| | U2 No Line On The Horizon CD (2009)
Beetroot songs
$10.49 There's no shortage of legendary producers in line to work with music world titans U2; when work with Rick Rubin broke off, Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois stepped in. The resulting NO LINE ON THE HORIZON, 2009's offering from the Irish rockers, continues in the grand U2 tradition, as soaring pop anthems like opening single "Get on Your Boots" pair with experimental melanges like "Tripoli," on a striking album featuring touches of all the albums come before, yet hinting at new worlds for Bono to conquer.
After spending the 1990s experimenting with electronic music and returning to arena-ready rock during the first few years of the 21st century, U2 stakes out territory somewhere between those two points on 2009's NO LINE ON THE HORIZON. Enlisting its go-to production trio of Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, and Steve Lillywhite, the Irish quartet seems intent on crafting a quirkier companion piece to HOW TO DISMANTLE AN ATOMIC BOMB, and they succeed with restless tracks such as "Get on Your Boots," which sounds like "Vertigo" hijacked by T. Rex, and "Stand Up Comedy," a wiry number that lets the Edge cut loose with barbed guitar lines. Some of most striking songs on HORIZON are the ones that ...

Beetroot CD music
$19.39 These recordings on Japan's fine P-Vine label basically pick up where its previous volume, Goin' to Move, leaves off, with little chronological overlap. Regarded by some insiders as the "silver group collection" (because all but one of these quartets have the word "silver" in their names), these sides were cut between 1944 and 1950 when gospel music was still on the commercial boom. The other side of this, of course, is that these groups were all from the ...
| | Davis Sisters 1949-1952 CD (2003)
Beetroot music CDs
$14.35 Recorded between 1949 & 1952. Includes liner notes by Opal Louis Nations.
The Davis Sisters carved out their reputation singing gospel on the Pentecostal circuit following World War II. Sisters Ruth, Thelma, Audrey, and Alfreda Davis were joined by pianist/singer Curtis Dublin and singer Imogene Green to create a vocal powerhouse. The group's secret weapon was its big sound, giving the impression that a choir, not a group, was singing. 1949-1952 captures the group's first recordings and it's easy to see -- listening to cuts like "We Shall Walk in the Sunlight of the Lord" and "When He Spoke" -- why Apex and Gotham signed the group. It's also easy to see, listening to tracks like "Get Away Jordan," how the Davis Sisters' influence was passed on to Aretha Franklin and Mavis Staples. There's a concentrated exuberance to these recordings, as though the sisters' sound -- raw, earthy, and inspired -- had been recorded while a tent meeting was in progress. In song after song, Ruth's lead is ...
| | Vintage Chill Vol. 4: Winter CD (2003)
Beetroot songs
$14.09 This is the fourth volume in Kriztal Entertainment's seasonal Vintage Chill series, arranged appropriately around the theme of winter and wine. But while the set has its moments, it's unclear what's necessarily vintage here. Besides the De-Phazz remix of Ella Fitzgerald's "Wait 'Til You See Him" (culled from 2002's Verve Remixed), the majority of Vintage Chill, Vol. 4 clicks along on a gently insisting beat somewhere between downtempo and electronicized smooth jazz. Sure, traditional vocal jazz is a muse for Emo's "First Time Experiences [Povo Remix]," and Micatone's "Quiet Boy" supports Lisa Bassenge's dusky cabaret voice with a gently tweaked mix of keyboard soundscapes and jazz club sidemen. But while vintage sounds flutter nicely throughout the album, it's electronics ...
