Director Sam Raimi's first film has achieved legendary status since its 1982 release, and for good reason. Though perhaps not as widely seen as its two sequels, EVIL DEAD 2 and ARMY OF DARKNESS, THE EVIL DEAD is arguably the best of the three. It is the story of five college-age friends who travel to a cabin in rural Tennessee where the stumble upon the Book of the Dead, an ancient tome bound in human flesh and inked in blood. After unwittingly awakening the unspeakable terror told of in the book, each of the friends is transformed into the evil dead, one by one, except for Ash (Bruce Campbell). So, Ash is left with no other way to survive than to dismember the living corpses of his sister, girlfriend, and two of his friends. Shot on a shoestring budget, the film boasts some impressive camera work and extremely over-the-top gore effects as well as a sense of humor much more subtle than the tongue-in-cheek aesthetic of the two sequels.
Theatrical Release: October 15, 1981.
Director Sam Raimi's first feature film.
Joel Coen served as assistant editor.
Evil Dead Quotes/Excerpts:
"We can't bury Shelly, she's our friend."
(Ash, to Scott, after watching him hack off the limbs of his possessed girlfriend and then suggest that they bury the remaining parts)
Evil Dead Reviews:
"...Raimi maintains suspense and a nightmarish mood..."
-- Lor., Variety
"...[A] tongue-in-cheek cult favourite..."-- Ben Walters, Sight and Sound
"[H]ighly effective as a tense horror -- its scares balanced by plenty of tongue-in-cheek humour."
-- James Bell, Sight and Sound

Best Movie Ever In The Best Edition Ever! This DVD is unbelievable. Starting with the package: the book of the dead with its pages, just like in the film. After you watch the movie and you see you own the book itself, this edition becomes even more special to you. The extras couldn't be better, I think. Two doccumentaries (one about the movie, another one about fandom, made by main actor Bruce Campbell), two different comentaries, trailers, TV spots, photo gallery and everything you should expect from a great DVD edition. And a very important thing: the movie itself. This movie is, for me, the best movie ever made. It still has influences among many horror movies today, and it is, after many years of its release, highly popular. Many few movies made it happen, The Evil Dead is one of them. Not buying this edition should make you ashamed, even if you own another edition for the first movie, even if you don't really like horror. You just must buy this product. As I said, it's the best movie ever in the best DVD edition ever! Good luck, buy this now! Submitted by HoRRoR_MaNIaC (Brazil) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
Read This Before You Buy This is a horror classic. I especially enjoyed the innovative cinematography. The gory parts are done very well, especially considering that the movie is about 20 years old. The commentaries on this disc are funny and enlightening. My only problem with the movie is the scene at the beginning in which one of the female characters is visibly penetrated by a demon vine (Ugh!). For some reason that isn't mentioned in any of the reviews I've read, so I'm mentioning it now. If you can get past that, this is a must-see. I would suggest renting it before you buy it, though (because you're never going to see this one on TV). In closing, I feel compelled to warn those who have only seen either of the so-called sequels (Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness) that this is a serious horror flick and not a funny flick (as is evidenced by the scene I mentioned earlier); in fact this movie isn't even on the same storyline. That's about all I have to say. See it at least once before you die. Submitted by a reviewer (Russellville, AR) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
The dead has risen, and take note! By far the best of the ED series! Low budget, but don't let that fool you! The make up alone is fantastic. this is not another slasher movie, where u watch it and fall asleep. try watching this movie alone and in the dark. scary! this is by far the best movie besides Demon where a horror movie is actually scary. and the plant rape scene is a ingenius idea! have to watch to beleive! I seen this movie when it first came out and i was young, and it scared the living hell out of me! buy this movie!!!!! a must have for any horror fan! -jeff Submitted by a reviewer (maysville, KY USA) Was This Review Helpful? $7.39 Danny DeVito directs this black comedy about a long-married couple in the throes of divorce at the height of the materialistic 1980s, and his second feature far surpasses his first effort, THROW MOMMA FROM THE TRAIN, in style, substance, and comedic impact. Barbara and Oliver Rose were the perfect couple--he was a prominent Washington lawyer, she had a wildly successful catering business, they had a great house, great art, great cars and great kids. But when Barbara begins to wonder about life without Oliver, she likes what she sees and sues for divorce; unfortunately, neither of them likes the prospect of life without their opulent home, and war is waged to determine who will keep it. The pair become increasingly outlandish in their battle tactics, moving from cunning to cruel to outright surreal, and DeVito's camera echoes this mood with its unorthodox angles and movement. DeVito himself narrates the action as Oliver Rose's lawyer, and Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas prove once again their chemistry as a passionately antagonistic couple (ROMANCING THE STONE, JEWEL OF THE NILE).

$13.31 Bruce Robinson's semi-autobiographical account of his early years as an actor has become a cult hit of massive proportions, inspiring countless numbers of young men and women to quote stars Paul McGann and Richard E. Grant and their booze-soaked dialogue. The story follows these two unemployed actors in 1969 London, as they take a holiday in the country. Trapped inside a dank, empty cabin with each other, an endless downpour of heavy rain battering their roof, the two men
form a complicated bond fueled by booze, disaster, and nihilism. Though not much happens in terms of plot, WITHNAIL AND I is one of the most subtly hilarious films to come out of 1980's Britain.

