backed by crying pedal steel, mournful dobros, and rippling piano, Prine makes the kind of classic country that was pouring out of Nashville in the late '60s and early '70s.
Prine's laconic singing style meshes perfectly with such contemporary country superstars as Trisha Yearwood (Roger ...
| | Ella Fitzgerald Harold Arlen Songbook Vol. 2 CD (1961)
Bongolution songs
$12.65 Though it was recorded in the same August 1960 sessions as the first volume of THE HAROLD ARLEN SONGBOOK, volume two is anything but leftovers. While perhaps not a household name to the extent of previous Ella Fitzgerald Songbook honorees Duke Ellington, Rodgers & Hart, or Cole Porter, Harold Arlen--alongside his usual collaborator, lyricist Johnny Mercer--is every bit their equal as a songwriter.
Billy May arranged and conducted these big-band sessions, and his typically swinging charts suit both Fitzgerald's magnificent voice and the ingratiating material beautifully. Arlen's tunes range from mournful ...
| | Very Best Of John Coltrane CD (2001) Digipak
Bongolution album
$11.45 Recorded in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, New York, New York and Newport, Rhode Island between 1961 and 1964. Includes liner notes by David Wild.
Digitally remastered by Allan Tucker (Foothill Digital, New York, New York).
This isn't the first CD that has had the title The Very Best of John Coltrane, and one can safely assume that it won't be the last. The focus of this 74-minute collection is Coltrane's Impulse output -- specifically, modal post-bop that he recorded from 1961-1964. The disc doesn't get into the blistering atonal free jazz he embraced from 1965-1967, which is just as well because even though much of that material is brilliant, it isn't for everyone -- at least not novices and casual listeners who are exploring the saxophonist's work for the first time. And for those who ...
