Recording information: Sol Studio, Cookham, England. Illustrator: Adrian Vandenberg. Legend has it after a failed audition with mega-group Thin Lizzy, Adrian Vandenberg went back to the drawing board and decided to start his own band. Poised with an axe to grind and several hard rock influences easily spotted from a mile away, Vandenberg and his band of gypsies were poised to take over the hard rock scene with their 1982 debut. Overall, Vandenberg is a fiery testament to Vandenberg's skill as a guitarist. He shreds with the best of them, taking cues from Hendrix, Page, and a little bit of Tony Iommi. Of course there are the gratuitous moments of guitar acrobatics ("Wait") and the obligatory power ballad ("Burning Heart") but that really doesn't detract too much from the band's main focus: to deliver a solid hard rock record that is easily one of the most underrated debut metal albums of the '80s. ~ Rob Theakston Vandenberg Songs | 1. | Your Love Is in Vain |

Vandenberg
$14.65 Steeler: Ron Keel (guitar, vocals), Yngwie Malmsteen (lead guitars), Rik Fox (bass, backing vocals), Mark Edwards (drums). Personnel: Ron Keel (vocals, guitar, electric guitar); Yngwie Malmsteen (guitar); Mark Edwards (drums); Peter Marrino, Rik Fox (background vocals). Recording information: Prairie Sun Studios, Cotati CA. On nearly all counts, the debut from Los Angeles heavy metal quartet Steeler is an unremarkable, even generic release; but what makes the album important is the presence of Swedish guitar virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen, which marks his official introduction to U.S. audiences. Malmsteen's playing -- which would later gain greater notoriety in the context of Alcatrazz and his own band Rising Force -- was nothing short of a revolution in guitar circles at the time of Steeler's release. While other rock guitarists were still clamoring to figure out Eddie Van Halen's tricks, Malmsteen's shocking virtuosity -- based on classical music as much as rock -- was something for which few were prepared. The story goes that Malmsteen was flown in at the last minute by producer Mike Varney to finish the album after the songs had already been written (by bandleader/lead singer Ron Keel) and recorded; Malmsteen quickly added his tracks and Steeler was released. Obviously, cliché-ridden songs like "On the Rox," "Born to Rock," and "Backseat Driver" -- based on predictable rock chord progressions -- bear none of the compositional complexity and classical trademarks of Malmsteen's writing, and they remain undistinguished except for the dazzling guitar solos. Of particular note is Malmsteen's stunning unaccompanied intro to "Hot on Your Heels," which offers a survey of Malmsteen's Bach- and Paganini-inspired soloing ideas, delivered with unbelievable velocity and stamina. And yet there is an undeniable grace and beauty in his playing which few could emulate -- the fluid, violinistic vibrato, florid arpeggiations, and purity of tone remain breathtaking today. For a
| | Vandenberg Alibi CD (1985)
Vandenberg
$9.69 Wounded Bird Records reissue of 1985 album, their third release and features the intense lead guitar work of Adrian.
Vandenberg: Adrian Vandenberg (guitar, synthesizer, background vocals); Bert Heerink (vocals); Dick Kemper (bass, background vocals); Jos Zoomer (drums, percussion). Personnel: Bert Heerink (vocals); Adrian Vandenberg (guitar, synthesizer); Jos Zoomer (drums, percussion). Recording information: Soundpush, Blaricum, The Netherlands. Photographer: Kees Tabak. By the time Alibi rolled around, Vandenberg was fast losing steam and creative ideas (though the cover with the Alligator bursting out from underground near ancient temples is a refreshing ode to surrealism in a metal dominated field of leather and makeup). The group had fallen prey to the then-contemporary, overly produced, highly glossed sound that glam metal was to bring to the forefront of commercial hard rock, and failed miserably at conforming to the sound (and the label's) demands. There are moments where the band still show traces of their original promise, but those are few and far between. Shortly after this, group founder and lead guitarist Adrian Vandenberg would disband the group and join David Coverdale's Whitesnake project at the pinnacle of the band's commercial success. Alibi is most certainly one for die-hard fans and Whitesnake collectors only. ~ Rob Theakston
| | Vandenberg Heading For A Storm CD (1983)

| | Gamma 1 CD (1979)
Vandenberg
$9.69 Gamma was the group that Ronnie Montrose started after his group Montrose broke up. They released three albums on Elektra records between 1979 and 1982. Gamma 1 hit the Billboard charts in 1979 and rose to #131. Wounded Bird. 2002.
