Director Sam Raimi's first film has achieved legendary status since its 1982 release, and for good reason. Though perhaps not as widely seen as its two sequels, EVIL DEAD 2 and ARMY OF DARKNESS, THE EVIL DEAD is arguably the best of the three. It is the story of five college-age friends who travel to a cabin in rural Tennessee where the stumble upon the Book of the Dead, an ancient tome bound in human flesh and inked in blood. After unwittingly awakening the unspeakable terror told of in the book, each of the friends is transformed into the evil dead, one by one, except for Ash (Bruce Campbell). So, Ash is left with no other way to survive than to dismember the living corpses of his sister, girlfriend, and two of his friends. Shot on a shoestring budget, the film boasts some impressive camera work and extremely over-the-top gore effects as well as a sense of humor much more subtle than the tongue-in-cheek aesthetic of the two sequels. Theatrical Release: October 15, 1981.
Director Sam Raimi's first feature film.
Joel Coen served as assistant editor. Evil Dead Quotes/Excerpts: "We can't bury Shelly, she's our friend."
(Ash, to Scott, after watching him hack off the limbs of his possessed girlfriend and then suggest that they bury the remaining parts) Evil Dead Reviews: "...Raimi maintains suspense and a nightmarish mood..."
-- Lor., Variety "...[A] tongue-in-cheek cult favourite..."-- Ben Walters, Sight and Sound "[H]ighly effective as a tense horror -- its scares balanced by plenty of tongue-in-cheek humour."

Best Movie Ever In The Best Edition Ever! This DVD is unbelievable. Starting with the package: the book of the dead with its pages, just like in the film. After you watch the movie and you see you own the book itself, this edition becomes even more special to you. The extras couldn't be better, I think. Two doccumentaries (one about the movie, another one about fandom, made by main actor Bruce Campbell), two different comentaries, trailers, TV spots, photo gallery and everything you should expect from a great DVD edition. And a very important thing: the movie itself. This movie is, for me, the best movie ever made. It still has influences among many horror movies today, and it is, after many years of its release, highly popular. Many few movies made it happen, The Evil Dead is one of them. Not buying this edition should make you ashamed, even if you own another edition for the first movie, even if you don't really like horror. You just must buy this product. As I said, it's the best movie ever in the best DVD edition ever! Good luck, buy this now! Submitted by HoRRoR_MaNIaC (Brazil) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Read This Before You Buy This is a horror classic. I especially enjoyed the innovative cinematography. The gory parts are done very well, especially considering that the movie is about 20 years old. The commentaries on this disc are funny and enlightening. My only problem with the movie is the scene at the beginning in which one of the female characters is visibly penetrated by a demon vine (Ugh!). For some reason that isn't mentioned in any of the reviews I've read, so I'm mentioning it now. If you can get past that, this is a must-see. I would suggest renting it before you buy it, though (because you're never going to see this one on TV). In closing, I feel compelled to warn those who have only seen either of the so-called sequels (Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness) that this is a serious horror flick and not a funny flick (as is evidenced by the scene I mentioned earlier); in fact this movie isn't even on the same storyline. That's about all I have to say. See it at least once before you die. Submitted by a reviewer (Russellville, AR) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The dead has risen, and take note! By far the best of the ED series! Low budget, but don't let that fool you! The make up alone is fantastic. this is not another slasher movie, where u watch it and fall asleep. try watching this movie alone and in the dark. scary! this is by far the best movie besides Demon where a horror movie is actually scary. and the plant rape scene is a ingenius idea! have to watch to beleive! I seen this movie when it first came out and i was young, and it scared the living hell out of me! buy this movie!!!!! a must have for any horror fan! -jeff Submitted by a reviewer (maysville, KY USA) Was This Review Helpful? $9.69 BRAZIL is Terry Gilliam's masterpiece. Cowritten by Gilliam, playwright Tom Stoppard, and Charles McKeown, the cult-favorite film is set in a futuristic society laden with red tape and bureaucracy. When a bug (literally) gets in the system, an innocent man is killed, leading mild-mannered Sam Lowry (an excellent Jonathan Pryce) to reexamine what he wants out of life. He decides to fight the totalitarian system in his search for freedom--and the woman he loves. The terrific, offbeat cast features Robert De Niro as a renegade heating engineer; Katherine Helmond as Sam's ever-younger mother; Michael Palin as a government-sanctioned torturer with a distaste for upsetting the status quo; Bob Hoskins as a vengeful Central Services employee; Jim Broadbent as a wacko plastic surgeon; the wonderful Ian Holm as Sam's nerve-ridden, pitiful boss, afraid of his own signature; and Kim Greist as the rebel Sam falls for.
The look of BRAZIL is relentless, ...

