THE GREAT ANNIHILATOR is often hailed by critics and audiences alike as Swans' most palatable and accessible album. On this release, multi-instrumentalist Michael Gira foregoes his more experimental and industrial tendencies in favor of easily digestible soundscapes and tracks that are, at times, downright catchy. Songs such as "Mind/Body/Light/Sound" even tread into dance territory. "My Buried Child" and "Warm" showcase the breathy female vocals of Gira's partner and collaborator, Jarboe, who nicely complements his deeply brooding, almost demonic drawl. Also of note here is Gira's assemblage of a strong crew of instrumentalists--including frequent collaborator Norman Westberg on guitar, Algis Kizys on bass, Clinton Steele on guitar, and Ted Parsons on drums.
Swans includes: M. Gira, Jarboe (vocals).
Rolling Stone (10/5/95, p.69) - 3 Stars - Good - "...The music has opened up a great deal. Acoustic guitar and nearly New Age electronic pastels are as likely to be part of the mix as the band's signature metallic harshness..." Alternative Press (5/95, pp.80-82) - "...Swans are a call to glorious nullification that resounds in attempts to escape corporal existence and despair. It's a space that is either foreboding, all too real, or soothing...but no matter how you get there, THE GREAT ANNIHILATOR is intense, exhilarating, and believe it--very beautiful..." Option (5-6/95, p.136) - "...this music is both grandiose and meticulously detailed; rather than pop's recklessly forward momentum and instant gratification..." NME (Magazine) (1/28/95, p.48) - 6 - Good - "...A soundtrack of serial killer ballads and Faustian pacts....The lyrics veer from hysteria to hysterical...add the music...and, as with fellow nightcrawler Nick Cave, it all clicks into place..." | | Angels Of Light New Mother CD (1999)
Great Annihilator CD music
$13.09 Starting with a gentle keyboard in "Fragment," which seamlessly moves into "Praise Your Name" with its piano, accordion, brushed drums, and folk/pop backing singers, Michael Gira continues with his intentional break from Swans. Anything but a softening of his art -- sample lyrics from "Praise" include "Kill idiot violence, punish greed, punish me" -- New Mother instead lets Gira experiment even further, concentrating on acoustic guitar songs accompanied by a variety of musicians. As with just about anything he tries, the results are highly individual and astonishingly good. Equally noticeable throughout the full 75-minute ...
| | Angels Of Light How I Loved You CD (2001)
Great Annihilator music CDs
$13.09 Arguably Michael Gira's finest work outside of his pioneering noise band, Swans, HOW I LOVED YOU is an atypically low-key, at times downright beautiful album blending acoustic guitar, piano, accordion, banjo, and quirky orchestrated passages underneath Gira's conversational vocals. One of the centerpiece tracks is called "Song For Nico," and comparisons to classic Nico albums like THE MARBLE INDEX and DESERTSHORE are not far off the mark. Serge Gainsbourg circa HISTOIRE ...
| | Swans Soundtracks For The Blind CD (1996)
Great Annihilator songs
$13.55 Choosing to extinguish the band name under which Gira and Jarboe had worked together for so long must not have been an easy step, but when they decided to end Swans with one last studio release as a prelude to a farewell tour, they did so with what turned out to be their biggest and best album ever. Interestingly, the double-disc, two-and-a-half-hour long Soundtracks makes no pretensions at being a uniform creation like The White Album or Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness; Gira's own notes indicate the song sources as being from "hand-held cassette recordings to found sounds, to samples, to loops, to finished multitrack recordings," recorded with ten ...
| | Angels Of Light Everything Is Good Here/Please Come Home CD (2003)
Great Annihilator album
$13.09 Slouching like a pagan funeral parade towards the genre crossroads between 18th century Appalachian murder ballads and 1970's New York experimentalism comes this third Angels of Light album, a true peak in the vast output of leader Michael Gira. The songs are mature yet monstrous, scary yet heartfelt, sparse yet dense, with hypnotic feedback squalls, primal vocal choruses, strings, guitars, tambourines, chimes, and Gira's rich, deep voice, draping itself over the proceedings like a blanket of poisoned molasses. Tracks ...