Gamma: Davey Pattison (vocals); Ronnie Montrose (guitar); Jim Alcivar (synthesizer); Alan Fitzgerald (bass); Skip Gillette (percussion). Originally released on Elektra. Personnel: Davey Pattison (vocals); Ronnie Montrose (guitar); Jim Alcivar (keyboards, synthesizer); Skip Gillette (percussion). Recording information: Chateau Records. Photographer: Aaron Rapoport. For Gamma's debut on Elektra, the band picked Mickey Newbury's "Wish I Was" and Hollies/Linda Ronstadt songwriter Clint Ballard Jr.'s "I'm Alive," when maybe Newbury's "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" would have been more appropriate. As far as Ballard's contribution goes, the more familiar "You're No Good" might've worked better than "I'm Alive," creativity not being Gamma's strong suit. With such a cool name as Gamma, the rays that turned Bruce Banner into the Hulk, one might expect Ronnie Montrose to come up with a nice mutated blend of hard-edged Pink Floyd meets Hawkwind. No such luck. The opening track, "Thunder and Lightning," has all the pedestrian elements of a marriage between Foreigner and Bad Company, the mainstream meets the mundane. Ken Scott's production work leaves empty spaces in between the guitar crunch and the keyboard fills, with the work feeling unfinished or rushed. The Hollies' "I'm Alive" is better suited to that band; it drives at a good tempo here but the sound is thin and much too derivative, with backing vocal effects on the verses that simply annoy. The eight songs are mostly from the pen of Montrose, with singer Davey Pattison involved in three of the tunes. Things really get bad on Pattison's one solo composition, the five-minute "No Tears," as the band goes into the riff from Bad Company's second h
| | Axe Nemesis CD (1983)
Vandenberg
$10.49 Axe includes: Mike Osborne (vocals, guitar); Edgar Riley (vocals, keyboard). Personnel: Mike Osborne, Bobby Barth (vocals, guitar); Edgar Riley (vocals, keyboards); Wayne Haner (bass guitar); Teddy Mueller (drums). Recording information: Bee Jay Recording Studio, Orlando, FL; Subterrenean Studios, Ann Arbor, MI. Photographer: Mark Hanauer. An electrifying stew of hard rock, biker rock, Southern rock, and keyboard rock (we're talking 1983 after all), Nemesis may easily be Axe's defining statement: The band wants nothing more than airwave domination and to come into your town to help you party down. Ripped opener "Heat in the Street" bears a similar title to "Rock 'N' Roll Party in the Streets," Axe's biggest-ever hit from their previous offering, Offering (the CD reissue erroneously christens the song "Heat in the Night" but all that matters is Nemesis made it to disc), yet despite the obvious leitmotif, nothing can touch this red-hot, hard luck, fugitive tale which takes every right turn while crashing and burning in a league with the immortal Motörhead; Axe is always geared for the radio, though, throwing in keys and vocoder for a walloping slab of two-ton American rock. "Eagle Flies Alone" soars skyward as endearingly as fellow knuckle-head Sammy Hagar's "Eagles Fly," only Axe kicks it out four years earlier. Axe also beats the Crüe to bat with the lascivious "Girls Girls Girls" (backing vocals by the Mountain Jack Sluggettes). "Foolin' Your Mama Again" sneaks around a melodic outlaw chorus, and the hard-working Edgar Winter boogie, "Keep Playing That Rock 'n' Roll" is still another great, innocuous burner. The boys prove to be utterly fearless and amiable, forcing keys on guitars while swerving through a blissful riot of clichéd lyrics. "Masquerade" almost ends the LP on a slow ride (replete with a cell-phone ring?) before the drop-dead pounder "Midnight" fires things up again. Contrary to the intimidating cover art, Nemesis remains naughty but slick,
| | Axe Offering CD (1981)
Vandenberg
$10.49 Axe were a metal rock band led by vocalist Edgar Riley and guitarist Bobby Barth. They released numerous albums in the 80's and have had a cult following ever since. Their two biggest albums were Offering (1982) & Nemesis (1983), their only Billboard charting albums. Offering rose to # 81 in 1982. First time on CD. Wounded Bird. 2003.
