| | Z-Ro Life Of Joseph W. Mcvey CD (2004)
Z-Ro
$14.29 A veteran of 10 albums at the age of 26 and an acclaimed member of Houston's Screwed Up Click, Z-Ro is much more complex than his surface or the simple intro of THE LIFE OF JOSEPH W. MCVEY may imply. Prolific output isn't the only thing he has in common with hardcore legends such as Too Short and Rap-A-Lot icon Scarface; Z-Ro also cuts his hard-edged street delivery with a haunting, almost hypnotic, introspection.
As this album reveals, Z-Ro deeply feels every word he sings. With "I Hate U B***h," the song is not so much a misogynistic rant as the pained, primal gut-reaction of a devoted man who's been hurt by the object of his affection (the line after the title is "I never thought I would say [it]"). On the melodic "Why?," he ponders the insanity of the thug life, wishing he could be loving and simple, spiritual and comfortable, but uncertain of how to find his escape. THE LIFE OF JOSEPH MCVEY reveals a tortured soul who concurrently knows himself and doesn't understand a thing, making this an achingly honest record that deserves to break Z-Ro through to new audiences.

| | Z-Ro Let The Truth Be Told CD (2005)
Z-Ro
$15.05 This sort of variety marks LET THE TRUTH BE TOLD, a wonderfully dynamic record that finds the under-the-radar rapper continuing to do what he does best, in both viciously dark and easy-going manners. On "Platinum," Z-Ro raps about the softer and harder sides of the business over a lush backing track, while on "I'm a Soldier" he reverts to edgy posturing with sufficient force. Although Z-Ro churns out records, he puts his heart into each one, and LET THE TRUTH BE TOLD stands as prime example of his skill.
Incredibly prolific Houston rapper Z-Ro opens his 2005 release, LET THE TRUTH BE TOLD, by paying homage to one of hip-hop's all-time classics, Eric B. & Rakim's "Paid in Full," musing over the familiar bassline (from Dennis Edwards's "Don't Look Any Further") before launching into a breathless freestyle bout. While it's fairly audacious to conjure up comparisons to a master MC like the illustrious Rakim, Z-Ro holds his own on "Mo City Don (Freestyle)" with a cleverly unfurling rhyme. He follows that light and playful rap with the utterly hard "The Mule," featuring Juvenile and Devin the Dude, which is full of bluster and violent braggadocio.

| | Peggy Scott-Adams Lover's Holiday: The Very Best Of Peggy Scott & Jo Jo Benson CD (1999)
Z-Ro
$11.59 A large helping of Peggy Scott and Jo Jo Benson's recordings, a raucous duet who didn't exactly sing into each other eyes like Marvin & Tammi. They're more like the Soul Children; on some cuts Benson sounds like J. Blackfoot. The energetic duo bum rushes every song like ferocious, feeding lions. If a song didn't succeed, it wasn't because of lack of effort on their part. "Lover's Holiday" and "Soul Shake," two chart hits, are interspersed among 22 other grooves that received limited local or regional plays, and in some cases ...

