This is the third and final volume compiling all of the material Freddie King (strangely spelled "Freddy" on all three discs) recorded for the King/Federal label. Very Best of Freddy King, Vol. 3 songs It picks up at a session on November 29, 1962, and continues until his last recordings for the imprint on September 14, 1966. Thank you Freddy, where ever you are!
This last copy out of the series of three is, just like the two other compilations, a standard for all those who are into great guitarplaying! Freddy (later to be named Freddie)really set the standard of playing the bluesguitar and his style has been copied many, many times.

Very Best of Freddy King, Vol. 3 songs The giant left-handed guitarist was no stranger to the recording studio by 1966, but Albert King had still to make his mark with the record-buying public. When he linked up with the cream of Stax's Memphis musicians, including Booker T. And The MGs and the Memphis Horns, that connection was made. "Laundromat Blues", "Oh, Pretty Woman" and "Crosscut Saw" set the scene for "Born Under A Bad Sign" and "The Hunter", which quickly found their way into the repertoires of Cream and Free. The convolutions of his guitar style were perfectly complemented by the trademark Stax funk rhythms. The team went on to make many more singles and albums, none of which could surpass the achievements of their first meeting. Recorded at Stax Recording Studio, Memphis, Tennessee between March 1966 and June 1967. The Memphis Horns: Wayne Jackson, Andrew Love (horns). Personnel: Albert King (vocals, guitar); Steve Cropper (guitar); Joe Arnold, Andrew Love, The Memphis Horns, Wayne Jackson (horns); Isaac Hayes, Booker T. Jones (piano); Al Jackson, Jr. (drums). Very Best of Freddy King, Vol. 3 buy CD music Produced in part by Mike Vernon, who worked on The Legendary Christine Perfect Album, this is an entertaining and concise package of ten songs performed by the late Freddie King and a slew of guests. Opening with Gonzalez Chandler's "Pack It Up," featuring the Gonzalez Horn Section, the youthful legend was only 40 years of age when he cut this career LP two years before his death. Though no songs went up the charts like his Top Five hit in 1961, "Hide Away," Burglar is one of those gems that journeymen can put together in their sleep. Tom Dowd produced "Sugar Sweet" at Criteria Studios in Miami, FL, featuring Jamie Oldaker on drums, Carl Radle on bass, and guitarists Eric Clapton and George Terry, which, of course, makes this album highly collectable in the Clapton circles. The sound doesn't deviate much from the rest of the disc's Mike Vernon production work; it is pure Freddy King, like on the final track, E. King's "Come On (Let the Good Times Roll)," where his guitar bursts through the horns and party atmosphere, creating a fusion of the pure blues found on "Sugar Sweet" and the rock that fans of Grand Funk grooved to when he opened for that group and was immortalized in their 1973 number one hit "We're an American Band" a year after this record's release. Sylistically, Freddie King is from the same school as Buddy Guy, two men instrumental in bringing this art form to a mass audience. King stretches those sounds with great fervor on the Hayes/Porter number "I Had a Dream," containing the strength Mark Farner said the blues artist displayed in concert, which could snap a guitar neck. The voice of Freddie King is what drives J.J. Cale's "I Got the Same Old Blues," the horns and the guitar battling between verses and uniting to ooze under the guitarist's vocal expression. Rhythm guitarist Bob Tench, producer Mike Vernon, bassist DeLisle Harper, drummer Steve Ferrone, and pianist Roy Davies all co-write "Texas Flyer" with Freddie King, a prime example of the modern blues this artist was developing. With Brian Auger and Pete Wingfield contributing to the title track, Jerry Ragovoy's "She's a Burglar," this project stands as a solid representation of an important musician which is as enjoyable as it is historic. ~ Joe Viglione All tracks have been digitally remastered. Recorded at the Chipping Norton Studios, Oxfordshire, England and Criteria Studios, Miami, Florida. Personnel includes: Freddie King (vocals, guitar); Chris Mercer, Mick Eves, Steve Gregory (tenor saxophone); Bud Beadle (baritone saxophone); Roy Davies (elctric piano, Clavinet); Brian Auger (organ); DeLisle Harper (bass); Steve Ferrone (drums); Pat Arnold, Misty Browning (background vocals). Engineers include: Barry Hammond, Tom Dowd, Steve Klein.

