| | Richard Rodgers Victory At Sea CD (1992)
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4; Francesca Da Rimini
$10.09 (MP3 Available for Download) The 1952 NBC series Victory at Sea was one of the earliest network documentary series to capture the public's imagination in a serious way, and one of the more enduring offshoots was the music by Richard Rodgers, which was recorded by RCA-Victor in what ultimately became a series of four LPs. Rodgers was chosen by series producer Henry Salamon based on his being the "leading American composer of his day," a somewhat exalted (though understandable) judgement for a man who was most closely associated with the Broadway stage and Hollywood. The albums were popular, probably due in part to the fact that the music was accessible and unchallenging, and that it insinuated itself for months into the household of seemingly every American family that had someone fighting in World War II -- and that a lot of veterans owned stereo systems in the late '50s, and these recordings took full advantage of stereo's two-channel sound separation. As to the music itself, one finds on listening to it 40+ years later that a little goes a long way. Rodgers devised a straightforward melodic score whose most inspired moments (such as the main title theme) seem to have been lifted from the early work of Ralph Vaughan Williams. An astonishing amount of what is on this CD (which runs 67 minutes) is banal, predictable musical accompaniment, broken up with a few surprises, ...

$8.15 | | Classic Yo-Yo / Yo-Yo Ma CD (2001)
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4; Francesca Da Rimini
$12.09 (MP3 Available for Download) The album begins, appropriately, with his remarkable account of the Prelude from J. S. Bach's Cello Suite No. 1, continuing through to an eclectic assortment that includes Piazzolla tangos, a Gershwin Prelude, and an excerpt from Tan Dun's score for the film CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, as well as pieces by Fauré, Brahms, and Dvorák. The disc also features tracks from the "Appalachian" collaborations with Edgar Meyer and Mark O'Connor, and several bonuses in the form of previously unreleased material: Piazzolla's Tango Sensation: FEAR and new recordings of John Williams' "American Collection" Theme and the Shaker hymn "Simple Gifts" featuring Alison Krauss. CLASSIC YO-YO is an excellent introduction for the uninitiated, but also holds value for anyone already familiar with the work of this extraordinary artist.
To categorize CLASSIC YO-YO as simply a greatest-hits collection would be inaccurate. This compilation offers a glimpse of the breadth of a great artist's ability. It effectively conveys the essence of Yo-Yo Ma, not simply the virtuosity of a ...

Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4; Francesca Da Rimini
$8.19 Andre Previn, Ray Brown and Mundell Lowe play the music of Duke Ellington and Harold Arlen.
This was André Previn's second album after his long, symphonically enforced absence from jazz, and it sounds noticeably more fluid and relaxed than his first. No longer apprehensive about dusting off his old skills, Previn is delightfully confident and breezy (dig his sly turns on "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "C Jam Blues"), taking some chances as he re-phrases and paraphrases a collection of revivified standards, mostly Harold Arlen and assorted Duke Ellington. Even if Previn, that noted wit, sometimes sounds as if he is kidding the pants ...

Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4; Francesca Da Rimini
$18.99 The St. Petersburg Chamber Soloists (formerly the "Saint-Petersburg Chamber Players") is made up of five permanent members who perform in ensembles ranging from duo to quintet. Performances of the sextet and octet literature are undertaken with the addition of guest artists. Their repertoire consists of works spanning three centuries, including Russian chamber music.Tradition unites the members of the St. Petersburg Chamber Soloists as all its members are graduates of the world renowned St.Petersburg Conservatoire. Its fundamental repertoire is directly linked to this Conservatoire, whose founders and directors were the very soul of 19th century Romantic Russian musical literature: Rubinstein, Glasunov, Wieniawski and Auer. Their virtuosic technique, allied with a profound sense of lyricism, sets this ensemble apart. The current Ensemble has been together since 1995. However, its origins go back more than ten years, when Alexei Ludevig first began organising and performing chamber music concerts in his native city of Leningrad. Since then, The St.Petersburg Chamber Soloists have performed to popular and critical acclaim throughout the Russia, Western Europe, and the United States. *********"Dvorak is everywhere and always the melodist, and while the Sony disc, featuring "all-star band" of Emanuel Ax, Isac Stern, Jaime Laredo and Yo-Yo Ma are certainly the more refined and elegant (and more sweetly lyrical), there is an energy and rawness to the performance of the St. Petersburg Chamber Players that gets closer to the heart of Dvorak's folk inspirations."Ednomton ...
