Decapitated's sophomore album finds the Polish death metal prodigies taking their blistering style to the next level of sickness, and they deliver one of the strongest metal albums since Morbid Angel's Covenant. The vocals sound less homo sapien and more like demonic hellspawn, which intertwines with the exquisite death metal opera being performed by the rest of the band. The drumming here is relentless, pounding its way into the skull with furious determination. Occasionally this hammering process of battering the listener's eardrums seems similar to Brazilian death metal masters Krisiun, which is quite a feat. Decapitated must be one of the best groups inhabiting the European countryside as far as guitar playing goes; they could hold their own with even the great Iron Maiden. Decapitated may still be young men, but their brand of uncompromising metal stands as a testament for the legacy of metal as a whole. Nihility is a remarkable album that displays some of the best death metal to be released in the early 21st century. ~ Jason D. Taylor

| | Decapitated Winds Of Creation CD (2000)
Nihility CD music
$14.05 In the dark, murky realm of death metal, perhaps no band is more worthy of taking hold Excalibur's hilt and leading the next charge down the mountain into fiery oblivion than Poland's Decapitated, and one need look no further for proof than on the band's 2000 debut, Winds of Creation. Much has been made of the band's supposed "tender" age (the average age of the members was around 18 when Winds of Creation was released), and in fact, early on, they were slighted from the respect they would have otherwise been due because of this; however, it must be remembered that a certain gruff-throated, engine-wristed young vocalist/guitarist for another certain popular metal band was only 18 when his band's debut, Kill 'Em All, was released, and needless to say, as is the case here, tender had nothing to do with it. Ironically, in the eyes of many metal fans, Winds of Creation is almost as much of an astonishingly groundbreaking album as Kill 'Em All was in its day. To begin with, the band has a seemingly effortless understanding and command of both their instruments and death metal's highly stylistic requirements. The mind-bendingly blistering technical virtuosity would be amazing in a group of older musicians, much less for a band of teenagers, and better yet, they refrain from slipping into the routine, ...

Nihility music CDs
$13.89 In the mid-'90s, bands like Nile, Cryptopsy, and Krisiun were stepping up to resuscitate the slumping death metal genre. Decapitated are part of the next generation of bands -- they were born around the time Morbid Angel and Death were recording their first demo tapes and in their early teens by the mid-'90s. For them, death metal has always been around, and they seem to live and breathe it. The downside is that they're content to work with the already established foundations laid down by earlier death metal bands. The upside, which more than compensates here, is that they've obviously done their homework, ...
| | Necrophagist Epitaph CD (2004)
Nihility songs
$12.65 The first album by Necrophagist, 1999's Onset of Putrefaction, was actually a completely solo recording made by Turkish guitar prodigy Muhammed Suicmez, who also handled the vocals, bass guitar, and drum programming. Slowly but steadily, that album became legendary in the death metal underground for its over-the-top technical excess and death-defying guitar heroics. As a result of that notoriety, Suicmez was able to put together a full four-piece band of live musicians with enough skill and endurance to play his difficult, fast, and intricate compositions. Epitaph is the first album by this full lineup, and as expected, it features an almost nonstop assault of complex, technical death metal with an emphasis on Suicmez's lead guitar. And indeed, on a technical level, Necrophagist outpaces just about every death metal band out there, including the likes of Anata, Cephalic Carnage, and maybe even standard-setters Cryptopsy. The guitars race in tandem, delivering airtight 32nd and 64th note runs in odd time signatures, with flawless double-bass drumming and gurgling slap basslines underpinning it all. As technical as it is, this album is surprisingly melodic, with a mix of Gothenburg-tinged and neo-classical-type ...

| | Decapitated Organic Hallucinosis CD (2006)
Nihility CD music
$13.85 With the departure of their founding vocalist -- the heartwarmingly named Sauron -- the remaining members of Polish death metal veterans Decapitated have apparently decided to mark the installment of his successor, Covan, with a wholesale change of direction for their fourth studio album, Organic Hallucinosis. Launching off of their new frontman's more versatile skills in delivering various stages of deathly grunting, the band has stepped up the complexity of their songwriting to match, while establishing ...
