| | V I P Club Urban Life CD V I P Club Discography of CDs
Despite a drum machine-heavy production style, Urban Life, the second release by fusion supergroup V.I.P. Club, succeeds in no small way due to the organic '70s soul-oriented songwriting by Wolfgang Haffner. Haffner's songs combine the funky, disco-oriented pop melodies of groups such as Earth, Wind & Fire and the Crusaders with a contemporary, European production style not unlike the Brand New Heavies. Although these are primarily instrumental jams, background vocals are heard on a few tracks, drawing out the melodic lines and making for a very listenable session. The tracks also benefit greatly from the presence of trumpeter Till Bronner, whose fuzzy, warm, and lithe tone is reminiscent of Chet Baker and Eddie Henderson. Another standout addition is the trombone of Fred Wesley, featured on the Pleasure-ific title track. Other major guest players include Bob James, Chuck Loeb, and Roy Ayers. ~ Matt Collar

| | Jeff Lorber Philly Style CD (2003)
Urban Life CD music
$11.95 (MP3 Available for Download) The soul-jazz minded keyboardist has been a legendary pop-fusion and smooth-jazz artist for several decades, and producer Steven Dubin had been a huge smooth-jazz force for several years (working with Peter White, Richard Elliot and Najee). The two Philadelphia natives never crossed paths (despite having gone to the same high school and played the same clubs), however, until Lorber hired him to work on his album Kickin' It. This disc continues the fun, feisty and funky retro-soul vibe of that disc in an even fuller celebration of their Phillyness. Lorber is so well known for his old school Rhodes textures (which were "new school" when he first did them in the 70s) that it's nice to hear so much classy acoustic piano here, as on the seductive, horn drenched opening track "Under Wraps." Lorber uses the Rhodes as an underpinning ...

| | Steve Oliver 3-D CD (2004)
Urban Life music CDs
$14.79 (MP3 Available for Download) As one reviewer said of the cheerful music and personality of this increasingly popular voice of smooth jazz guitar, it's Disneyland all the time with him. In other words, Positive Energy, the name of his second genre disc, wasn't just a happy marketing tool. And the title of this disc is appropriate, too, because with the co-production help of founding Spyro Gyra keyboardist Tom Schuman, Oliver digs deep into a rich variety of influences for a multifaceted romp through the worlds of pop, jazz, urban/hip-hop, worldbeat, Brazilian, and Latin music. While focusing as always on his classic acoustic guitar and brilliant "vocalese" to convey the lead melodies on the instrumentals, he stretches into edgier blues territory with his lesser-heard electric on "In the Shade of Cool." Joining all-star guests like ...
