The 2002 Essential Records project City on a Hill: Sing Alleluia serves as the follow-up album to City on a Hill: Songs of Praise and Worship, which was released in 2000. Featuring a stellar lineup of artists, including Third Day's Mac Powell, Jennifer Knapp, FFH, Caedmon's Call, and Jars of Clay, City on a Hill: Sing Alleluia builds upon, and ultimately surpasses, the beauty and craftsmanship of its predecessor. Acoustic praise & worship in style and arrangement, the album reflects careful artistic choices in duets, pairing such voices as Knapp and Powell in the album's first radio single, "Sing Alleluia!" Thematically, the project focuses on the holiness and comfort of God in its songs, including Nichole Nordeman's "Holy Is Your Name" and Jars of Clay's "The Comforter Has Come." Joined in artistry and purpose, City on a Hill: Sing Alleluia" is best captured in a quote made by Caedmon Call's Cliff Young in an interview with Essential Records: "...(A)ll of these artists coming together to sing...it's an amazing thing. Arriving just a year after the surprisingly eclectic and electric rock of I Break Chairs, Damien Jurado's Where Shall You Take Me? is something of a return -- but not a retreat -- to the moody minimalism of albums like Ghost of David. Songs like "Amateur Night" and "Omaha" share the acoustic strumming and rustic, shuffling rhythms of his earlier work, but also have a subtly polished confidence that brings out the warmth in Jurado's singing and playing as never before.
