The pop gloss of Present is even more apparent on Hot Gossip; Sass Jordan has even rechristened herself "Sas," dropping a letter so as not to confuse mainstream listeners ("What's her name? Ass?"). To her credit, Jordan has fully admitted that Hot Gossip's drum programming, vocal processing, and lighthearted MOR arrangements were at the behest of her record company, which rejected her plans for a straight-up rock record. An industry veteran, she knew the game, and the score. She said "Why not?" and made Gossip. "So Long" and first single "People Talk" are slick and radio-ready, dominated by the blips and trills of synthesizers, and layers of harmony behind Jordan's own robust vocals. Her trademark grit has been refined considerably throughout the album, but Jordan's big voice can't fully be silenced. With its slide guitar fills and fun wah-wah peddle shuffle, "People Talk" could be a slicker version of Bonnie Raitt's "Something to Talk About." "Waste of Time" drifts over a subtle drum track, the bluesy sensuality in Jordan's voice more salacious than 99 percent of pop divas would even attempt, while "Cinnamon" is basic, catchy pop sold by Jordan's sandpaper voice, which recalls both Terence Trent D'Arby and Rod Stewart. There are some misses here; "Miracle," for example, is just too saccharine, even in the blatant pop context of Hot Gossip. But overall the album is an interesting one for Jordan fans, since it can place her in that slick universe, but can never quite contain her. Who else starts an un-ironic stab at pop success with a song that cops the bassline from the Beastie Boys' "Gratitude" and contains the line "Monday morning -- it's never gonna smoke another cigarette time"? ~ Johnny Loftus

| | Hank Williams, Jr Almeria Club CD (2002)
Hot Gossip CD music
$6.19 The Almeria Club was a hard-edged, Alabama honky-tonk that was the site of a hot-tempered 1947 incident that became part of the lore of Hank Williams. More than 50 years later, Hank Jr. recorded an album in that very same notorious joint as a tribute to his father's rebel reputation. In keeping with the down-home theme, the production is agreeably raw and rootsy, bouncing from rockabilly ("Go Girl Go") to jump blues ("If the Good Lord's Willin'") ...
| | Vince Gill Next Big Thing CD (2003)
Hot Gossip music CDs
$12.59 "Next Big Thing" won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance.
This album's title is an ironic one, since Vince Gill has spent plenty of time as the Big Thing in country music. He started out as a hot-pickin' bluegrass guitarist before going solo in the mid-'80s. Some 20 years down the line, Gill has nothing to prove but still plenty to say. As always, his sound is a mix of Rodney Crowell-style ...

| | Pretty Things S.F. Sorrow CD (1968) Bonus Tracks
Hot Gossip songs
$13.95 Digitally remastered by Mark St. John and Andy Pearce (Masterpiece Mastering).
SF Sorrow was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in England in 1967 and Resurrection is a live recording of a radio broadcast of SF Sorrow in it's entirety at Abbey Road Studios in England in 1998.
One of the great lost classics of the psychedelic rock era, S.F. SORROW was recorded at the same time (and in the same studio with the same engineer) as SGT. PEPPER and PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN, and is on par with both. Unfortunately, the commercial fate of the album (and the group) wasn't as rosy as that of its peers, but that doesn't diminish S.F. SORROW'S quality or historical importance. The record marked an important turning point for the Pretty Things, who began as a Stones-ish R&B band, but by this time were ready to take the leap that a sudden personnel change made easier.
The band launched itself whole-heartedly into a more sophisticated style, both musically and lyrically. S.F. SORROW was even more of a concept album than SGT. PEPPER; in fact, thematically the songs hold together a lot better here. The theme concerns the life and times of a British everyman, and the songs are very much in the SGT. PEPPER mold, with production touches and vocal harmonies (not to mention song structures) very much in the Beatles vein, but it was a sound the Pretty Things arrived at more or less independently. Adding to the import of this release is the addition of some excellent, previously unreleased tracks.
No amount of scrutiny can disguise the fact that this rock opera -- built around a short story by Phil May -- is ultimately a bit of a confusing effort. Although The Pretty Things' S.F. Sorrow may have helped inspire Tommy, it is, simply, not nearly as good. That said, it came first, and has quite a few nifty ideas and production touches. The CD reissue on Snapper added four valuable ...
