Epic Records definitely did its homework before unleashing B2K into the pop market. The boy band of clean-cut and suave young black men is everything a marketing department dreams about: attractive teens-becoming-men who make the girls melt with a little bit of a rugged, tough-guy attitude and flashy clothes. Of course, there are also the dance beats that are as much dance-pop as hip-hop; in fact, you might even wager a bet that the many producers and songwriters on this album had been listening to a bit of Craig David and other British 2-step pop stars. Plus, the group members are capable singers as well, which is another bonus. Overall, with the girl-magnet looks, the trendy radio-ready production, and the limitless vocal hooks, Epic Records has all the makings of pop stardom in B2K, including a market-testing hit single in "Uh Huh" that set the stage for the group's debut album. B2K, a self-titled album, gets off to a good start, jumping right into some of its best songs -- "Gots ta Be," "Understanding," and "Why I Love You" -- before unleashing the album highlight, the aforementioned "Uh Huh." From there, the album gets progressively long-winded, running through 17 songs in total, none of them overly distinct. Of course, that's the nature of pop albums, particularly boy band albums, and B2K definitely follows in the grand tradition of its predecessors: Jagged Edge, Dru Hill, Blackstreet, and Bell Biv Devoe. ~ Jason Birchmeier
Now these guys are smooth. Though the four lads who make up B2K may not look old enough to shave, they've already got their mack daddy rap down cold, and for a romantic R&B group, that's a crucial point. From a purely sonic viewpoint, they set the stage for seduction perfectly with rhythms that strike just the right balance between sensuality and gentle prodding, and lush, sparkling guitar and keyboard splashes. Thematically, they really bring the game home; letting girls know what they need on "Understanding," letting them know that B2K knows what women want on "Gots Ta Be," and even going so far as to include such ultra-confident fare as the very self-explanatory "B2K is Hot." Did we mention that the band's official website is called B2Klovesyou.com? Parents, lock up your daughters, B2K has arrived.

Q (8/02, p.120) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...A tried-and-tested yet dextrous formula of soul/R&B stylings, glutinous harmonies and cloying sentimentality...done with relative sensativity and suss..."

Long departed for lucrative solo careers, Snoop Dogg's protégé duo of Daz Dillinger and Kurupt, better known as Tha Dogg Pound, reunite for CALI IZ ACTIVE, the duo's first official album since their sophomore effort, 2002. Crossing up their long-held West Coast style with technically superior production by Swizz Beats, Southern crunk courtesy of David Banner and Jazze Pha, and many more high-profile guest shots, CALI IZ ACTIVE serves as a wake-up call for California, in particular Long Beach County, to resume the throne as holders of the country's most dominant rap sound--G Funk. The funk reigns supreme on tracks like "Hard on a Hoe," but finds new life in sped-up, crunked out tracks like "It's Craccin' All Night" and "Sittin' on 23'z."
With its crooked, crooked West Coast beat and the glorious TGIF chorus thrown on top of it, lead single "Cali Iz Active" came on the scene and ruled every beatbox that knew what was up. But just like the cover artwork to the album Cali Iz Active, the wicked title cut misrepresents what is really a reunion of the original Dogg Pound duo, Daz Dillinger and Kurupt, with only a couple of appearances by executive producer Snoop Dogg. One listen through this heat-carrying album and it doesn't matter much, since the long-estranged Daz and Kurupt are lyrically inspired here, have lost none of their chemistry, and their choices for producers and guest stars are either smart or risky. Falling into the latter category is Diddy's appearance on "It's Craccin All Night," a surprisingly successful track that figures into the handful of highlights. "Sittin on 23z" kicks its way into this category thanks to a monstrous beat by Swizz Beatz that shakes the foundations. The cuts with David Banner and Paul Wall do a good job of blending Southern and West Coast attitudes, but the West Coast heads are going to appreciate the Ice Cube, Nate Dogg, and Lady of Rage guest shots the most, since they brilliantly recall a time when G-funk ruled all. While it's a track or two too long, Cali Iz Active is arguably the strongest album from the crew and a West Coast fiend's dream come true. ~ David Jeffries

All Over You
Caravan All Over You CD  (2000) (Import) United Kingdom

Caravan: Pye Hastings, Geoffrey Richardson, David Sinclair, Jimmy Hastings, Richard Couhlan.
Includes liner notes by Jeremy Clarkson.
Whenever "classic rock" bands choose to make new renderings of their past glories, the results are infamously less than favorable. Indeed, Caravan purists and erstwhile enthusiasts may find it necessary to re-evaluate All Over You -- and companion release All Over You...Too -- within their respective standards. Contained within are several acoustic-based overhauls of a seemingly well-chosen selection of Caravan's most enduring sides, while the HTD label's remastered CD also contains two additional sides. The tracks primarily fall into two distinct categories: recent renderings of otherwise familiar titles in one camp and the decidedly unsuccessful incorporation of samples -- à la hip-hop -- in the other. In what is assuredly an attempt to update and modernize their sound, the somewhat droning synthesized percussion and studio-manipulated wankery severely detract from Caravan's exceedingly crafted compositions. Primary among the offenders is the "For Richard" suite. The use of an arguably over-the-top and emphatically in-your-face throbbing bassline (think Nine Inch Nails and Metallica) insensitively mows down an otherwise intricate arrangement. Conversely, All Over You does underscore several moments of organic brilliance as a few Caravan standards are uncorked like a proverbial vintage wine. "Place of My Own," "In the Land of Grey and Pink," and a live performance of the now quasi-metal "Memory Lain, Hugh"/"Headloss" combo benefit from this revisitation. ~ Lindsay Planer
