When Dr. Peter Venkman (Bill Murrary) and his Columbia University colleagues (Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson) are kicked out of their prestigious academic posts, they start a private practice as professional ghost-catchers. Although the three parascientists are idle for awhile, their television advertisements finally pay off when beautiful Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver) contracts them. It seems her apartment has become the entryway for ghastly ghosts and goofy ghouls hellbent on terrorizing New York City. Soon they're going to her rescue, trying to rid the city of the slimy creatures. GHOSTBUSTERS hit US screens in June of 1984 and went on to become one of the most successful comedy films of all time, spawning a sequel and a popular animated series. The screenplay for "Ghostbusters," written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, is said to take its premise from the Michael Winner-Jeffery Konvitz' 1977 feature film "The Sentinel." Ghostbusters Reviews: "...It's Murray's picture, as the popular comedian deadpans, ad libs and does an endearing array of physical schtick....Weaver is deliciously sexy..."
-- Lor., Variety "GHOSTBUSTERS is still a rounded, rousing entertainment."
-- Andy Webster, Premiere "What turned GHOSTBUSTERS into a classic was director Ivan Reitman's ability to stir genuine ghoulish scares into the clever dialogue and funny bits."
-- Paul S. Katz, Entertainment Weekly 3.5 stars out of 4 -- "An 80s phenomenon and classic comedy, with Bill Murray upstaging everything in his path..."Premiere Ghostbusters | Studio | Sony Pictures Home Entertainment | | Orig Year | 1984 | | DVD Encoding | Region 1 | | All Time Sales Rank | 16681 | | CD Universe Part number | 2943489 | | Catalog number | 09198 | | Discs | 1 | | Rating | PG (MPAA) | | Running Time | 107 Minutes | | Additional Info | Widescreen | | Movie Details | Color; Digital Sound; Stereo Sound; Letter Boxed; Widescreen |

One of the best comedies of all time. There wasn't a dull/un-funny moment in this movie, from the libray scene at the beginning to Mr. Stay Puft. Whenever I watch it, it still gives me a good laugh. If you appreciate good comedy, I recommend this item. Submitted by beeverdenatdejazzd.com (Ephrata, PA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.

Classic Comedy It's an oldie, but a goodie. I love it, and the my kids love it. Rick Moranis, Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd are hilarious. Great music, effects, and a zany storyline bring it all together. Submitted by tom.harding (Nova Scotia, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful. Ghostbusters film
$6.49 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz.
Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. But KIND OF BLUE was to prove the most influential, enduring work of its kind. There was just such a vibe about these 1959 sessions--Miles' lyric genius and burgeoning stardom, the innovative voicings and rarefied touch of pianist Bill Evans, the electrifying presence of Coltrane and Cannonball--that some thirty-plus years after its initial release, KIND OF BLUE is still recognized as Davis' point of departure towards jazz's less-explored regions.
Bill Evans' translucent chords and Paul Chambers' famous bass line herald the revolution that is "So What": Davis and Evans' taut, coiled lyricism stands in sharp relief to the saxophonists' labyrinthine elation. The fat, shimmering beat of the classic Evans/Chambers/Cobb rhythm team is an oasis of calm throughout the childish blues "Freddie Freeloader." Often credited to Davis, "Blue In Green" is an Evans masterpiece, in which the rhythmic oasis becomes a smoky mirage for Davis' minor reveries on muted horn. The waltzing "All Blues" is one of the smoothest, most swinging grooves in the history of jazz, while "Flamenco Sketches" reflects Miles fascination with the earthy melodies and brooding metaphors of the Iberian peninsula...a harbinger of his next masterpiece, SKETCHES OF SPAIN. KIND OF BLUE remains M
| | Melody Gardot My One And Only Thrill CD (2009)
Ghostbusters review
$10.99 Although the plaudits for Melody Gardot's debut album, WORRISOME HEART, were entirely justified, it sometimes seemed as if the young singer-songwriter's compelling personal story--hit by a car and severely injured at the age of 19, the aspiring fashion designer began playing piano and writing songs as part of her physical therapy--overshadowed her music. Gardot's second album, MY ONE AND ONLY THRILL, dispells that sense entirely: this gorgeous collection of lavishly orchestrated jazz-pop ballads is the work of a genuinely talented singer-songwriter. Gardot's melodic sense is greatly matured: opening track "Baby I'm A Fool" and "Lover Undercover" have the feel of new standards in the making. Similarly, she's a more expressive and self-assured singer, with a canny sense of timing and a sultry lower register that's particularly suited to a Julie London-style kittenish purr, as on "Our Love Is Easy." MY ONE AND ONLY THRILL is one of 2009's best jazz vocal releases.
Personnel: Melody Gardot (vocals, guitar, piano).
Audio Mixers: Al Schmitt; Steve Genewick.
| | Spyro Gyra Down The Wire CD (2009)
Ghostbusters DVD
$11.09 Those who've long ago written off Spyro Gyra as bland and/or commercial fluffy fusion will have to reassess their judgement after DOWN THE WIRE. While they haven't jettisoned their gregarious approach, the band concentrates here on capturing the spirit and energy of their live shows in the studio. Their tunefulness is intact, too. Spyro Gyra still combine rock, funk/R&B, and Latin styles with electric jazz, but their solos this time around pack a bit more punch.
Audio Remasterer: Martin Walters.
Spyro Gyra: Bonny B (vocals, drums, percussion); Julio Fernandez (guitar, guitars); Jay Beckinstein, Jay Beckenstein (saxophone); Tom Schuman (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, keyboards); Scott Ambush (bass guitar).
Audio Mixer: Martin Walters.

| | Willie Nelson Two Men With The Blues CD (2008)
Ghostbusters film
$15.49 TWO MEN WITH THE BLUES brings out both the jazziness that's long been a key element of Willie Nelson's sound (his standards album, STARDUST, remains one of his most acclaimed efforts) and the New Orleans-tinged, Louis Armstrong-esque bluesiness that's at the core of almost everything Wynton Marsalis has ever done (not counting that classical album!). Marsalis blows blistering, gutsy solos on Nelson's own classic tune "Night Life," and Willie sounds completely at home delivering a low-key version of the New Orleans jazz standard "Basin Street Blues." A version of the Ray Charles signature song "Georgia on My Mind" highlights the jazz-savvy chordal movement and country/blues base of the timeless composition. TWO MEN WITH THE BLUES is a successful sonic summit meeting, but the two camps represented were never truly that far apart to begin with.
Personnel: Willie Nelson (vocals, guitar); Wynton Marsalis (vocals, trumpet); Mickey Raphael (harmonica); Walter Blanding (saxophone); Dan Nimmer (piano); Carlos Henríquez (upright bass); Ali Muhammed Jackson (drums).
