Camino Sin Regreso album
$15.65 A TODOS CUBA LE GUSTA was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Tropical Latin Performance.
A lively, spontaneous record that manages to sound both relaxed and forceful at the same time, A Toda Cuba Le Gusta shows off the talents of many of Cuba's elder statesmen of Afro-Cuban jazz. Over gently pulsating conga grooves and low-register ostinatos, such luminaries as pianist Ruben Gonzalez and singer Manuel "Puntillita" Licea float dramatic melodies, as their solo contributions are answered by brass section chords as thick and sweet as cane syrup. Although it is Ruben Gonzalez' presence on this album that gets the most attention, his tendency towards relentless chromaticism becomes tiresome early on, especially when it is contrasted with the exquisite phrasing and tremulous beauty of singers such as Licea, Raul Planas, and Ibrahum Ferrer. As would be expected, the trumpets blare with traditional Cuban bravado, evoking gentle romance and fiery passion with equal ease. Even the resident gringo, Ry Cooder, gets in some choice licks on "Alto Songo." The relative lack of dynamic movement in most of these songs may lead to them blending together in the ear of the listener, ...

| | River City Rebels No Good No Time No Pride CD (2002)
Camino Sin Regreso music CDs
$9.79 The third album from River City Rebels finds this group of Vermont youngsters growing up a little bit, learning from past albums, and perhaps finally coming into their own. The 12 songs on No Good No Time No Pride are all pretty short and fast. Most are upbeat in their structure, while the lyrics are typical teenage angst combined with a somber outlook on life ("Aborted"). Topics addressed include questioning religion and capitalism, amongst other things, and all the typical punk rock life philosophy. Musically, the Rebels aren't utilizing their horns nearly as much, which leads one to wonder why they have them, although there is some novelty to being a punk band with horns as opposed to a pure ska band. On some songs the tenor sax and trombone are hardly used and when heard, they're put down far in the mix ("Life's a Drag"). While the primary structure follows loosely along the lines of the Clash mixed with the attitude of the Sex Pistols, the drumming is tight and solid; it's quite obvious that drummer Eric Schmidt has some degree of talent more than what the average punk fan would expect a punk drummer to have. While this album is not nearly as intolerable as previous efforts and the lyrical content seems a bit more intelligent (but definitely still punk), it still smacks of a certain degree of immaturity, which isn't surprising since the oldest member of the band was 23 at the time of recording. Of special note is the enhanced portion of the CD, which has ...

| | Nick Petrone New Day Has Begun CD (2001)
Camino Sin Regreso album
$11.39 For as long as he can remember, Nick Petrone has been, to quote poet Maya Angelou, "singin' and gettin' merry like Christmas." As his family will attest, ever since Nick first opened his mouth, he has not shut up. As a young boy, he listened to such artists as Donna Summer, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Marvin Gaye, and Kiss...yes, Kiss. But it was during Nick's frequent visits to Baptist Churches throughout New York that Nick truly felt the transporting power of Gospel music. He knew he wanted to sing like that - from his soul.As time went on, Nick realized there was a universe of sounds beyond American pop and soul music that he wanted to incorporate into his songs. Through working with composer Elizabeth Swados, he learned about world music and the unique voicings of instruments from other cultures - the Australian didgeridoo, the South African marimba, the Latin American clave, and the flexibility of the human voice itself. In the early '90s, Nick discovered the Fordham University radio station, WFUV, whose eclectic playlist changed his life. Through listening to artists like Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Dar Williams, and John Gorka, Nick learned to write more autobiographically. He began constructing more truthful, introspective stories set to music. Nick's true love is live performance. In 1996 he performed on the Rosie O'Donnell Show. He's had the great privilege of performing with Donna Summer, Elton John, and Marc Anthony, and has been a featured soloist with the Marble Collegiate Church Community Gospel Choir and the new Metro Mass Choir, both directed by Michael David Brown. ...
