1973's FLYING TEAPOT is a GONG milestone. It's the first installment in their legendary "Radio Gnome Trilogy" and a transitional point between the underground psychedelia of CAMEMBERT ELECTRIQUE and the artier, more ethereal sound they later developed. TEAPOT is more visceral, less cerebral than its successors, and the catchy ensemble riffs of CAMEMBERT are still present. The arrival of virtuoso guitarist Steve Hillage and synth wizard Tim Blake represented a great leap forward, though. Blake concentrated exclusively on ambient electronic effects and soundscapes a la early Hawkind, leaving harmonic development to the other band members. Hillage's fleet-fingered jazz-rock solos and arsenal of effects upped the musicianship a notch and reinforced the spacy jazz elements already in place.
Whether you're able to follow the willfully confusing storyline or not, the elaborate mythological world created by Daevid Allen is loads of fun when wrapped around music as inspired as this psychedelic art-jazz-space rock amalgam. The key players are a group of gnomes from another planet who arrive in a flying teapot (stoner imagery plays heavily in hippie Allen's vision) to save the world (or something). Actually, some surprisingly intellectual/philosophical messages were contained in the trilogy, leavened heartily by the irrepressible Allen's healthy sense of humor.

Having recruited Steve Hillage and Tim Blake, Gong embarked on the first of a trilogy of recordings telling the tale of Zero the hero and his adventures with flying taepots, invisible radio gnomes and the pot head pixies.
The story is a loose arrangement of interesting themes for the tunes which are all very good. Buy the "Radio gnome trilogy" together and listen to this CD first.

i left school in 75,a pal baught the album we listend to it all night long ,loosing all concept of time(and space) its a relaxing and stimulating piece of artistic expression.33 years later i'm still amazed at its eclectic theme and style. ps have a cup of tea '.

Standouts include "Bitter-Sweet," a clear homage to the bombast and fading glory of German cabaret music, and the work of Kurt Weill in particular, and "Casanova," a dense funk track carried along on a complex bass line and a wavering synthesizer. The album's last track, "Prairie Rose," leads off with a heavily echoed guitar solo, and features some of Andrew Mackay's most expressive saxophone playing. Originally released on Track (612002/613002). Released in the U.S. on Decca (4950/74950) in 1968.
Only three albums into its recording career, the Who had already begun to distance itself from its proletarian R&B beginnings. Here, songwriter Pete Townshend follows up on the rock-opera idea he had introduced on A QUICK ONE with the extended, multi-part composition "Rael" and would later expand upon with TOMMY. The band had also begun exploring the form of the concept album. The songs are connected by bits of fake radio commercials and brass fanfares, and there's a little of everything thrown into the mix. All-out rockers like the vengeful "I Can See For Miles" vie for the listener's attention with the romantic declarations of "Our Love Was" and the soft, folky "Maryanne With The Shaky Hand" on this impressively eclectic album.