Axe includes: Edgar Riley (vocals); Bobby Barth. Personnel: Mike Osborne, Bobby Barth (vocals, guitar); Edgar Riley (vocals, keyboards); Teddy Mueller (drums). Audio Mixers: Bobby Barth; Al Nalli; Andy de Ganahl. Recording information: Bee Jay Recording Studio, Orlando, FL. Kicking off with their raison d'etre "Rock 'n' Roll Party in the Street," Offering proved to be the moment of glory for Florida's Axe. That single remains a great slice of heartland party rock, and the rest of the record ably falls in line. While the quaint "Video Inspiration" berates artificial imagery, "Jennifer" serenades a screen star; but Axe doesn't let such cerebral quandaries get in the way of booty-shaking boogie like the smoking run-through of Montrose's "I Got the Fire" (later covered by Iron Maiden and Rest in Pieces) and the summer-in-the-city riot selection "Burn the City Down." "Holdin' On" falls in the ol' reliable "love 'em and leave 'em" category while "Now or Never" is the kind of blatant Top 40 bid heavy bands used to sneak onto records that resulted in the twilight era of AOR, which backfired into groups attempting to be as intense as their album artwork and spurning the radio. Axe offers an innocent, innocuous, and endearing escape, conjuring muscle cars and convenience stores; thus these sincere soldiers of the '80s delete bins deserve preservation on CD. ~ Whitney Z. Recording information: Mds Recording, Ajax, Ontario, Canada; The Recording House, Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. Photographers: Jason Stroud; Andy Guglielmo. A good many bands seem to be intent on merging classical/symphonic styles with heavy metal. This group does a much better job than many at it. The central reasons that their music seems more immediate is that they appear to have a genuine interest in the classical end of things, while a lot of other bands seem to just lean on it as a way to give class and finesse to their metal. The funny thing is, the genuine and appreciative nature that these guys seem to give to those inspirations add an air of class all their own to this release. One of the unusual points of the CD is an all-instrumental cover of the Led Zeppelin standard "Immigrant Song." The cut is more of a complete working than just a cover, and if you approach listening to it with an open mind, it is a very effective piece. All in all, this is a superior album in the neo-classically tinged metal genre. ~ Gary Hill
| | Slackers Close My Eyes CD (2003)
Vandenberg
$10.35 The fourth studio recorded album for Hellcat from New York ska-punk faves, the Slackers. Twelve smoking tracks that feature a mix of Jamaican rhythms, reggae, calypso and rocksteady flair and strong sense of modern groove styles. Digipak. Hellcat. 2003.
The Slackers: Victor Ruggiero (vocals, harmonica, melodica, piano, organ, percussion); Marc Lynn (vocals); Thomas John Scanlon (guitar); David Hillyard (saxophone); Glen Pine (trombone, background vocals); Marcus Geard (bass, Chapman stick, background vocals); Allen Tebout (drums). Recorded at Noise New York, Mount Vernon, New York and Landmark Studios, Brooklyn, New York. Personnel: Victor Ruggiero (vocals, harmonica, melodica, piano, organ, percussion, background vocals); Marq Lyn (vocals, background vocals); Thomas John Scanlon (guitar); David Hilyard (saxophone); Rolf Langsjoen (trumpet); Glen Pine (trombone, background vocals); Glen Adams (organ); Allen Teboul (drums); Larry McDonald (percussion); Marcus Geard (background vocals). Audio Mixers: Sidney Mills; Victor Ruggiero. Liner Note Author: Jack Keronac. Recording information: Noise New York, Mount Vernon, NY. Editor: Noah Schachtman. The Slackers return with Close My Eyes, and it might be their most mature album yet. Whether that's a compliment or a slight depends on your opinion of ska, and if you say you don't have one, you're lying. Eyes mixes dub and ska rhythms with Vic Ruggiero's increasingly conventional songwriting, which can be really effective, as it is with the concise, soulful "Mommy." But sometimes the Slackers seem to slip in the integration department. The puttering, rocksteady-inspired groove of "Axes," for example, seems completely disconnected from Ruggiero's conventional (and clunky) vocals -- the track could have easily been an instrumental. And while the band's ruminations on 9/11 are no doubt inspired, "Real War" gets a bit uncomfortable when it begins pleading for racial equality from warmongering politicians. The sentiment is respectable, to be sure. But the track's by-the-numbers dub begins to work against it, mostly because it seems to rest on your perceptions of past reggae/dub protest songs. This is a persistent issue with the third wave and beyond, since the music is by design tradition-minded but still wants to push things forward like any functional band would. The Slackers may or may not have succeeded at achieving this balance, but they've likely made an album their established fan base will love, if nothing else. Close My Eyes is also perfectly recorded, aping the flat, splashy Studio One sound. This is especially apparent on the opening and closing instrumentals, as well as the light dub of "Lazy Woman." ~ Johnny Loftus
