FURTHER DEFINITIONS is a serious contender for Benny Carter's most essential disc (though he churned out astounding amounts of high-quality work for more than 70 years). This 1961 album was a revisitation of a '37 session Carter cut with Coleman Hawkins, Django Reinhardt, and two European saxophonists. Hawkins brings his glorious tenor back for the '61 set, while guitarist John Collins fills Reinhardt's shoes. Charlie Rouse appears on tenor sax, with Phil Woods on alto, while the crack rhythm section of Dick Katz (piano), Jimmy Garrison (bass), and Jo Jones (drums) completes the personnel.
The set is, arguably, an improvement on the original, with its beautiful sound engineering, excellent arrangements (the four-horn line approximates a big band at times), and shining solo performances all around. "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Body and Soul" (on which Hawkins, of course, takes a magnificent, extended solo) are here, as are two fine Carter originals, the lush and lazy "Blue Star" and "Doozy," a sprightly bop number. The "Additions to FURTHER DEFINITIONS" section (tracks 9-16), a 1966 session with different personnel and a batch of Carter originals, is an excellent bonus. Carter's trademark attention to superior musicianship and quality characterize both of these highly recommended sessions.
Limited Edition Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve. 2006.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
Personnel includes: Benny Carter, Phil Woods, Bud Shank (alto saxophone); Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Rouse, Buddy Collette, Bill Perkins, Teddy Edwards (tenor saxophone); Bill Hood (baritone saxophone); Dick Katz, Don Abney (piano); John Collins, Bernard Kessel, Mundell Lowe (guitar); Jimmy Garrison, Ray Brown (bass); Jo Jones, Alvin Stoller (drums).

Further Definitions CD music
$10.19 Recorded between 1976 & 1998. Includes liner notes by Don Heckman.
Basically, this "greatest hits of all" is simply that: the highest-charting tracks in George Benson's long career -- highest-charting pop and adult contemporary tracks, that is. Benson had been on the scene over a decade before signing with Warner Bros., and many of his jukebox and R&B hits were recorded for Creed Taylor's CTI label. Some of Benson's recorded work that held those hits has been reissued in the past two years. Of the Warner material, they have gauged success ...
| | Madeleine Peyroux Careless Love CD (2004)
Further Definitions music CDs
$15.05 Madeleine Peyroux's unique blend of jazz and pop was first unveiled on 1996's DREAMLAND, where she sounded like a postmodern heir to the smoky-voiced tradition that ran down from Billie Holiday through the likes of Karen Dalton and Judy Roderick. Though Peyroux made a splash with her debut, she quickly dropped out of the music scene, not to appear again until eight years later with ...
| | Miles Davis Sketches Of Spain CD (1960) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Further Definitions songs
$6.75 The crown jewel of the epic Evans/Davis triptych that began with MILES AHEAD and PORGY AND BESS, SKETCHES OF SPAIN is as emotionally compelling as any performance in the trumpeter's remarkable body of works. Combining as it does the emotional gravity of two cultures--the deep song of flamenco music and the rich lament of the blues--SKETCHES OF SPAIN is a musical hybrid of enormous power and beauty. Gil Evans' immense canvas of orchestral colors inspires some of Davis' most deeply felt solo flights. He paints vast vistas of velvety, shimmering night sounds, and through it all runs the mountainous backbone of Spain's native rhythms and chants.
The centerpiece of SKETCHES OF SPAIN is the Evans/Davis treatment ...

| | Mauri Sanchis Less Is More CD (2003)
Further Definitions music CDs
$18.25 Mauri Sanchis is, no doubt, Spain's most relevant Organ Player and his prestige is reaching worldwide, being recognised by some of the world's most important Jazz Organists such as Dr. Lonnie Smith who already foresees for Mauri a place between the Hammond Masters. According to International Press, the release of 'Less is More' has brought a new and fresh alternative to traditional Jazz Organ Trio, through a modern and fresh approach to the Hammond in composition and accomplished playing. Such great welcome was not ignored by Hammond Europe who soon signed Mauri as the first Spanish Hammond Endorser ever. "Mauri has great promise to join the masters of the HammondB. His organ flows with soul and beauty. He will carry on the flavor of the organ masters"Dr. Lonnie Smith (Hammond B3 Legend)"Mauri Sanchis has a very unique and refreshing apporach to smooth jazz by using the Hammond organ! His great arrangements, original compositions and accomplished playing styles makes his music very hip!!!!!"Tony Monaco (Hammond B3 Master)"Mauri Sanchis creates musical moods and rhythmic grooves that both satisfy and delight the ear." Pete Fallico, USA. The Doodlin Lounge--------BIOMauri Sanchis is a self-taught artist, with very fine sensitivity who expresses himself with a special magic that joins melodies and personal experiences, inspiration and technique. His rhythm is warm and vivid without the rigidity of music studies, but with an instinct, touched by his intimate passion. His musical sounds get to the heart of the listener marrying humanity and art. The local press remarked from the very beginning, that Progressions is "a series of virtuosos considers the formidable Blues Band founded by him in 1992 almost impossible in the local scenario". These are his roots, passion and stimulus to move forward. In America, with its world and its musicians, becomes a unique experience in Mauri's progression. In California he continues his schooling and his achievements, joining the ranks of such musicians as MJC Jazz Band (Directed by Trumpeter, Dan Maas), Jay Wood & the Blues Commandoes or even the exigent Gary Hamilton, who said, "you ain't got to be black to play the Blues, Mauri is the proof". His character, his magic, his passion for the Hammond and the Blues took him to tour Spain for a year connecting his youth with the mastery of Graham Foster, who would add "Mauri Sanchis is a promising organist that, in these times where techno music is dominating, bets for a music full of soul and feeling with his Hammond B3 and his unlimited improving ...

Further Definitions album
$11.69 The second night of the 1989 reunion in New York of the 1961-1962 Jimmy Giuffre 3 with pianist Paul Bley and (now electric) bassist Steve Swallow in some ways eclipses the first. The fact that there is more integration between the trio members as a whole than on the first evening is certainly one place to start. At the very beginning, "Sensing" -- with Giuffre on soprano and Bley playing bass notes in the lowest register as Swallow enters and takes over the role and Bley moves to the middle -- is a stunner, though it is only four minutes and 13 seconds long. The breadth ...
