Pesado, Presente, Futuro album
$11.19 One of the most well known figures in pop/R&B-leaning jazz, saxophonist David Sanborn had a highly successful stint with the Warner Bros. label from the mid-1970s to the mid-'80s. This collection draws 16 tracks from that period in Sanborn's career, with songs ranging from the funky "Chicago Song" to the smooth "Lesley Ann" to the spare, delicate "Lotus Blossom." For listeners whose only connection to jazz is via Kenny G, this Sanborn sampler is the next logical step.
Compilation producer: Matt Pierson.
Engineers include: Marti Robertson, Michael Hutchinson, Hilary Bercovici.
Personnel: David Sanborn (vocals, saxophone, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, electric piano, Fender Rhodes piano); Marcus Miller (vocals, keyboards, drum programming, percussion programming, background vocals); Bill Jones , Bibi Green, Cliff Braithwaite, Adam Dorn, Michael Ruff, Ava Gardner, Wayman Tisdale (vocals); Hiram Bullock (guitar, electric guitar); Michael Sembello (guitar, synthesizer, programming, background vocals); Steve Jordan , Stanley Jordan (guitar); David Spinozza, Howard "Buzz" ...
| | Dale Watson Truckin' Sessions CD (1998)
Pesado, Presente, Futuro CD music
$10.49 Watson's dedication to country's roots is well documented, but his in-your-face stance toward mainstream country playlists hasn't gained him any footage on the airwaves. That's a damned shame. Following three straight pillar-to-post winners on Hightone Records--CHEATIN' HEART ATTACK, BLESSED OR DAMNED, and I HATE THESE SONGS--hard-core country flag-waver Watson self-released this redline salute to 18-wheel jockeys. Koch International subsequently picked up the album.
The singer wrote all 14 paeans to "white line fever" on this biscuit, and if the subject matter seems a bit cramped in your crib, try gettin' out on the pavement ...
| | Dazz Band 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection CD (2001)
Pesado, Presente, Futuro music CDs
$6.75 Originally released on Motown Records. Includes liner notes by A. Scott Galloway.
An 11-song snapshot of the Dazz Band's Motown stint that includes the not-often-featured "To the Roof," whose origins date back to "Take It to the Woof" by Cleveland, OH-based funk band Morning Maniac led by ex-Dazz Band member Kenny Pettus who's the lead voice on the Earth, Wind and Fire-ish "I Might As Well Forget About Loving You." But other than that, there are no surprises, just straight-ahead digitally remastered Dazz Band blasts that blow you away in CD format ("Let It Whip"'s bassline is hypnotizing). For lovers, "Invitation to Love" and "Knock, Knock" are bonafide heart stirrers and the only two slow jams in the bunch. Not as complete as the 1994 Funkology: The Definitive Dazz Band but dazzling enough. ~ Andrew ...

| | Opeth Ghost Reveries CD (2005)
Pesado, Presente, Futuro CD music
$14.05 New label, new band member, same brilliant Opeth. The most obvious change from their previous two releases, DELIVERANCE (2002) and DAMNATION (2003), is the permanent addition of previous touring keyboard player Per Wiberg. His organ work, specifically, creates new textures only hinted at on previous releases. While many of Opeth's peers have opted to phase out their death-metal vocals entirely, ...
| | Bowery Electric CD (1995)
Pesado, Presente, Futuro music CDs
$13.85 While Bowery Electric's self-titled, self-produced debut has a number of fairly obvious influences--Spacemen 3, Loop, and My Bloody Valentine, for example--the important thing is what they do with those influences. Signed to Chicago's Kranky Records, Bowery Electric weld layered, trance-inducing guitar riffs to powerful beats, creating dense, neo-industrial soundscapes augmented with vocals and pulsing bass notes. The humanizing effect thus generated is often absent in the work of their influences and peers.
Standouts include the swirling "Next to Nothing," which highlights a solid, funky beat and lush ...

Pesado, Presente, Futuro music CDs
$9.15 With Y SIGUE LA MATA DANDO, Grupo Montez De Durango continues its grand tradition of lustrous, affecting music from the rich tradition of the northwestern Mexican state of Durango. While Grupo Montez is oft considered the most prominent acts of Duranguense music, the band actually formed nearer to Canada than Mexico, in the windy city of Chicago, Illinois. Although the octet's sound is just a tad informed by the blues of their adopted city, it works more to accentuate the mournfulness and isolation ...
