The red-skied cityscape depicted on this album's cover doesn't suggest much beyond some sort of generic modern alternative rock or glossy emo recording (and having the word "tragedy" in the title reinforces suspicions that it's going to be the latter). True, this is "modern rock" in the sense that its roots don't really go back any further than the early '90s: Weezer, Quicksand, and Helmet are all mentioned in the press sheet as reference points, and those give you a decent idea what to expect. Not the great, late '70s San Francisco punk band, this new, young Detroit trio are OK heirs to the moniker -- even if their brand of punk is the poppy type found occasionally in the charts, rather than the classic Social D-like '77 sound. But for whatever resemblance they have to the sort of groups that ultimately bore me, like Green Day or Sum 41, the new N.A. have a lot more heart-felt prodding than either, more in that stronger Descendents/All or Pointed Sticks kind of likability. It's that real pop sense to their punk, plus sharp playing, that makes them good. It's little things, too, like the "ahhhhhhh" backing vocals on "Reflection" and the bouncier rhythms of the keyboard-enhanced "Tonight," or the six-eight waltz-timed "One Last Chance." Likewise the soaring hook of "Playing With Fire." And though they dress like typical hardcore toughs without a brain between them, the sweet-boy caring lyrics written and sung by Colin Mattson totally belies that -- proof again that it's wrong to judge books by their sartorial covers. Formed in 1996 and formerly known as "The Milkmen" they have played at a variety of venues in the metro area and regionally. Some of their most notable live performances include the legendary CBGBs in NYC, NEMO 2002 in Boston, MOBfest 2K2 in Chicago, The Annual Detroit Punkfest and a spot on the Ernie Ball stage of the 2000 Vans Warped Tour. As part of the Warped Tour, they were entered into a contest based on the online voting of fans who attended. Out of the 300+ bands entered, No Alternative finished in the top 20. They were invited back for the 2002 Warped Tour's final show in Detroit.They have been featured in The Detroit News, Real Detroit, Rollor Magazine and others.
