From Britain's Hammer Studio, a remake of one of Conan Doyle's most famous and popular Sherlock Holmes stories. 4 stars The Hammer version of Sherlock Holmes
Hammer Films revived the classic horror movie with a cycle of productions starting in 1956. Apart from the use of colour film the overall budgets, the time spent on rehearsal and the amount of shooting days were very restricted for each film. The Hammer formula was therefore to deliver more of everything inexpensive. Blood and horror, graphic violence and not surprisingly sex as far as the censors would allow. This is the sure road to vulgarity and all Hammer films touched the vulgar to a degree. "The Hound of the Baskervilles" clearly shows the Hammer touch but fortunately in this movie the blend works well. It is a satisfying Sherlock Holmes movie and actually one of the best film versions of Conan Doyle's famous novel. Peter Cushing and Andre Morell are well cast as Holmes and Watson. Cushing is a dry intellectual Holmes, arrogant and self-confident but at the same time almost exploding with energy. Holmes just can't keep his body at rest at any time. Morell gives us a competent Watson without any comedy. The horror element is clearly there. The villains are very cruel and Dartmoor and Grimpen Mire are as treacherous as ever. Almost every character in the movie looks like he or she is hiding something. Dark shadows, mist and fog, strange satanic rituals performed in old ruins. Add the ominous howling of a strange and terrifying creature. The voluptuous actress Marla Landi completes the Hammer formula as Christopher Lee's love interest. And Lee looks smashing as an arrogant heir to the Baskerville estate. The film manuscript re-arranges the original novel somewhat without destroying it. The main point is still there. The rational and intellectual Sherlock Holmes doing battle with the dark and possibly supernatural forces of evil at Baskerville Hall. And this time Holmes is assisted by a doctor Watson NOT behaving like a bumbling fool. The dark and sinister tone is strengthened by the fact that a lot of the characters appear to be less than lovable. There is not much of a family friendly tone is this movie. Only the character Frankland offers some brief episodes of comedy. This is an old movie and it looks old. But it has atmosphere like a classic oil painting. It is a colourful and lively trip into the land of mystery and horror. It is one of the best Hammer films and one of the best Sherlock Holmes movies. The amount of blood, gore and sex looks tame by modern standards but the old standard did quite well for this movie.

In this visually creative space adventure from the team that would go on to give the world INDEPENDENCE DAY and GODZILLA, a timid, glasses-wearing Egyptologist (James Spader) uncovers an ancient portal to another planet and is dispatched there forthwith--along with blundering, clodfooted government troops (led by Kurt Russell). The downtrodden populace they encounter, ruled by godlike, androgynous King Ra (Jaye Davidson, in his first role after becoming a star in THE CRYING GAME), must be led to literacy and freedom; Ra must be defeated; the intellectual must find his machismo; and our boys must return to Earth. The first of 14 films pairing Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as the definitive Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, this version of THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES remains the most celebrated adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic mystery. When his uncle is found murdered on the grounds of the family estate, Sir Henry Baskerville (Richard Greene) arrives from abroad to claim his ancestral home on the fog-shrouded Devonshire moors. But family friend Dr. Mortimer (Lionel Atwill) brings Sir Henry to master sleuth Sherlock Holmes with fears for the young heir's life and tales of a family curse placed upon the Baskerville clan. Together they travel to the desolate Baskerville Hall and encounter a slew of mysterious goings-on, including a suspicious butler (John Carradine) and the ghost of a hound haunting the moors. Dripping with atmosphere, this suspenseful and absorbing film is one of the true gems of the ...

Hound Of The Baskervilles review
DVD $11.35  4 stars
Peter Weller stars in this urban sci-fi Western as Murphy, a good cop who literally gets shot to pieces while on duty and winds up reborn as a crime-fighting machine. An ambitious executive (Miguel Ferrer) at OCP, the corporation running the futuristic city of Detroit, fuses Murphy's torso with bulletproof steel limbs and rewires his brain with computer chips so he will have no will of his own. Murphy's former partner (Nancy Allen) tries to help RoboCop remember his human past, but his circuitry blocks whatever dim memories remain. Luckily, a chance encounter with one of his killers wakes up the human essence in RoboCop, causing him to rebel against his programming and commence on a one-cyborg mission of vengeance that leads all the way to the top of OCP. This second English-language film by Dutch director Paul Verhoeven is unremittingly brutal, darkly comic, and filled with bits of clever satire and pathos. A special highlight is the hilariously incompetent ED-209, RoboCop's main rival in the department of automated law enforcement. Considered by many critics to be one of the best films of its genre, ROBOCOP was followed by several sequels and a 1994 ...
