Hindu devotional music has traveled a long way since the late '60s, when young American converts often tried to be more authentically Indian than the source material they drew upon. Like Krishna Das, Jai Uttal comfortably straddles two worlds, as content to play elaborately arranged rock songs as simple Indian folk or religious tunes.
On his sparkling 2002 release, the playfully-titled MONDO RAMA, Uttal mixes it up. "Narayana" opens the album with an impassioned plea to God. On "Shri Krishna," Uttal layers jazz horns over turntable screeches before segueing into a Beatles cover, "Tomorrow Never Knows." One of the standout tracks from the album is the entirely un-Hindu "Shalom," suggesting that Uttal's spiritual quest recognizes no earthly borders.
MONDO RAMA was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best New Age Album.

NAPRA Review (05-06/02, p.76) - "...Uttal takes the traditional classical music of India....and fuses it with Kirtan, folk styles of India, and contemporary Western elements....Each song is ripe with passionate longing to meet the divine in all its many forms..." | | Jai Uttal Shiva Station CD (1997)
Mondo Rama songs
$18.99 Westerners like Jai Uttal and Krishna Das have become enormously popular by writing non-traditional music to accompany incantations to Shiva, Ram, Radha and a whole stable of deities. But where Das makes simple, heartfelt music to sing along to, Uttal aims for sophisticated ethnic fusions that are as appropriate for the dance floor as for a kirtan gathering. Uttal was already prominent in the field of world music when the 1997 release of SHIVA STATION brought him a large mainstream audience, bolstered by the growing popularity of yoga and chant.
Aided by producer and musical adventurer Bill Laswell, Uttal freely mixes classical Indian melodies with elements of funk, trance, dub, and an intoxicating feeling of controlled chaos. The passionate vocals sound largely improvised, enhanced by supportive backing from the Pagan Love Orchestra and samples of wandering street musicians of Bengal (to whom Uttal paid homage on his 1994 release BEGGARS AND SAINTS). A lush blend of instruments includes banjo, sitar, ...

$7.99 Needle is the collaboration of Julie Cornett and Steve Beck. Their debut CD, Songs Your Mother Never Sang You, blends Steve’s low-fi minimalist arrangements with Julie’s collection of lullabies and symphonic sagas. Occasionally Christine Banks would stop by and add a touch of spice with her violin.Recently featured on NPR, Needle strives for honesty in its music, keeping where possible early takes marked by inspiration. | | Libero Vox Soul Conviction CD (2006) (Import)
Mondo Rama CD music
$18.55 Libero Vox is the musical project of Luke Golledge, and his determination to maintain his creative independence lead him to name the band after a Latin expression meaning free or liberated voice. The debut album of Libero Vox, the self-released Soul Conviction, is a confluence of styles and sounds ... his poetic lyrics and talented instrumentation make this a solid debut. The songs were written and conceived independently of one another, and the result is an album with a wide variety of styles. Pop, folk, punk and soul all make an appearance, although there are similar lyrical themes throughout as Golledge bares his soul for all to see.Life’s Simple Pleasures open the album, and it’s a good introduction to Libero Vox. It’s a simple pop folk song about appreciating the simple things in life, and a good sign of what’s to come. Comme Ci Comme Ca plays some acoustic flamenco against some heavier power riffs ...
