Christopher Cross had a long career, but he peaked early. His eponymous first album produced four Top 20 hits, highlighted by "Sailing," and won five Grammys -- a record at the time. His streak continued with "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)," a collaboration with Burt Bacharach, Peter Allen, and Carole Bayer Sager that served as the theme for Dudley Moore's smash Arthur. Cross delivered a second album, Another Page, that sounded similar to the first and sold respectably well until it generated a genuine hit with "Think of Laura," thanks to General Hospital adopting it as a love theme for their Luke and Laura plot line. After that, Cross slipped away, although he released another five albums between that record and 2002's compilation, The Very Best of Christopher Cross. The problem with this compilation is that it doesn't take into consideration that early peak -- it treats each album with equal respect, with as many songs taken from 1998's Walking in Avalon and Red Room as from 1983's Another Page. While this may satisfy the artist and the die-hards who have listened with dedication over the years, those who loved the warm soft rock of the albums -- either as a guilty pleasure or without shame -- will find this collection profoundly disappointing, since after the eighth track, the collection takes a sharp turn toward fussy, sterile adult contemporary production, and it's never as pleasing to the ear as those first eight songs. This is a problem, because the collection succeeds in

4 stars Yummy...
I think most of the people in the world knew about how "Chris" his music, his voice...so much to say. A Single Best album includes 19 tracks all the way down. I don't think you will still have second thoughts. Jay of Dumaguete City Philippines

4 stars Hits & More
Everyone remembers the hits from the 80s: Sailing, Ride Like The Wind, and Think of Laura. Now with this comprehensive collection, many will realize that Cross is a lot more than that. A true musician and songwriter. A style that could definitely take him up the charts again. Songs like When She Smiles, Swept Away, Walking In Avalon, and the duet with Gigi Worth, Open My Window. It's excellent that this CD has all of the above in one album. Worth the purchase, even to see his progression in his career.

5 stars Cross My Heart
He's no longer high-profile, but he's still making great music for anyone who takes the time for listen. This satisfying and complete set of his top hits from the 80's is a textbook example of great easy listening rock. Great melodies and arrangements combined with Cross's laid back vocals make this "Best Of" a very welcome addition to my collection. All the major hits are here, along with many "should have been" hits" that were a nice surprise. Buy it today, because its worth every penny!

By The Tule River's Edge
Ronda Winter By The Tule River's Edge CD  (2005)

Very Best Of
CD $15.19
Mother and daughter make music a family affair Music has long been a way of life for Ronda Winter and her family. Her own three children and two of her brother's that she brought up began playing instruments early in life - and most play more than one.So it was a natural development that when Winter finally got around to making her first CD album it would come out as a family project - a collaboration between her and her 15-year-old daughter, Charlene Gilstrap. Of the 11 songs on the recording, titled "By the Tule River's Edge," eight are original compositions, five by the daughter and three by the mother."Charlene composed her first song when she was little, about 5," Winter said. "It was a happy little church song called 'I Know it's True,' and she sang it at her brother's baptism. Of course, she didn't know how to write out the music, so I put it down for her."Mother and daughter say they work very well together musically, despite taking almost totally different approaches to both composing and performing.Gilstrap said she begins creating her music at the piano, experimenting with different chords until she finds a sequence and sound she likes. Then she lays in her melody.Winter, however, reverses that process, crafting her melodies first, then adding chords. Moreover, Winter describes her daughter's compositions as having "a dark edge," and her own as lighter, more playful. And her daughter is quick to point out that in performance, her mother brings great intensity to her music, while she, herself, is a little more laid back and relaxed."We actually have a perfect balance," Winter said. "But sometimes I think that if it wasn't for the music, we'd have absolutely nothing in common."In fact, both mother and daughter are heavily immersed in music.A sophomore at Monache High School, Gilstrap plays flute in the concert band and the baritone saxophone in the jazz band. She also sings and plays flute with the choir."I like the flute," she said. "I enjoy playing with the band and the choir and at church events. ...
