Limp's third album, which is self-titled, finds the band back after three years since their previous release. This album finds the band playing very mature pop-punk, not like much of the juvenile punk on Honest Don's and Fat Wreck Chords. A darker edge is also displayed, although it's restrained. However, it will no doubt leave the listener pleasantly surprised. Just like much of the pop-punk catalog, Limp's album is filled with hooks and melodies a plenty. The closest comparison one might be able to draw is to Slick Shoes, although Limp seems to do a pretty good job of separating themselves from the pack. Standard fare in many regards, but what the band does, they do well on this 11-song disc. ~ Kurt Morris

| | 999 CD (1978) (Import) Canada
Limp CD music
$17.39 A truly neglected classic, 999's eponymous debut album was issued in March, 1978, on the back of three stunning 45s -- the romping "I'm Alive," the anthemic "Nasty Nasty," and the oddly ambitious "Me and My Desire." The first and last of these appeared on the album, together with ...

| | Chris Stamey Travels In The South CD (2004)
Limp songs
$13.75 A founding leader of the influential cult band the dB's, Chris Stamey has spent most of last 15 years producing other people's discs (Alejandro Escovedo, Yo La Tengo, Whiskeytown) rather than creating his own. Not counting a 1995 instrumental album, Travels in the South marks his first record since 1991, when he released both the solo Fireworks and Mavericks, a duet disc with his old dB's partner Peter Holsapple. South, however, shows little sign of rustiness. The album kicks off with the glorious "14 Shades of Green," a chimey gem that takes a nostalgic look at a hometown. This leadoff track also establishes the theme of traveling that runs through the disc. Songs like "Insomnia," "Ride," and the title track all touch upon the feeling of life in transit. The sublime "In Spanish Harlem" takes a Paul Simon-esque look at New York City but with a decidedly eased-back Southern tempo. The entire album, in fact, rides along at a leisurely pace, with the majority of songs surpassing the four-minute mark. But Stamey uses his production savvy to build these songs into "mid-life symphonies," to make Brian Wilson's phrase more age-appropriate. A solitary piano and mournful pedal steel help to accentuate the longing in "Insomnia." A Byrds-ian guitar riff weaves through "Alive" and heavenly Beach Boys harmonies swell in "Kierkegaard." ...
| | Mission Of Burma Gun to the Head CD 2 CD Set
Limp album
$12.75 Taking its cue from late-1970s British art-punks like Wire and Gang of Four, Boston's Mission of Burma developed a unique, angular sound that was at once pre-eminent in and definitive of the burgeoning US post-punk scene. For a band whose initial studio recordings consisted only of one full album and one EP, they were enormously influential, so this compilation comes off like the Dead Sea Scrolls of American indie rock, nearly every song foreshadowing a group that would appear years later. Things kick off with the band's signature song, "That's When I Reach for My Revolver," ...
| | Grandpaboy Dead Man Shake CD (2003)
Limp CD music
$11.39 So, like all of Paul Westerberg's loyal fans, you've been dreaming of the day that the great cranky genius of slop-rock would record a blues album, right? OK, probably not, but Westerberg went and did it anyway (under the guise of his alter ego, Grandpaboy), and Dead Man Shake turns out to be a better album than you might expect under the circumstances. Like the previous Grandpaboy long-player, Mono, Dead Man Shake was recorded in Westerberg's basement studio, with "Winthrope Marion Purcival V" once again handling all the instruments, and though one can't help but wish the guy would find a decent drummer, the shabby but emphatic sound of these tracks at once honors the blues-leaning material on deck and suits Westerberg's musical instincts quite well. (The thick echo and chunky guitar textures also recall the sound of the late-'50s/early-'60s Chess Records sessions, though one doubts the similarity was at all intentional.) Dead Man Shake was released around the same time as the soundtrack to Westerberg's documentary video Come Feel Me Tremble, and both seem to be put together from Westerberg's B-list material, but Dead Man Shake in comparison appears to be B-plus product; his 12-bar meandering on "No Matter What You Say" and "Natural Mean Lover" allow him to make good use of his snarkiness, "Vampires and Failures," "O.D. Blues," and "Get a Move On" suggest they could have been A-list material with a bit more work, and if the Minneapolis City Council ...
| | Rumah Sakit CD (2000)
Limp music CDs
$12.49 Rumah Sakit's forays into sound are a heady mix of mathy time signatures and dense musical passages that craftily, oftentimes dreamily, intersect. The quartet shares the same instrumentation as like-minded modern prog misfits Don Caballero: two guitars, bass, and drums, and, of course, no vocals to sully the mix. But this San Francisco outfit isn't as consistently crushing as their Pittsburgh brothers, and it's not uncommon to find the musicians idly lying in the grass and gazing up at evocative clouds (metaphorically speaking, anyway). The epic "Scott & Jeremiah" begins with a lovely if slightly morose pattern, sounding something like a lonesome grandfather clock, until the intensity incrementally increases and we find ourselves swimming in interlocking, clipped phrases with occasional explosions of sound that bulldoze over the initial mellowness. A wry humor rears it's head on "Careful With That Fax Machine," but despite the title the song owes less to Floyd and more to King Crimson, at least the Red and Discipline albums. A breakneck opening pattern builds and builds until shattering into a greasy, jazzy groove, courtesy of bassist Kenneth. Guitar players Mitch and John provide some well-placed squeals, squawks, and ...
| | Twisted Sister We're Not Gonna Take It And Other Hits CD (2003)
Limp songs
$10.49 If it's a straight-to-the-point, bare-bones Twisted Sister collection you're looking for, then the budget-priced We're Not Gonna Take It and Other Hits is a go. But don't be fooled into thinking this is a thorough overview of this cross-dressing metal crew -- it only weighs in at a meager ten tracks in length. Still, there's no denying one important fact if you're a casual fan and just want the group's ...

Limp CD music
$15.25 Although he'll be forever best known as Bruce Springsteen's go-to guitar player post-Steven Van Zandt, Nils Lofgren is an accomplished solo artist in his own right, having issued numerous critically acclaimed (yet often commercially overlooked) solo albums. He's also issued countless live albums over the years, and 2003 saw the latest entry, Live. As with most double-disc live sets from veteran rockers, various entries from Lofgren's career are touched upon -- including a wink to his early band, Grin (which is represented ...
