There's a great set of names on Best of Diva, Vol. 1: Female Vocal House but not always the right songs. For Kim English you get "Unspeakable Joy" instead of "Nite Life" and for Amber you get "Yes" instead of "This Is Your Night" or "Sexual (Li Da Di)." Plus you get "Hide U" by Suzanne Palmer instead of Kosheen. There's still a bunch of great grandiose music here, but it's not the be all, end all the cover promises. ~ David Jeffries

Released without the usual flurry of hype, Before I Self Destruct fulfills 50 Cent's contractual obligation to the Interscope label. It also doubles as a throwback album, returning the rapper to the hunger and hatred of his early mixtapes while skillfully recasting him as a wannabe upstart. That is, for the most part. The four radio-friendly bedroom numbers that conclude the album are out of place but fairly good to dime-piece beautiful, with the best being the Ne-Yo showcase "Baby by Me" ("Have a baby by me, baby/Be a millionaire"). As pleasing as these final numbers are, if you leave the room after the macho bruiser "I Got Swag" ("I'm infinitely special/Girl the Lord is gonna bless you/If you do what I tell you to do"), you'll return to a confusingly different album, one that's as glamorous ...

Along with its predecessor, this companion to KING OF THE DELTA BLUES SINGERS accounts for most of Robert Johnson's small but staggeringly influential output. Recorded in Texas hotel rooms during a handful of 1936 and 1937 sessions, these cuts capture Johnson's brilliant guitar work (its churning bass line, rhythmic invention, and melodic embellishments still sound fresh), his textured, keening tenor voice, and--most importantly--the subtle, complex interplay between the two.
But what makes Johnson's music immortal is that he always exceeded the sum of his technical expertise (which is considerable).
