Collectables' ten-volume History of Rock series doesn't have the decades-spanning scope that the title implies; instead, it pretty much stops at the mid-'60s and covers rock's early years, with a few inclusions from the latter half of the '60s. While each disc contains 14 songs that are smartly chosen, it's the type of series that only truly appeals to two kinds of people: those who are looking to own these songs on CD for the first time, and the unfamiliar who want a decent introduction to the era. Highlights on the fifth volume include the Turtles' "Elenore," the Capitols' "Cool Jerk," the Box Tops' "Sweet Cream Ladies, Forward March," Lloyd Price's "Stagger Lee," and Barbara Lynn's "You'll Lose a Good Thing." ~ Andy Kellman

Following his album-length collaboration with the more trad-minded British folk singer Sharron Kraus, on which Christian Kiefer's characteristic hushed bedroom-folk material seemed slightly out of place, Dogs & Donkeys is a far more solid and assured set. Indeed, second track "Pretty White Clouds" may well be Kiefer's best song yet, a piano-led ballad with close harmony vocals that sounds like a dream cross between the Jayhawks and Neutral Milk Hotel.
