Like Roy Ayers, Patrice Rushen, George Benson, and George Duke, Tom Browne is a perfect example of a jazz musician who switched to R&B and was lambasted by jazz snobs for it. As jazz's hardcore saw it, the trumpeter was a sellout -- a gifted Clifford Brown disciple who was shamelessly wasting his chops playing commercial music. But commercial music isn't necessarily inferior to jazz, and the fact is that much of Browne's soul/funk output was excellent. While jazz snobs dismissed Browne's third album, Magic, because it contains very little jazz, the Dave Grusin/Larry Rosen-produced LP has a lot going for it from a soul/funk standpoint. The only cuts on Magic that have anything to do with jazz are the sensuous quiet storm instrumental "Night Wind" and a lush Grusin arrangement of Billie Holiday's "God Bless the Child." This is an R&B album first and foremost, and those who admired Browne for his 1980 hit "Funkin' for Jamaica" also admired such Magic cuts as the funky "Let's Dance," the Earth, Wind & Fire-ish "I Know," and the addictive funk hit "Thighs High (Grip Your Hips and Move)," all of which feature vocalist Toni Smith -- a passionate, Chaka Khan-influenced belter who had been featured on "Funkin' for Jamaica." While jazz snobs would be better off passing on Magic, R&B fans will find a lot to admire about Browne's third album. ~ Alex Henderson

| | Very Best Of Tower Of Power: The Warner Years CD (2001)
Magic music CDs
$8.89 Recorded between 1972 & 1975. Includes liner notes by Kevin Phinney.
Digitally remastered by Bill Inglott & Dan Hersch (DigiPrep).
Usually, it's not a good sign if a band is generally known for augmenting artists instead of their own records, but Tower of Power was really a very good horn section, and they did make records that held their own. Of course, "What Is Hip?" was the biggest single they ever had, but they also had several other smaller hits that captured their sleek, stylized soul-funk quite well, such as "Soul Vaccination." Pretty much all of those songs are captured on Rhino's 2001 anthology The Very Best of Tower of Power: The Warner Years, which spans 16 tracks and contains almost all the highlights of their '70s records. Yes, the 1999 double-disc set What Is Hip? is more comprehensive, but that's really for serious listeners. For listeners that want a lean dose of the TOP's prime, this is the best ...
| | Tom Browne Love Approach CD (1979) Japan; 24 Bit Remastered
Magic songs
$29.09 LOVE APPROACH presents trumpeter Tom Browne performing "She Has a Silent Smile," "Moon Rise," and more.
When trumpeter Tom Browne hit the Billboard charts in 1980, one would have thought that he was an overnight sensation. However, the licensed pilot had several years under his belt working with Weldon Irvine, Sonny Fortune, and others. His debut smash single, "Funkin' for Jamaica (N.Y.)," took the music industry by storm. Between Browne's piercing horn intro and his chilling riffs in the vamp, the New York native and his cohorts lay down one jammin' groove. From the thunderous bass of Marcus Miller and Browne's trumpeting trips to the salacious vocals of Toni Smith and the colorful conversation referencing Browne, this ...
| | Norman Brown West Coast Coolin' CD (2004)
Magic album
$8.39 As one of the six-string lite-jazz inheritors of the Wes Montgomery guitar-jazz mantle, Norman Brown continues to bridge the worlds of musical improvisation and contemporary R&B via the crisp WEST COAST COOLIN'. In following up the success of 2002's JUST CHILLIN', the Louisiana native continues to infuse more soul nuances into his music by recruiting producers James Poyser and Vikter Dupliax, better known for working with neo-soul stalwarts Jill Scott, D'Angelo, and Erykah Badu. The result is an airy yet intricate romp that finds Brown not only serving up a percolating reading of the Marvin Gaye classic "What's Going On," but doing equally well with the far funkier opener, "I Might," with its slightly hip-hop-flavored beats and shuffling cadence.
The remaining eight tracks don't disappoint, as the guitarist keeps up a crackling pace. The snappy "Up 'N' at 'Em" finds Brown tossing ...
| | Brian Culbertson It's On Tonight CD (2005)
Magic CD music
$11.99 With its seething, laid-back funk beats and steamy lyrics full of obvious references to romantic trysts, it doesn't get any sexier than Brian Culbertson's IT'S ON TONIGHT. A number of prominent crossover jazz artist lend their talents here. For example, the downtempo title track features a sensual R&B vocal from singer Will Downing. Later, saxophonist Boney James' mellifluous lines become the focus of "The Way You Feel." On "Secret Affair," relative newcomer Chris Botti plays Miles Davis-influenced riffs over a spacious one-chord vamp (and his use of a Harmon mute creates that smoky, late-night effect).
Kirk Whalum's silky tenor saxophone beautifully complements Patti Austin's soulful voice on "Love Will Never Let You Down," a seductive ...
| | Hall & Oates Atlantic Collection CD (1996)
Magic music CDs
$11.45 THE ATLANTIC COLLECTION is a compilation of Hall & Oats' previously issued songs including singles and rarities from three Atlantic albums: WHOLE OATES (1972), ABANDONED LUNCHEONETTE (1973) and WAR BABIES (1974).
This anthology of Hall and Oates' early work--tracks taken from their first three albums, along with two new tracks done for an earlier greatest hits package, plus a previously unreleased track ("Past Times Behind") from their debut--is a schizophrenic affair, ranging all over the stylistic map. The earliest tracks have a James Taylor sort of singer/songwriter feel, with the occasional exception of songs, like "Sara Smiles," which showcase the duo's Philly-soul roots.
The later Todd Rundgren-produced tracks, however, are pop/rock concoctions very much in the high-tech mold of their producer. The real anomaly, however, is "Past Times Behind," which is straightforward country-rock that could pass for Poco Lite.
Before Daryl Hall and John Oates hit paydirt with a long string of hits that began with 1975's 'Sara Smile', they were releasing critically acclaimed albums on the Atlantic label. Their songwriting chops were already in place, but their audience had not found them yet. Obviously, things would change in a few short years... This collection features tracks from those three albums (Whole Oates, Abandoned Luncheonette and War Babies) including their first hit 'She's Gone' plus 'Lady Rain', 'Lilly (Are You Happy)', 'It's Uncanny', '70's Scenario', 'When The Morning Comes' and more. Rhino.
This is part of the Atlantic & Atco Remasters Series.
Recorded at Atlantic Recording Studios and Secret Sound, New York, New York between 1972 and 1974. Includes liner notes by Barry Alfonso.
Personnel: Daryl Hall (vocals, mandolin, piano, electric piano, keyboards); John Oates (vocals, acoustic guitar, guitar); Chris ...
