With Bright Eyes, Conor Oberst wears his languishing heart on his sleeve, channeling his most personal emotions via intense acoustic-based indie rock. The talented young songwriter seems ready to burst out into something noisier, and he gets that chance with Desaparecidos. On Read Music/Speak Spanish, the band rocks out with more of an emo edge, typified by blaring guitars and raging vocals. With fellow Omaha guitarist/songwriter Denver Dalley, bassist Landon Hedges, keyboardist Ian McElroy, and drummer Matt Baum (Baum and McElroy have toured with Bright Eyes, while Hedges plays in labelmate the Good Life), the group critiques American materialism and consumerism. Songs such as "Greater Omaha" and "Mall of America" resonate with sincerity, while Oberst's vocals quiver and scream about money and society. With such a convincing voice, there's never a time when his lyrics are less than earnest. This debut full-length was recorded in one week, which, as a result, adds to its unabashed rawness. ~ Kenyon Hopkin

Fantastic. This album hit right before Conner got huge in the MTV world. It has all of the heart and soul of anything he did as Bright Eyes, but with moer "umph" if you will. Great songa about the downside of business and "progress," including a great track called "Mall of America." There is a great track that also appeared on a Fat wReckords release benefitting PETA called "Man and Wife, the Latter" which is a perfect light- emo song, if there ever was one. I certainly Conner gets back with tese boys and gets more work out. If you like Bright Eyes, any Emo band, or even a fondness for protest rock of anysort, you won;t be disappointed. Buy it. Now. Another amazing conor oberst project Conor Oberst is easily one of the most talented songwriters out there right now, and he still shows that talent with Desaparecidos. The melodic guitar lines and the genius lyrics make this one album you'll want to own. Submitted by johnmck (Buffalo New York) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.
