Fans of Zap Mama, Sade and/or Soul II Soul will probably flip for this sister duo from Bordeaux, France. Though they tend to get billed as a hip-hop act, their music is much more complex than that: it's smooth like Sade (but much more melodically interesting), bass-heavy like Soul II Soul (but much more lyrically interesting), and "Afropean" like Zap Mama (but much less interesting; sorry ladies). "Demain," the lead-off track on Princesses Nubiennes, is a smooth jazz groove that is more tasty than nourishing, but there's a fair amount of both textural and lyrical complexity to "Makeda." "Tabou" is actually an adapted (and, frankly, much improved) version of Sade's "Sweetest Taboo" that features some excellent French rapping. "Embrasse-Moi" is both excruciatingly sexy and highly rhythmically sophisticated. Sure, they have a mildly distressing tendency to layer everything with an ultra-smooth surface sheen, but it's forgivable; chances are good that they'll rough things up a bit as they mature. In the meantime, just give up and wallow in the succulent loveliness of tracks like "Demain" and "Les Portes du Souvenir." ~ Rick Anderson

| | Isaac Hayes Shaft (Deluxe Edition) CD (1971) Bonus Track; Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Princesses Nubiennes CD music
$9.75 Despite its codification into our collective pop culture consciousness, Isaac Hayes' "Theme From Shaft" is a highly original composition. It's been remade by Hayes himself for the remade Shaft film, and appropriately kicks off this collection of tunes from the movie by some of R&B's New Jacks.
A diverse selection of artists encompass the collection, from lascivious soul stirrer R. Kelly to the rugged Latin hip-hop of Fulanito, along with many other noteworthy diversions that represent the many flavors of contemporary urban soul. Most of the material focuses on John Shaft's street smarts and bravado, or the film's pimps, hoes, and gangsta imagery. As expected, Southern hip-hop is well represented, with Outkast, Mystikal, and Big Gipp from Goodie Mob contributing. The tracks offer typically gritty observations on street life, over bleak, minor chords and busy percussion. T.I.P. featuring Beanie Sigel offers "2 Glock 9's," one of the soundtrack's most rugged grooves, a minimal, stripped-down drum break that stutters and skids backwards and forwards over a Notorious BIG vocal sample and is easily the eeriest track on the album. The only light relief is provided by ...

| | String Quartet Tribute To Beyonce CD (2003)
Princesses Nubiennes album
$14.29 Vitamin's String Quartet Tribute series often tackles artists whose music seems relatively well-suited to being reimagined by a string quartet. The music of Beyoncé, more specifically songs from her debut solo disc, Dangerously in Love, doesn't fall into that category, but the record actually works on some level. Hearing strings sawing away at the naggingly catchy melody of "Crazy in Love" is fun and weird. The violin does a decent job playing the vocal line, even sounding soulful at times. The rest of the record stays pretty true to the original sound of Beyoncé's record but can't help but sound wacky. Take the martial beats on "Work It Out." (Which has way more than four instruments on it as do most of the tracks, making it more of a symphonic tribute to Beyoncé. Besides, if you read the credits, only one violin player is credited and it makes mention that the album's producer makes use of sample libraries. So it isn't even a quartet but rather one violinist and a guy working a computer.) And take the vaguely Arabic strings on "Naughty Girl" and also the cello thumping out dancehall ...
