The Salteens infuse their immensely likeable power pop with so much enthusiasm and energy -- and so very little pretension -- that even though their debut, Short-Term Memories, breaks absolutely no new musical ground, it's virtually impossible to deny the band's sheer charisma and charm. While frontman Scott Walker bears an almost eerie vocal similarity to Sloan's Jay Ferguson, the group favors a much more simple and immediate approach than their Canadian pop confederates. A gifted writer, Walker crafts familiar but fresh melodies distinguished as much by their bounciness as by their brevity -- only two of the record's ten tracks even surpass the three-minute mark, cramming a remarkable number of hooks, harmonies, and handclaps into short-but-sweet gems like "Kelly Nicoll," "Bubba Da," and "Nice Day." ~ Jason Ankeny

Tom Harrell has been widely admired for his skills both as a player and composer, which he manages in spite of an ongoing battle with schizophrenia. These sessions were recorded not long after he left the Phil Woods Quintet, where he played to critical acclaim for six years. Ten potent originals are heard on this reissue, which includes two bonus tracks omitted from the initial release (both of which appeared on the CD Visions). With the potent rhythm section of pianist James Williams, bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Adam Nussbaum, plus guitarist John Abercrombie, tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano, and soprano saxophonist Dave Liebman on selected tracks, every track stands out. The session explodes out of the gate with the fiery "Eons," showcasing Harrell, Lovano, and Williams (the latter who sadly passed away in 2004 from cancer). The trumpeter's soft bossa nova "Sail Away" has long since become one of his best known compositions; this version features Harrell at his peak. "Dancing Trees" also has a soft, Brazilian air, and added guest Cheryl Pyle on flute. ~ Ken Dryden
Recorded in 1989 and re-released on Original Jazz Classics in 2003, Sail Away is a fine outing by trumpeter Tom Harrell. He's joined by pianist James Williams, bassist Ray Drummond, and drummer Adam Nussbaum. A handful of guests -- flutist Cheryl Pyle, guitarist John Abercrombie, tenor Joe Lovano, and soprano Dave Liebman -- fill out the arrangements on ten instrumentals (two are bonus cuts from Visions). Together, Harrell and company add a contemporary spin to mainstream jazz. The ten-minute track "Dream in June" takes a number of adventurous flights of fancy without ever losing track of its base. Both Harrell and Abercrombie's solos build complex, forceful ideas against a backdrop of Nussbaum's powerful drumming, creating a dense sound that belies predictability. Harrell and Lovano's horns entwine on "Glass Mystery"'s intro, concocting a late-night mood for this lovely piece, while Pyle's flute adds the right touch to the meditative "Dancing Trees." Each track of Sail Away unfolds like an impressionistic canvas, bursting with color and light, with every brush stroke working toward the sum total of the painting.