Evil Dead movie DVD
$10.29 Billy Bob Thornton is terrific as Willie T. Stokes, a lowlife department-store Santa in Terry Zwigoff's outrageous comedic follow-up to his offbeat hit GHOST WORLD. Every year, Stokes takes a job as Santa in a different place in order to rob the store he's working in. The diminutive Tony Cox plays his horny sidekick, Marcus, the real mastermind, who is even more foulmouthed than Stokes. Brett Kelly is Thurman Merman, an eight-year-old who desperately needs to believe in the real Santa Claus--and just might have a good enough heart to change Stokes's evil ways. Or maybe not. And Lauren Graham plays Sue, a young sexpot who wants to get a different kind of gift from Santa. Providing excellent comic relief in this black comedy is John Ritter, in his last film role, as the mousy mall manager, and Bernie Mac as Gin, the mall security guard who suspects something is not right. Be warned--BAD SANTA is not a family holiday movie. It is lewd, crude, and very funny, but it is most definitely not for children. Joel and Ethan Coen, the brothers behind such quirky ...

Evil Dead video
$7.95 In the same vein as EDWARD SCISSORHANDS and NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, Tim Burton continues to combine wholesome comedy and creepy horror with this tale of a mild-mannered Victorian gentleman, Victor (Johnny Depp), who accidentally marries a mysterious corpse bride (Helena Bonham-Carter) instead of his intended, Victoria (Emily Watson). Victor soon discovers that the Land of the Dead holds more fun than frights and begins to fall in love with his innocent bride. Meanwhile, Victoria has been drawn into a scam of a marriage and may not escape with her life. As time runs out for everyone, can there be a resolution in which everyone gets what he or she deserves?
Building on their past productive relationship (EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, ED WOOD), Tim Burton and Johnny Depp create a colorful riot of a film that revives the increasingly rare method of stop-motion animation. Over the period of 10 years that Burton worked to complete the film, new techniques were created to speed the process, including a new way to change the character models' facial expressions by using gears in their heads. Of particular note is the lilting score by Danny Elfman, another longtime Burton collaborator. Fun for adults and children, CORPSE BRIDE is another welcome walk through Tim Burton's twisted mind.
Set in a 19th century European village, this stop-motion, animated feature follows the story of Victor (voiced by JOHNNY DEPP), a young man who is whisked away ...

Evil Dead film
$11.35 Australian comedian Eric Bana is Mark "Chopper" Read, a legendary criminal who wrote his best-selling autobiography, FROM THE INSIDE, while serving a murder sentence in prison. Beginning in the blue-washed light of a maximum security Melbourne prison, Chopper establishes his dominance with the impulsive knifing of a fellow prisoner. Vaccillating between violence and regret, Chopper apologizes to his victim, but his good mate Jimmy (Simon Lyndon) later retaliates against Chopper in an excruciating contract stabbing, rife with sexual tension. Finally released from prison, the heavily-tattooed Chopper has lost the better part of both of his ears, as well as the ability to make any distinction between his own made-up stories and reality. At a nightclub with his prostitute girlfriend, Tanya (Kate Beahan), he runs into Neville (Vince Colosimo), an old victim who limps from the attack but glitters in drug-funded gold. In his paranoia, Chopper connects rumors of a new contract on his life to Neville, Tanya, and his old mate Jimmy, to whom he pays a visit and discovers a man rotting from drug abuse. Alternately wickedly funny and grotesque, CHOPPER gives no easy answer to the question of Chopper Read's motives, but his method is clear, "Ya bash people for no reason, just to get a name for yourself."
Chopper (Eric Bana) is Mark "Chopper" Read, real-life convict and bestselling author of "How ...

$6.90 In his previous effort, ABOUT A BOY, writer-director Paul Weitz managed to smoothly blend elements of dark comedy with heartwarming drama to deftly undercut both of the genre's undesirable excesses. IN GOOD COMPANY is Weitz's solo directorial debut sans his brother Chris, with whom he co-helmed the aforementioned BOY and the wildly successful AMERICAN PIE series. Here, he perfects his gift for the so-called "dramedy," softening the jagged, sometimes ugly edges of corporate satire with warmth and sentiment.
Dennis Quaid is perfectly cast as Dan Foreman, a slightly weary yet still dashing advertising boss and dedicated family man. He seems to have it all as a wholesome and admirable father, an existence which smacks of the archetypical mid-century sitcom dad that he so brilliantly portrayed as the secretly homosexual husband-father in Todd Haynes' FAR FROM HEAVEN. Enter Carter Duryea (THAT 70s SHOW's Topher Grace), a cocky young upstart hired to replace him. Before long, Dan is forced to be deferential to his new baby-faced boss, not only in the office but also at his own dinner table ...
