| | Global Underground: Locations CD
The 4th release in the Global Underground Sampler series brings together the highlights of all the big 2001 Global Underground & Nu Breed releases. Mixed expertly by The Forth once again, he has taken the great tracks from John Digweed 'Los Angeles', Darren Emerson 'Singapore', Deep Dish 'Moscow', Sander Kleinenberg & Lee Burridge Nu Breed albums and has given them that required re-airing. Global Underground.
Compiled and mixed by The Forth. Personnel: Mayte (vocals); Steve Smith (percussion). Audio Mixer: The Forth. Audio Remixers: 16B; Mazi. Recording information: Bens Kitchen; Creator Studios; Pink House Studios; Studio Nova. Constructing a mix album out of others' mix albums is a baffling proposition, but Global Underground: Locations does just that. Mixed by the series' own the Forth (previously responsible for Global Underground: Arrivals and Global Underground: Departures), this one also grabs tracks from past editions (devoted to Lee Burridge, John Digweed, Deep Dish, Darren Emerson) with no rhyme and no reason why these tracks couldn't have been taken from the original sources. At least the Forth steers away from high-gloss trance, instead sticking to '90s house. ~ John Bush

Kokomo was a 1970s funk/pop act who mined the same feel-good territory as bands like War and Rufus, and had a brief but dazzling presence on the British pub scene. This two-fer from Beat Goes On serves up digitally remastered versions of the band's first two albums which demonstrate their masterful chops and great rapport. BGO's 2007 two-fer combines Kokomo's first two albums -- their eponymous 1975 debut and its sequel, Rise and Shine! -- on a single disc, adding new liner notes from John Tobler. Kokomo were renowned as Britain's finest funk band of the mid-'70s, a genuine live experience, which makes their 1975 eponymous debut a bit of a shock: there's no live feel here, only slick studio gloss that brings the album closer to the sunbleached sounds of the American West Coast ...
