Young, loud, and snotty, the Riffs merge that Dead Boys American old-school punk cockiness with the even older original Cockney-ness of English punk (even intentionally aping the Sex Pistols' "No Future" guitar riff at the conclusion of "Down The Street") for a shade over a half-hour of pogo-inducing retro-enjoyment. For a dead horse, it gallops quite nicely, and best yet, you can tell Portland pop-punk posse doesn't care if you disagree. ~ Brian O'Neill
The Riffs: Tony (vocals); Amphetamine Blue, Dog's Body (guitar); Saigon Shakes (bass); Carl (drums).

Dead End Dream
$9.55
| | 999 CD (1978) (Import) Canada
Dead End Dream
$17.39 A truly neglected classic, 999's eponymous debut album was issued in March, 1978, on the back of three stunning 45s -- the romping "I'm Alive," the anthemic "Nasty Nasty," and the oddly ambitious "Me and My Desire." The first and last of these appeared on the album, together with the summer smash that never was, June, 1978's, "Emergency," and it is with these tracks as its benchmarks that 999 should be judged. A ferocious live band, the group harnessed every iota of ...
| | T S O L Beneath The Shadows CD (1982)
Dead End Dream
$11.49 Though True Sounds of Liberty are on Jello Biafra's Alternative Tentacles label, they should not be misconstrued as hardcore. T.S.O.L. is a terrific rock & roll band which has its own style and unique presentation, a punch that obliterates tired clichés and music without direction. The title track, "Beneath the Shadows," swims in perfect production from Thom Wilson, the slashing guitars finding a bed of other sounds to complement their bite. Jack Delauge's vocals have the right amount of angst and questioning of his plight on that tune as well as on "Walk Alone" on side two. "Soft Focus" opens the disc with a charging blitz which is one part Buzzcocks, two parts T.S.O.L. Where Texans the Delinquents were content to backup Lester Bangs or glorify the B-52's, True Sounds of Liberty really do sound as their name suggests, free from the constraints of redundant copying. So what if drummer ...

Dead End Dream
$5.89 From Oakland;Former Members Of Pee Chees,St.James Infirmary++
A superb punk rock band with wild, energetic shows, the Pattern are five guys who do a lot of flailing about while they play their instruments. They're also on the handsome side of the punk rock spectrum, and have more than their fair share of ladies in the audience. Singer Chris Appelgren is the CEO of Lookout Records, an established punk rock label out of ...
| | Toasters Enemy Of The System CD (2002)
Dead End Dream
$11.15 You've got to hand it to the Toasters. When the third ska revival hit in the mid-'90s, they had already been on the scene for over a decade, and bandleader Rob Hingley's Moon Ska NYC label was home to some of America's (and Canada's and England's) best ska bands. They took advantage of ska's new wave of popularity by releasing a truckload of albums by young bands, and while some have criticized Moon for a certain lack of discrimination during that period, there was no question that the Toasters' own releases were of the highest quality. With the subsequent collapse of the ska revival and the partial collapse of the record industry, Moon went out of business, and the Toasters went back to doing what they do best: playing top-notch 2-tone-derived modern ska for live audiences. Their first studio album in five years shows blessedly little in the way of artistic maturation; it's chock-full of the same old straight-up, R&B-influenced ska that the band has been playing since the early '80s. Blues influences are both explicit (as in "Sweet Home Town Jamaica," a blatant rewrite of "Sweet Home Alabama") and implied (as in the song title "Sitting on Top of the World," which has nothing to do with the Howlin' Wolf classic), and tempos are generally brisk; things occasionally slow to a more sedate skank (as on the excellent "Pendulum"), but for the most part this is joyful, upbeat ska. There are two hidden ...
| | Paul McCartney Flowers In The Dirt CD (1989) Bonus Track; England
Dead End Dream
$10.49 All songs written by Paul McCartney except "My Brave Face", "You Want Her Too", "Don't Be Careless Love" and "That Day Is Done" (McCartney/MacManus).
This includes the "Flowers In The Dirt" CD, a family tree poster for the current line-up going back to The Quarrymen days, a tour itinerary, post cards, a bumper sticker and a CD3 of "Party, Party, Party" available only in this set.
FLOWERS IN THE DIRT is arguably McCartney's finest album of the '80s (and '90s, for that matter). A large part of the credit is due to Elvis Costello, who cowrote several of the album's tracks. Costello provided the necessary artistic contrast that had been missing in McCartney's compositional process ever since his parting with Lennon. It doesn't hurt either that McCartney's melodic bass figures are at the heart of many arrangements here, a crucial element lacking in much of his previous solo work.
The Costello collaborations are predictably the strongest offerings: the opening "My Brave Face" is a cheeky, upbeat post-breakup tune, and "You ...