| | Gene & Eunice Go On Ko Ko Mo CD (2001) (Import) United Kingdom
Z-Ro
$16.79 The 28 tracks here give an extensive overview of the duo's '50s recordings, dominated by 13 tracks from their 1955-1958 Aladdin singles, including the Top Ten R&B single "This Is My Story." There's also their most famous song, the original version of "Ko Ko Mo" released on a 1954 Combo single; the 1959 mid-sized chart hit "Poco-Loco," from a Case single; seven previously unissued sides the pair did for Combo; a 1953 solo Gene Forrest single; a 1960 single by Eunice, billed here to Eunice Levy; and a previously unissued Combo track by Eunice Levy and the Four Feathers. It's rather innocuous mid-'50s R&B for the most part, heavy on nonsense song titles like "Hootchy Kootchy," "Hi Diddle Diddle," and "Doodle Doodle Doo." But it does have its importance as a document of one of the early male-female duos in rock music. Actually, like much Los Angeles black music of the time, it's really R&B starting the transition to rock & roll, but it's close enough. The jump blues backing moves the upbeat cuts along well, if predictably, and the two could harmonize well on smoochers like "This Is My Story." The unreleased tracks are really sketchy 1954 demos (including an early version of "This Is My Story") with no instrumental backing save piano. ~ Richie Unterberger
Known variously as "The Togetherness Kids," "Brown Satin," "The Poco Loco Kids," & "The Nation's Sweethearts," Gene & Eunice were among the most accomplished duets of the rock 'n roll era, and were excellent songwriters, too. Their three ...
| | Ramsey Lewis & Nancy Wilson Simple Pleasures CD (2003)
Z-Ro
$11.79 Longtime fans of these two jazz legends may know that they met originally in the early '60s as clients of the same manager; and recorded their first duet album in 1984, Two of Us, which was produced by Stanley Clarke. Based on the wonderful piano-vocal rapport (with brilliant horn arrangements courtesy of Llew Matthews) on this disc and 2002's Meant To Be, it's a good thing that Ramsey Lewis and Nancy Wilson caught up with each other in 2001, when Wilson played the Ravinia Festival (Lewis serves as Artistic Director). Simple Pleasures features both vocals and instrumentals with a wide range of dynamics, from his romantic but too subtle piano melody on "In My Life," to Wilson's fiery belting over a sea of snazzy horns on "Give Me Something Real." It's great to hear her let loose, but the slower, sensual side of her vocal prowess (on tunes like "Lost Up in Loving You") is even more inviting. They choose their material wisely, from the hip classic pop of Debarge's "All This Love" to "God Bless The Child," which they do in a late night, torchy style. The best of the five, Lewis' only performance is the swinging trio rendition of the R&B classic "Ooh Child," which takes the original melody in fast and furious directions. Let's hope the conversation between them continues indefinitely. ~ Jonathan Widran

| | Marques Houston MH CD (2003)
Z-Ro
$8.55 Marques Houston's career began at a rather tender age when, under the nickname Batman, he was one third of the pre-teen (and later teen) group Immature, which scored a Top 10 pop and R&B hit with "Never Lie." Nearly a decade later, the once precocious crooner, aged 22, finds his Immature linemates LDB & Romeo wishing him good tidings on the intro of his solo record MH. Houston makes it fairly clear from the outset that he's all grown, coming on strong on opening track "Clubbin'" as he implores "ladies show me love" as he sets up the seduction scene. He puts the exclamation point on his maturity as a dancehall beat pumps in and Jermaine Dupri and the So So Def Crew drop by on "Pop That Booty." However, Houston makes it clear on the very next track ("That Girl") that he still knows how to plant the smooth-love groove. The rest of the album remains in a soulful grind somewhere between Luther and Stevie, making MH one solid debut record.
2003 album features guests Joe Budden, Pied Piper and Jermaine Dupri plus 2 bonus tracks 'That Girl' (remix feat. Pied Piper) & 'Clubbin' (remix feat. Joe Budden). Tug.

| | Yellow 5 Demon Crossing CD (2005)
Z-Ro
$11.59 Yellow #5's gritty debut, the wild and whiskey-soaked Demon Crossing, echoes Tender Prey-era Nick Cave and early Concrete Blonde filtered through a broken pint glass. The Los Angeles by way of New Orleans trio is led by the purely nocturnal bass/accordion/vocal prowess of Molly McGuire, whose delivery is as whip-crack volatile as it is undeniably sensual. McGuire and guitar player Dave Catching, who split their time with Mondo Generator, a Nick Oliveri of Queens of the Stone Age side project, are the perfect left and right branch to Kyuss and Fu Manchu drummer Brant Bjork's formidable trunk. The three take on a well-worn dirty smoky blues-based form of bar band posturing and make it uncomfortably real and refreshingly atmospheric. Bookended by a carnival-gone-wrong accordion instrumental, Demon Crossing effortlessly thunders through explosive, beat-heavy rockers like "Auto Pilot" and "Seven Addictions" with mad glee, but it's the album's lazier numbers that stick to the listener's eyelids -- "Moon Man," with its dripping circular slide riff and "Deviant Angel"'s University-era Throwing Muses languidness are both custom built for that 3 a.m. drive home from God knows where. Described by the band as "Inspired by the twin moons of a nasty breakup and a desire to musically re-create the atmosphere of Nola's Circle Bar, to whose recently passed owner Kelly Keller the album is dedicated," Demon Crossing feels ...