$7.59 Residing within a wealthy, green, gated community in California, the Christiansens are not your usual nuclear family. Ben Christiansen (William R. Moses) and his wife Karen (Chelsea Field) have two daughters, an open marriage, and a handful of lovers apiece. When Karen announces that she wants a divorce, she winds up dead, and there are several suspects. Their fifteen year-old daughter, daddy's girl Ellie (Julia Stiles, SAVE THE LAST DANCE), never cared much for her mother, anyway. She quickly steps into her mothers role, cooking all the meals, wearing her mother's clothes, and sharing a bed with her father. Meanwhile, the murder investigation is gaining momentum. Karen had her share of enemies. Is Ellie too obvious a suspect? This extremely dark comedy, which was a hit a several festivals, combines elements of the best of Hitchcock with some heavy doses of Greek tragedy for a uniquely sinister stew with a strong bite!
Julia Stiles is an evil teenage girl who stops at nothing to get what she wants. Julia Stiles is Ellie, an average teenage girl with typical teenage problems: a bratty little sister, a nagging mother who's having an affair with the next door neighbor and a father that denies her the attention she so desperately craves. She doesn't find much to be happy about, at home or at school. But Ellie's not the kind of girl who gets mad. She's the kind of girl who gets evil.
$7.15 Director Tim Burton unleashes MARS ATTACKS!, a vicious, affectionate, brightly-colored homage to 1950s alien invasion movies. When a shiny silver flying saucer lands in the Nevada desert, a group of skull-faced Martians exit the gleaming craft. Although they claim to be peaceful, they promptly "vaporize" a gathering of unfortunate Earthlings, kicking off a bizarre high-tech war with wild special effects. This studiously campy sci-fi spoof, based on a series of Topps bubble-gum cards, gleefully parodies not only schlock B-horror movies, but also overblown blockbusters such as INDEPENDENCE DAY. This subversive film is helped along by an all-star cast including Jack Nicholson in dual roles as both a clueless U.S. President (with First Lady Glenn Close) and a Las Vegas sleazebag. The film follows the wacky WAR OF THE WORLDS-like proceedings from the points of view of numerous colorful characters, from the inane U.S. Press Secretary (Martin Short) to a trailer-park family (Lukas Haas and Sylvia Sidney), to singer Tom Jones (as himself).
Awake, Earthlings! It's later than you think. Don't miss this hilarious frenzy as Tim Burton directs - and Mars Attacks! See! Stars that shine across the galaxy. Jack Nicholson (in a dual role), Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito and a dozen more! Shriek! At mean, green invaders form the angry red planet! Armed with insta-fry ray guns, endowed with slimy, humongous brains - and enlivened with out-of-this-world but state-of-the-art special effects. Gasp! As the U.S. Legislature is overwhelmed. Thrill! As Earth fights back with an unexpected weapon. Take that, Martians!
$16.15 Picking up after the events of the hit pitch-black comedy series from Showtime, this feature-length movie is the event DEAD LIKE ME fans have been waiting for. But fear not, newbies--it also works as a stand-alone piece that should serve to properly introduce those unfamiliar with the show to its quirky style and topsy-turvy mythology. With the departure of Rube Sofer comes a new boss that Georgia and the rest of the grim-reaping team must get accustomed to. Meanwhile, everyone on the team begins breaking the steadfast rules of the profession, including Georgia, who reveals her supernatural identity to her still-living family. Directed by Stephen Herek (ROCK STAR, BILL AND TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE), the feature-length LIFE AFTER DEATH recaptures the magic that made the original series such a fan-favorite.
Based on the Showtime series, this DVD premiere follows the undead reapers adjusting to their new boss, whose agenda creates disorder among the group. Bonuses: commentary, featurette.

$9.09 In his previous effort, ABOUT A BOY, writer-director Paul Weitz managed to smoothly blend elements of dark comedy with heartwarming drama to deftly undercut both of the genre's undesirable excesses. IN GOOD COMPANY is Weitz's solo directorial debut sans his brother Chris, with whom he co-helmed the aforementioned BOY and the wildly successful AMERICAN PIE series. Here, he perfects his gift for the so-called "dramedy," softening the jagged, sometimes ugly edges of corporate satire with warmth and sentiment.
Dennis Quaid is perfectly cast as Dan Foreman, a slightly weary yet still dashing advertising boss and dedicated family man. He seems to have it all as a wholesome and admirable father, an existence which smacks of the archetypical mid-century sitcom dad that he so brilliantly portrayed as the secretly homosexual husband-father in Todd Haynes' FAR FROM HEAVEN. Enter Carter Duryea (THAT 70s SHOW's Topher Grace), a cocky young upstart hired to replace him. Before long, Dan is forced to be deferential to his new baby-faced boss, not only in the office but also at his own dinner table when Dan begins dating his lovely daughter Alex (Scarlett Johanssen). This old-fashioned, slightly soap-operatic twist is the perfect catalyst for the integration of humanity into an environment (and cinematic genre) that is so often devoid of it, and the film simultaneously lightens in spirit and deepens in emotion as a slow-yet-sure, father-and-son bond develops between the former adversaries.