Very Best of Freddy King, Vol. 3 album for sale The phrase "very best of" in an album title usually indicates a highly selective collection of an artist's career highlights. By that standard, in one sense Collectables Records' The Very Best of Freddy King, Vol. 1 should be called something else; a more accurate description of the contents would be "The Complete Freddy King on Federal Records, Vol. 1." That's because this is the first of three discs that present every recording King made for the King Records subsidiary Federal in chronological order. This disc traces King's Federal stint from his first recording session on August 26, 1960, to the following July. But in another sense, The Very Best of Freddy King is an apt title. King enjoyed all of his singles chart success during 1961, scoring six entries on the R&B charts and five on the pop charts, and all of those tracks are included here, from "You've Got to Love Her With a Feeling" to "Christmas Tears." King's biggest hit was the instrumental "Hide Away," which hit the pop Top 40 and the R&B Top Five and gained even more recognition when it was remade by John Mayall and Eric Clapton on the Bluesbreakers album. Perhaps King's best-known song was the B-side of "You've Got to Love Her With a Feeling," "Have You Ever Loved a Woman," which Clapton remade on the celebrated Derek & the Dominos album Layla, and of course King's version is included here. Indeed, it is difficult at this juncture to listen to almost any King recording and not be reminded of his chief disciple, Clapton. But that only means this collection is an essential addition to the basic library of blues fans. ~ William Ruhlmann Liner Note Author: Victor Pearlin. Recording information: 08/1960-07/1961.

Very Best of Freddy King, Vol. 3 CD music Texas blues guitar wizard Freddie King was a major influence on Eric Clapton and many of the British blues-rockers--his sleek, stinging tone was like no other. He performs an eclectic array of cover versions on 1972's TEXAS CANNONBALL, including songs by Bill Withers, Isaac Hayes, Howlin' Wolf, and Leon Russell, and gets sturdy musical support from several musicians who also played with Clapton in the '70s. Recorded at Ardent Studios, Memphis, Tennessee on February 26-27, 1972 and Skyhill Studios, Los Angeles, California on February 2-4, 1972. Includes liner notes by Bill Dahl. Reissue producer: Tom Cartwright. Personnel: Freddie King (vocals, guitar); Don Preston (guitar); Leon Russell (piano); John Gallie (organ); Carl Radle, Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass); Chuck Blackwell, Jim Gordon, Al Jackson (drums). Very Best of Freddy King, Vol. 3 buy CD music The phrase "very best of" in an album title usually indicates a highly selective collection of an artist's career highlights. By that standard, Collectables Records' The Very Best of Freddy King, Vol. 2 should be called something else; a more accurate description of the contents would be "The Complete Freddy King on Federal Records, Vol. 2." That's because this is the second of three discs that present every recording King made for the King Records subsidiary Federal in chronological order. It picks up at the end of a July 25, 1961, session and continues through November 29, 1962. King enjoyed considerable chart success throughout 1961, but the hits stopped coming after that. This album finds him trying different approaches to meet the marketplace. "Sittin' on the Boondock," cut January 10, 1962, betrays the influence of Lee Dorsey's fall 1961 hit "Ya Ya"; there are four duets with Federal labelmate Lula Reed and even one song, "Your Love Keeps A-Working on Me," sung by Reed alone; and there are numbers with titles that use the words bossa nova and twist (and even one called "The Bossa Nova Watusi Twist") in an attempt to cash in on fads. It was all unavailing and, happily, on his November 1962 sessions King finally returned to more of a straight blues approach. Blues fans will respond most strongly to the final seven tracks on the album, which display his undiminished authority as a blues guitarist. While not nearly as impressive a set as the first volume in the series, this one still has enough good blues playing to make it worth adding to one's blues collection. ~ William Ruhlmann Liner Note Author: Victor Pearlin.

Very Best of Freddy King, Vol. 3 songs According to his biographer, Charles Sawyer, this is King's personal favorite among his recordings. Unlike most of his albums from this period (which are mostly collections of singles), this was recorded in one session and takes him out of his usual big-band setting, using only bass, drums, and piano for accompaniment. The result is a masterpiece: a sparse, uncluttered sound with nothing to mask King's beautiful guitar and voice. "You Done Lost Your Good Thing Now" (its unaccompanied guitar intro is a pure distillation of his style), "Mr. Pawn Broker," "Someday Baby" (R&B Top Ten, 1961), "Walkin' Dr. Bill," and a great version of "Drivin' Wheel" are highlights. (Out of print.) ~ George Bedard Remastered reissue of the blues legend's classic 1960 album includes eight bonus tracks, 'Sunny Road' (prev. unissued), 'Running Wild' (prev. unissued), 'Blues At Sunrise' (the first song King performed on the radio in 1948 - prev. unissued), 'Drifting Blues' (prev. unissued), 'Somebody Done Changed The Lock On My Door' (prev. unissued), 'Looking The World Over' (Undubbed Version), 'Walking Dr. Bill' (Overdub), & 'Hold That Train' (prev. unissued). Ace. 2003. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Includes liner notes by John Broven. Contains 18 tracks. Personnel includes: B.B. King (vocals); Lloyd Glenn (piano). Audio Mixer: Duncan Cowell. Liner Note Authors: Jon Broven; John Marlo. Recording information: Hollywood, CA. Photographer: Joseph Tauber.
