The third release in Jade Tree's split series pairs for the first time two exemplary storytellers, My Morning Jacket from Kentucky, and Songs: Ohia from Chicago. 4 tracks rfom My Morning Jacket, 'O Is The One That Is Real', 'How Do You Know', 'Come Closer' & 'The Year In Review' & 1 track from Songs: Ohia, 'Translation'.
Recording information: Above The Cadillac Studios, Shelbyville, KY. Unknown Contributor Roles: KC Guetig; Danny Cash; Johnny Quaid; Jim James; Two-Tone Tommy. On a split release with Songs: Ohia, Louisville's My Morning Jacket put their best foot forward. With My Morning Jacket providing four of the disc's five songs, Jimi James' echoing and emotive voice takes control immediately, first on the steady and fiery "O Is the One That Is Real." They slow down the pace on "How Do You Know," with James' high-pitched croon again taking charge of the song's reins. The airy sound on "Come Closer" is followed by "The Year in Review," which consists entirely of the first three songs on fast-forward speed. Songs: Ohia's Jason Molina chimes in with the disc's last cut, "Translation," which clocks in at over ten minutes. Molina croons over a subdued arrangement. Will Oldham provides some distant, echoing backing vocals to the haunting and startling track. Both bands have a bluesy/folky feel to their sound. While this disc doesn't show either at their best, it does serve as an adequate introduction to each band. The disc was the third of Jade Tree Records' split-release series. It was released in early 2002. ~ Stephen Cramer

$11.65 Additional Tracks
My Morning Jacket includes: Jim James (vocals, guitar). Contains 14 tracks. On their second album for Darla Records, My Morning Jacket sound perfect. That is to say, they haven't changed a bit, and we like them that way. At Dawn is full of the same strumming acoustic guitar, hauntingly treated vocals, elements of country and blues, and everything else that made The Tennessee Fire a magnificent country, rock, and Americana stew. When bandleader ...

$10.65 My Morning Jacket: Jim James (vocals, guitar); Carl Broemel (guitar); Bo Koster (keyboards); Two-Tone Tommy (bass guitar). Drawing from the band's early 7"s, unreleased material, and compilation appearances, My Morning Jacket's two reissues from Darla show that the band already had a large back catalog before its first full-length. And with 28 tracks between the two "chapters," this is a wonderful gift to the fans and shows a more ...

| | 10,000 Maniacs Our Time In Eden CD (1992)
Split
$6.19 10,000 Maniacs: Natalie Merchant (vocals, piano); Rob Buck (guitar, sitar, banjo, mandocello); Dennis Drew (accordion, piano, organ, keyboards); Steve Gustafson (bass); Jerome Augustyniak (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Mary Ramsey (violin, viola); Bruce Dukov, Ralph Morrison (violin); Pamela Goldsmith (viola); Larry Corbett (cello); Kim Laskowski, Atsuko Sato (bassoon); Charles Fleischer (harmonica); Maceo Parker (alto saxophone); Alfred "Pee Wee" Ellis (tenor saxophone); Fred Wesley (trombone); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion). Recorded at Bearsville Studios, Bearsville, New York. Pushing through the sophomore jinx that gave Blind Man's Zoo its preachy feel, 10,000 Maniacs offer up a baker's dozen of wonderful folk-pop songs with hard-hitting messages, nearly matching the brilliance of their debut. Natalie Merchant is a few years older here, a few tribulations wiser, and a few shakes looser, although that's not to say she doesn't have a point (or 13) to make. Whether with old-school R&B horns ablaze or the simple elegance of a piano and strings, she glorifies, condemns, and cherishes the world she witnesses, not excusing herself or anyone else from the part they play. The rest of the band, Rob Buck, Dennis Drew, Steve Gustafson, and Jerome Augustyniak, gives her the superb musical roots and wings from which to grow and soar. The subject matter of the songs is sometimes subtle, sometimes overt, ...
