Mirah's You Think It's Like This But It's Really Like This, was a sweet, sensitive collection of folky indie pop, but her follow-up, Advisory Committee, is such a stunning leap forward that it feels like a true introduction to her music. The album retains some of the homespun lo-fi charm of You Think It's Like This..., but Advisory Committee is also dramatic, even theatrical, as on the stunning first track, "Cold Cold Water." A sweeping spaghetti Western of a song, its swelling strings, galloping percussion, and haunting vocals portray being in love as a life-or-death situation. Only Björk does this type of drama as well, and a large part of the song's success is due to Phil Elvrum's production. Though he and Mirah have collaborated before on Elvrum's Microphones albums, on Advisory Committee their styles complement each other perfectly: His unique, often trippy production techniques give her gorgeous, guileless voice and imaginative songwriting equally creative settings. While "Cold Cold Water" is the album's obvious standout, Advisory Committee features more than a handful of remarkable songs, not the least of which is the epic title track, a virtual rock opera that reclaims the steel drums as a rock instrument. "Mt. St. Helens," which likens the destructive force of a breakup to the famous volcano, begins as a simple folk song before building to a violently emotional climax; "The Garden" uses just an ominous bassline, bludgeoning percussion, and Mirah's commanding vocals to fuse anger, sadness, and love into one raw, simple yet complex emotion. Even Advisory Committee's less ambitious moments are surprising, whether it's the unabashedly sexy gypsy love song "Light the Match" or the seemingly lighthearted slice of Olympia lo-fi new wave, "Recommendation." Most impressively, the many stylistic shifts, both from song to song and within each song, never sound forced; they're more like forces of nature coursing through the album. Indeed, Mirah's songs deal with elemental themes -- love, sex, heat, cold, fire, and water -- in highly artistic and occasionally spiritual terms that are poetic but never pretentious. A tour de force, Advisory Committee packs several albums' worth of emotion, beauty, and creativity into a concise, brilliant package. ~ Heather Phares

Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) 4.5 stars

4 stars Very good
An excellent album, Mirah truly has a beautiful voice. Even though the variations in musical styles within the album take away from an overall cohesiveness, just about every song is good in its own right.

5 stars You'd never know
I would have never known of the band if it hadn't been for Jane magazine. They said it was a must hear, so I bought it. They weren't kidding. Incredible sound! The music is incredible. She has an awesome voice. The songs are very unpredictable. she surprises you with each one. The album will move you. I recommend it to anyone looking for a break from the traditional alternative circuit.

Advisory Committee album
CD $12.49  Audio Samples
A much quieter and more thoughtful album than any of her previous releases, Mirah's C'Mon Miracle doesn't grab the listener by the ears and boldly proclaim its greatness the way that her last album, Advisory Committee, did. Instead of offering the scattershot brilliance of that album or You Think It's Like This but It's Really Like This, C'Mon Miracle is more focused, more mature, and closer to a traditional singer/songwriter's work. This doesn't mean that it's conventional or boring though -- far from it. Even though the subtlety and complexity of songs like "Nobody Has to Stay" and "Promise to Be Kind" show how much her craft has grown over the years, the album still has enough of a K Records feel to keep ...

...And The Happy Accidents
Jon Trio Garner ...And The Happy Accidents CD  (2008)

The Jon Garner Trio is the latest hit from veteran San Diego musicians Jon Garner, Rich Wright, and Michael Cannon. Combining serious chops and a boogie beat, the group combines music that's not afraid to throw the pop-dog a bone, yet allows the band to dig in deep. Not trying to be hip, not trying to be square, just trying to make people feel good.

Consisting of Jon-Gtr/Vox, Rich-Acoustic Bass, and Mikey-Drums/Percussion, the sound is obviously organically rooted. The trio line-up lets the music breath and for the players to stretch out, especially live; deconstructing and re-animating the music as the spirit moves them in real time, real funky time.

The sound can be described as alt-soul and indie-funk. The song "Holiday" draws on indie pop, with a Stereolab type beat and floating pop melody with a touch of soul inflection. "Mission" and "Watermelon Girl" are global hybrids of American groove and late 70's Brazilian funk, similar to music legendary Brazilian artist Jorge Ben-jor. "If I" is a classic Motown or Stax Records type groove. Even the Americana torch song "Laces" contains a steady pulse, a bounce that is crucial to the jon garner trio sound. This is music designed to move you and get you moving at the same time.

Some individual bio stuff:Jon Garner, Guitarist/Vocalist, has always had the heart of a gypsy; restless, roaming, always searching. He was raised on the Beatles and Beethoven, and began playing guitar in the 80's punk rock scene. His musical journey wound it's way through a formal education in Jazz Studies at UMASS, Amherst. An informal education continued in the years immediately after school, wandering across the US, absorbing the indie rock of Chapel Hill, N.C., the blues-inflected everything in Austin, TX, and even the vampire rock in Albuquerque, NM. Eventually landing in San Diego, CA, Jon jumped into the music scene and played every gig that came his way including the latin-groove of Aqua Dulce, the hip-hop rock of D.

Frost, the funk-ska-soul of Blume, and even the avant-garde jazz of the Skelton Key Orchestra. A recent Master of Music degree in Jazz from SDSU gave Jon a renewed commitment to pursuing music that is full of passion and life. Just launched is the groove-pop-acoustic-alt-soul jazz band, the jon garner trio.

Rich Wright, Bassist, and former lineman for San Diego State University suddenly found himself with a lot of time to practice when he blew his knee out during a game. He rekindled his love for his first passion in life, blues and soul music, in particular, the Stax Records sound. Originally a guitarist, Rich switched to electric bass, then acoustic bass, eventually finding his home with 'Cedro', his 110 yr. old Mexican upright bass. Honing ...
