90% Street 10% Rap album
$13.15 Enter the Jacka. The death of 2Pac in the mid 90's ripped the heart out of West Coast Hip Hop. At the same time a young street poet named the Jacka was honing his skills in the Bay Area Rap game. Always open minded, he was influenced by b-boys and thugs, pimps and Imams. The Jacka has since developed into an established, well-rounded, well-versed emcee in the right place to bring the West Coast some serious attention. The Jacka's music is a reflection of his life. He witnessed the birth of the dope game and the drug war that followed, as the battle was waged in his community, on his block, and in his house. Memories of departed loved ones haunt his mind and soul. His release is to share his experiences through his music. Reality hurts. Rap is the Jacka's medicine. That and some purple. Jacka's success proves his mettle as an emcee. He has been featured on over 50 albums over the past six years. His contributions to the Mob Figaz self-entitled album resulted in over 100,000 units sold. His tour with Yukmouth (of the Luniz), C-Bo, the Mob Figaz, and Tech 9ne exposed him to nationwide notoriety. His first solo release (featuring Too $hort, Cormega, Christion, and Yukmouth) in 2002 sold over 30,000 units. Jacka sold these units himself, in the Bay Area and through shipping to one-stops across the country. Though great support came from the Bay Area, sixty percent of Jacka's sales came from outside of California. The Jacka's upcoming album, The Jack Artist, ...

| | Dead Serious It's What You Can't See CD (2002)
90% Street 10% Rap music CDs
$12.95 Dead Serious' volatile brand of hardcore punk explodes with bitterness toward the very scene the band was born into. On It's What You Can't See, Dead Serious unleashes hatred at seemingly everyone within striking distance. Though one may think this would not be an entertaining album to listen to, it surely is, as the band performs this hardcore punk with exceptional prowess. Even the cover of Youth of Today's "Flame Still Burns" blazes with conviction and dedication, almost daring the listener to challenge the harsh words. It's What You ...

| | Booker T & The MG's Best Of Booker T. & The M.G.S CD (2003)
90% Street 10% Rap album
$7.99 There have been few backing bands in the history of rock that were as great as Booker T. & the MG's. As the "Stax band" of the '60s, the quartet's most impressive contribution to popular music was backing some of soul music's greatest names -- Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, etc. But Booker T. & the MG's also issued their own all-instrumental recordings -- scoring quite a few sizable hits on their own. While 2003's Green Onions and Other Hits doesn't include every single Booker T. highlight (at only a mere ten tracks in length, how could it?), it does include some of the band's best-known selections, including the groovy title track (which was used to great effect in the movie American Graffiti), "Hip Hug-Her" (used splendidly in another movie, Barfly), and "Boot-Leg," which features some great Jimi Hendrix-ish guitar courtesy of Steve Cropper. There are a multitude of more extensive Booker T. & the MG's collections out on the market (the single-disc The Very Best of Booker T. & the MG's, the box set Time Is Tight, etc.), but for an affordable sampler of the fantastic Booker T. & the MG's, give Green Onions and Other Hits a try. ~ Greg Prato
If there's a problem with this collection, Best of Booker T. & the MG's, it's that it's way too short. One would be hard up to ...
