| | Town & Country C'Mon CD Town & Country Discography of CDs
In the cool and crowded world that scribes insist upon referring to as "post-rock," the tropes are so well established that, as in electronica, it's often difficult for an artist to make a truly individual impact. Not so with the drummerless, all-acoustic quartet Town and Country. In quiet, chamber-like settings, the band's instrumental compositions (and they ARE compositions, not just doodles over a two-chord progression) carefully intertwine the worlds of folk, classical music, and the avant garde. The cascading repetitions of an acoustic guitar pattern on "I'm Appealing" wouldn't sound out of place in a Steve Reich or Philip Glass composition, while at other moments, the cornet and bass clarinet interjections echo lost Morton Feldman pieces. At the same time, there's a rooted, earthy quality to much of C'MON, suggesting that fans of John Fahey might find a place for themselves here. Despite all the aforementioned touchstones, it's important to remember that Town and Country's sound and vision are very much their own, and all the more inviting for it.

C'Mon album
$11.99 The Cinderella-esque climb from lo-fi indie cult artist to Grammy nominee/major label darling must have been a perilous one for Smith, who makes the leap to the big time here after three well-regarded albums on small labels. He's lost none of his bite, though. The production values on XO may be slightly higher, but Smith's vision remains undiluted.
The production, centered around acoustic guitar augmented by keyboards and lush ...

$8.69 Recorded in Cassadaga, New York, New York between April 1997 and February 1999.
With their multi-disc opus ZAIREEKA (four CDs meant to be played simultaneously on four different players), the Flaming Lips radically expanded the scope of their melancholy psychedelia, as pop tunes became modernist soundscapes, part-Pink Floyd, part-John Cage. Obviously, the experience greatly influenced the band's direction, because on THE SOFT BULLETIN the Lips again scrap the guitar-bass-drum rock standard, sculpting instead ...
| | Town & Country 5 CD (2003)
C'Mon album
$13.05 On 5, Town & Country continues with its own beautiful style of acoustic minimalism. Bass clarinet, harmonium, viola, string bass, and cornet are the principle voices, but the way the sounds combine and evolve is the key here. In general, the pieces unfold very slowly, à la Morton Feldman, with an emphasis on the timbre of the instruments and their acoustic interplay. The players and the engineer paid extremely close attention to sonic detail, ...

C'Mon CD music
$13.05 OK, it's 1978, and you're in a rehearsal/recording studio in Berkeley, CA, playing with a semi-famous acid casualty who is working up demos for a new album. You've been learning a bunch of lean, hard-rockin' songs about two-headed dogs, zombies, and bloody hammers, and while the results are dynamic and powerful, it's become increasingly hard to shake the fact that your frontman is more than a little crazy. So when he calls out for the band to play "Teenager in Love," ...
