The Chieftains are the leading practitioners of traditional Irish music throughout the world, having broken down musical and cultural barriers to bring it to world audiences since the early 1960s. This BEST OF collection highlights some of their most riveting work. Whether with Paddy Moloney's virtuoso Uilleann piping, or Kevin Cunniffe's superb Gaelic singing, this ensemble has really made an impact on Ireland and the world.
Standout tracks on BEST OF include the very exciting "Boil the Breakfast Early," a reel that features a wonderful bodhran (goatskin frame drum) introduction by Cunniffe and Matt Molloy's silken flute playing. The lovely slow air "Speic Seoigheach" spotlights Moloney on tin whistle and Derek Bell on medieval harp. It's at once carefree and melancholy, conjuring romantic visions of small town life in old Eire.

Best Of The Chieftains songs
$11.99 On their fourth album, the Northwest based former surf-rockers extricate themselves completely from the reverb-laden instrumental rock waters that grounded their early sound. They now prefer to ride the waves of grungy American garage punk instead, a move they had been shifting toward on their last release. The results are pretty much what you'd expect: loud, brash, trashy guitar/organ-fueled rock with roots in early Paul Revere, the Standells, the Sonics, and Mitch Ryder. Like fellow revisionists the Chesterfield Kings, the Lyres, and the Original Sins, the Boss Martians ...
| | Cynthia Cathcart Alchemy Of A Rose CD (2002)
Best Of The Chieftains album
$17.19 Cynthia Cathcart recaptures the original sound of the music of Scotland and Ireland in this collection of melodies played on the wire strung harp. The uniquely bell-like resonance of brass, silver and gold strings carries the listener to a time when legends lived and magic was a part of every day.Reviews of the CD:Real words by real people...From those who have written to Cynthia's website after hearing the recording:Cynthia - I'm used to "lovely", yet over-produced harp recordings that are lush, but not necessarily much more than that. Alchemy has a very mysterious, haunting, sometimes dark, often sparsely-produced quality to it that actually allows the harp to stand out. And so much of it is playful and self-affirming as well (self-affirming in that the music sort of lifts you up). As I was listening, it seemed more and more like I was listening to the wire harp as It was probably played long ago, not a commercialized pretty picture, but a whole feeling that I was hearing music for a moment through a window of time. Regards, Charley Your new CD is absolutely ...
