Niacin: John Novello (piano, Hammond B-3 organ, synthesizer); Billy Sheehan (bass); Dennis Chambers (drums). Engineers include: John Novello, Dino Herrmann, Erik Zobler. Recorded at Luntek Music Studios and Clear Lake Audio, Los Angeles, California. Personnel: John Novello (piano, synthesizer); Dennis Chambers (drums). Photographer: Chaz Bowie. Arranger: John Novello. With their fifth recording, this 2001 release provides undeniable proof that the hard-driving power organ trio known as Niacin has achieved an artistic milestone. On this outing, Hammond B3 organist John Novello maneuvers his powerful and altogether fluid rhythm section through a series of memorable tunes also featuring a dynamic and unabashed rendition of the legendary King Crimson piece, Red. The trio also renders a blitzing, hard rock cover of keyboardist Jan Hammer's "Blue Wind." However, the musicians' unified approach, consisting of tightly woven fabrics of sound and multicolored themes, bears the mark of a unit who has perhaps reached the pinnacle of group-based success. Strong soloing abounds atop funk/fusion and first-call session ace drummer Dennis Chamber's heavy-handed, polyrhythmic attack. Whereas, the artists also jazz up the proceedings via tightly coordinated unison statements and melodious choruses amid a bevy of twists, turns, peaks, and valleys. Here, progressive rock receives a college education. Recommended. ~ Glenn Astarita

JazzTimes (5/02, p.160) - "...Whips up raw fusion fury like some interesting amalgam of Brian Auger and the Trinity, Tony Williams Lifetime, Yes and Emerson, Lake & Palmer..." Time Crunch Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) A jewel Billy Shehhan, John Novello and Dennis Chambers give us a music jewell with Time Crunch. Eleven songs: nine compositions by Sheehan/Novello and excellent versions of Red (King Crimson) and Blue Wind (Jan Hammer). Billy Sheehan is one of the best bass player in rock music and with Niacin he show us that in fussion is one of the best too. Joh Novello is a virtuoso´s hammond player and Dennis Chambers is and excellent drummer. Close your eyes and expand your mind to hear this record. In some themes you hear something like guitar and is only John Novello playin synthesizers. Submitted by wjoalh15 (Mérida, Venezuela) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Crunch Time Repeated listens have failed to convince me that "Time Crunch" is a step in the right direction from the excellent "Deep" CD. Sure, the standard of musicianship from Messrs's Sheehan, Novello and Chambers is phenomenal but, the tunes aren't immediately accessible this time around. "Red", the King Crimson classic, whilst interesting lacks the punch and urgency of the original. "Blue Wind" sounds rather like an out take that could (and maybe should) have stayed in the can. The original material has its moments but like I said, it is not a progression from their previous offering. Come on guys...you promised so much but have failed to deliver with "Time Crunch". $20.35 The companion album to the CHEETAH GIRLS TV movie sequel, this Disney collection offers up a set of R&B and pop tunes by both the entire group (the confident "Strut," the melancholy "It's Over") and Raven Symone solo (the dancehall-inflected "Do Your Own Thing," the uplifting "Everyone's a Star"). The disc also includes contributions by Spanish newcomer Belinda, who brings a slightly edgier approach to tracks such as the lively "Dance with Me" (featuring Andrew Seeley) and the rock-tinged "Why Wait." Two years after the original Cheetah Girls movie, Galleria, Chanel, Aquanette, and Dorinda return with The Cheetah Girls 2, a sequel and a full-length soundtrack.
