Let's Start A War album
$17.39 A truly neglected classic, 999's eponymous debut album was issued in March, 1978, on the back of three stunning 45s -- the romping "I'm Alive," the anthemic "Nasty Nasty," and the oddly ambitious "Me and My Desire." The first and last of these appeared on the album, together with the summer smash that never was, June, 1978's, "Emergency," and ...

| | Them Crooked Vultures CD (2009)
Let's Start A War music CDs
$11.19 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old studio pro who gravitated toward provocative partners after Led Zeppelin's demise, teaming up with R.E.M. as easily as he did with avant-queen Diamanda Galas and nu-folkster Sara Watkins; Dave Grohl, who hopped into an empty drummer's chair whenever the opportunity presented itself; and Josh Homme, who set up a mini-empire based entirely on jam sessions. If Them Crooked Vultures brings to mind Homme's projects more than Grohl's or Jones', it's largely due to his role as lead vocalist and how guitar can push a rhythm section as powerful as this to the side, dominating with its grinding riffs and solos. Homme's predilection for precision does reign supreme -- when the group stretches out, even wallowing in the murk on "Interlude with Ludes," there's the sense that, like a great improv troupe, the trio freaked out then retained ...
| | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
Let's Start A War songs
$11.99 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. THE LIST is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as much as it belongs to her, a beautiful restatement of her father's passions, only now, they've become his daughter's treasures, as well. It's an affirming story, but that's all it would be if Cash didn't sing ...

| | Billy Joel Greatest Hits Vols. 1 & 2 CDs (1985) Remastered; Enhanced CD
Let's Start A War music CDs
$25.75 Billy Joel, a classically-trained pianist, was signed to Columbia Records in 1973. The title track to Piano Man, became a US Top 30 single and sowed the seeds of a highly successful recording career. However, Joel refused to bow to corporate demands for commercially-minded material and despite enjoying hits with two subsequent albums, Street Life Serenade and Turnstiles, it was not until 1977 that his fortunes flourished with the release of The Stranger, which eventually surpassed Bridge Over Troubled Water as Columbia's best-selling album. Joel's 1979 album, 52nd Street, spawned another smash single, 'My Life' while the singer's first US number 1, 'It's Still Rock 'N' Roll To Me' came from a subsequent release, Glass Houses. His image as a popular, uncontroversial figure was shaken with The Nylon Curtain, which featured two notable 'protest' compositions, 'Allentown' and 'Goodnight ...

| | Quitter CD (2002)
Let's Start A War CD music
$9.55 The impressive '70s rock sound of Quitter is showcased wonderfully on their eponymous debut album. Taking influence from Black Sabbath, they don't plod away at needless riffs the way that many Sabbath-influenced groups do. Instead they take the general feel and swagger of the group (think Sabotage-era) and update it with a healthy injection of '90s angst. This is no Alice in Chains, though, more like Corrosion of Conformity if they drank more industrial-strength cough syrup. Guitarist Ian Ross might be the strongest force here; his thick sound and solid riffing keeps this from moving too far into Nickelback territory. Tracks like "Tear You Down" are showcases for how much he can improve their weaker material, while a song like "Mobity Mosely" proves how incredible he can sound with a strong song backing him. Singer Hari Hassin has a clear, crisp voice that matches ...
| | Jazz In Paris: Jazz & Cinema, Vol. 3 CD (2002) Import
Let's Start A War music CDs
$10.49 Digitally remastered using 24 bit technology. Presented in digipak form and includes brand new liner notes.
The Jazz in Paris: Jazz and Cinema series of Verve CD reissues examines jazz recorded for French film soundtracks in the late '50s and early '60s. This third compilation is the least successful of the first three, as few of the tracks stand on their own merit away from the movies they accompanied. Written for the film Les Loups Dans la Bergerie, the compositions of Serge Gainsbourg might be labeled cool, though they are rarely given time to develop and feature no major soloists in Alan Gouraguer's arrangements. ...
| | Synergy Reconstructed Artifacts CD (2003)
Let's Start A War songs
$18.59 Reconstructed Artifacts is a new album of old tunes, freshly re-recorded pieces from Synergy's back catalog. The idea is somewhat strange; after all, Larry Fast has been an important name in analog electronic music, his Synergy project one of the rare non-German acts to leave a mark on the '70s. So why go back and digitally re-record what was the pride of analog synth fans? As questionable as the decision may be, the results are convincing, at least in part. Early pieces like "Relay Breakdown" and "Warriors" (from Electronic Realizations for Rock Orchestra, 1975) or "S-scape" (from Sequencer, 1976) sound clearer, better defined, and have more punch -- more so if you compare them to the cheap LP pressings. But again, wouldn't a remix and a remaster be enough, especially since Fast is very careful here to reconstruct the pieces down to every little detail? ...
