Josh Rouse has a magic touch with a pop melody, and he also writes songs that are full of personal feeling, evocative detail, and hauntingly familiar narratives. It's the sort of combination that sticks with listeners and helps make UNDER COLD BLUE STARS one of Rouse's most satisfying efforts. The album still has much of the stark, bittersweet timbre of the artist's first albums, but there is a bit more sonic and thematic variety here, showing a marked development in Rouse's art.
The singer-songwriter was based in Nashville at the time he recorded UNDER COLD BLUE STARS, and the album is still roots-conscious enough to reflect its native turf. But Rouse's take on country and folk is much more akin to genre-bending bands like Lambchop than to Music Row veterans, and the layered production and inviting arrangements illustrate that difference. But, as always, it is Rouse's fine songwriting that sustains the effort, and makes it worthy of attention.

Just try it. Contemporary pop in a classical background. One of the most powerful voices I've ever heard. Each song is creates a visual picture.

His most complete album yet
While Rouse's new CD does not have any truly heavy pop-driven tunes (such as his previous "Late Night Conversation" and "Directions") it is a much more balanced album. All the songs seem necessary to make up this new album. I beleive it is his best work yet, and the best thing I have heard so far this year. A very likeable CD that even fans of your typical lite-rock will thoroughly will enjoy.

Probably my favourite album of his so far......although it comes extremely close to Nashville! Was only introduced to Josh by someone special very recently and I'm kinda addicted now!

I heard this guy on NPR, and the single cut he did was really good. The reviewer was SO positive about it, I couldn't help but buy it. It's truly okay. It is not stellar, and I don't know that I'd buy others by him. I'm impressed that he wrote most of it, but at the same time, most of it sounds exactly alike. In my defense, I don't like alot of the new single artists. I feel that they lack depth and their melodies are so dark and negative!
