Across The Universe album
$13.85 ALL THINGS CENSORED VOL. 1 is a collection of Mumia Abu-Jamal's commentaries about racism, the death penalty, life on death row, the privations of the prison system and the corporate control of the media, among other issues. In addition to Mumia's socio-political commentary, there are segments from Alice Walker, Howard Zinn, Dorothy Allison, Cornel West, Ron Hampton, Joycelyn Elders, William Kunstler, Judi Barri, Assata Shakur and more.
In 1994, journalist and political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal was hired by National Public Radio's All Things Considered as a special commentator, only to be fired shortly before his series began due to political pressure from police groups and Republican Senator Bob Dole. This set from the ultra-leftist Alternative Tentacles label compiles these essays, recorded by Abu-Jamal in prison just before the state of Pennsylvania banned any journalists from visiting death row, essentially ending any recorded correspondence from the former Philadelphia journalist, convicted of murdering a police officer in 1982. Aided by vocal support from folks like Dr. Joycelyn Elders; Martin Sheen; famed attorney William Kunstler; authors Howard Zinn, Manning Marable, and Alice Walker; activist Cornel West; and MOVE survivor Romana Africa, Abu-Jamal focuses not so much on his own imprisonment but on the failure of the prison system ...
| | Blues Traveler Live From The Fall CDs (1996)
Across The Universe CD music
$20.25 Fittingly for a band inspired by the Grateful Dead, Blues Traveler has made its name on the live stage, where it plays with a chemistry that is the stuff of legend. LIVE FROM THE FALL, a 2-disc set, captures the improvisational magic the band weaves night after night.
On LIVE FROM THE FALL, Blues Traveler visits the hits from its four studio albums (including "Runaround"), throws in some favorite covers ("Imagine," "Low Rider") and stretches out on some monumental jams ("Mountain Cry," "Alone"). John Popper's harmonica playing makes ...

Across The Universe music CDs
$7.59 WHEN THE PAWN... was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album and "Paper Bag" was nominated for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Of the many women who came of age during the "Lilith Fair" age of the 90s, none was as intellectually precocious or as emotionally scarred as Fiona Apple. Her sophomore album, WHEN THE PAWN revealed Apple to be a fiercely independent artist who jealously guarded the sanctity of her creative expression. It bubbles over with confessionals pertaining to the effects that fame had on Apple's continuing string of disastrous relationships.
Rather than whine about her trials and tribulations, the lithesome 20-something matter-of-factly sings of yearning ("Paper Bag"), moving on from bad love ("The Way Things Are"), and staying wrapped up in it ("Limp"). As was the case on her debut, Apple's smoky delivery and understated piano playing make her the '90s equivalent of Nina Simone, another headstrong iconoclast. Producer Jon Brion does a great job incorporating a mix of swirling orchestration, lo-fi ambiance, and punch onto some of Apple's more notable numbers including the breathlessly fast-paced "Fast as You Can" and the defiantly resilient "Get Gone." Musically rich and lyrically challenging, WHEN THE PAWN is the kind of smart pop that is unfortunately more the rare exception rather than the common occurrence.

| | Robin Trower Seven Moons CD (2008) Digipak
Across The Universe CD music
$12.89 Jack Bruce must have enjoyed his 2005 get-together with Cream so much that, when Clapton and Baker were unwilling to continue the collaboration, he rang up Robin Trower to renew the brief power trio fling they had in the mid-'80s. The Trower-Bruce pairing had released only two albums, B.L.T. and Truce, and was dormant since 1982, so this 2007 reunion was somewhat of a continuation of the project, albeit one separated by a quarter century. The results impressively continue where Truce left off, as Bruce brings his distinctive croon/moan to bluesy, riff-oriented tunes dominated by Trower's silvery guitar runs. Gary Husband fills the drum slot adequately if inconspicuously, but his contributions are mixed so far under Bruce's vocals and Trower's guitar that they are secondary. The previous two releases called in Trower's old Procol Harum lyricist Keith Reid and Bruce collaborator Peter Brown to write the words, but Bruce and Trower pen these 11 songs without outside assistance. Most tunes such as "Lives of Clay," a barely concealed rewrite of Cream's "Politician" lick, revisit familiar territory, and clearly these guys are not out to expand any boundaries. Bruce, who has had serious medical ...

Review Quotes:Both traditional and trailblazing...Highly recommended.***Blues Review Magazine, Jan 2005In an age where clothes and plastic surgery appear to count more than musical ability, this record harks back to a time when it was all about the music. ***New York Blues and Jazz Society, by Roger Z, 2004Baum's playing has a deep funk to it, with a big influence of Jimmy Smith. And Baum also brings in all kinds of other things as well - dissonant jazz, alternative rock, R&B. He's not too ...

$11.49 As a new artist I hope to bring many emotions to the music, hopefully, through songs that offer hope.' Heather began her career in music at an early age, and for the past several years has been a demo singer, and local performer who has had the privilege of working with such greats as Johnny Gimble, Asleep at the Wheel, and Ray Price. Heather's high energy and exciting stage presence provide her audiences with an unforgettable experience. Her charisma and a vocal style that magically blends country and blues make Heather a dynamic performer. An aspiring songwriter, Heather co-wrote 'The Hero Next to Me, a testament to the inherent heroism of the common man. 'For the most part, I think of myself as always learning. I've been singing for years, but there is always a new experience around the corner in the music business. In recording Emerging in the Light there was such energy ...
