Req resurfaced on the left-leaning Warp after two LPs recorded for big beat boutique Skint, and the results put to shame any notions of underground rap practiced by Rawkus or Def Jux. Though his sub-basement sound aesthetic won't win him any crossover converts, Sketchbook makes a good listen out of downtempo beatbox musings, similar to DJ Vadim's earliest work. The beats have an absence of sound quality, reminiscent of tape decks dusty with age, and there's really not much else happening: a few odd keys, melodica, bells, and occasionally some light scratching far away in the background. Those looking for label context will find much to enjoy, since Warp's notion of avant-beat listening music makes far more sense for a producer like Req than the go-go party music of Skint. ~ John Bush
Live RecordingCMJ (4/8/02, p.12) - "...perfect for headphone listening under the influence of a mind-altering substance..." NME (Magazine) (4/6/02, p.36) - 7 out of 10 - "...Skeletal ecelcticism rooted in an appropriation of cold horror and nocturnal hip-hop..." Sketchbook Review

Sketchbook album
$15.65 On THE BLUEPRINT 3, still unretired Jay-Z announces "the only rapper to rewrite history without a pen." It's a standard Jigga boast, but the Brooklyn icon has earned the bragging by backing it up, particularly on his gold-label, top-shelf BLUEPRINT series. Ever-ready for battle, Jay-Z takes on autotune, crossover radio, and many other hip-hop concerns with the gloriously jagged rap elan for which he's become known.
When Jay-Z first made a series out of his best album, 2001's The Blueprint, it became a game of high expectations. The first volume saw Jay-Z as vital as he'd ever been, storming back to the hardcore after a ...

EARTH BIO:Los Angeles’ favorite bilingual funk-dance-rock duo Spigga are gearing up for a series of West Coast dates in support of their just-released album ‘06105: The Mixtape’ (Supermercado23/Navarre Corp.) Making music for iPods that ache to be boomboxes, Spigga is led by modern day renaissance man Giovanny Blanco (host/producer of the popular “LATV Live” program; former double-time doing frontman of Latin punk merrymakers Viva Malpache). The group is rounded out by Blanco’s collaborator Jaswho?, a house music master (Soulmine Records) who brings ample grooves to the Spigga table. Friends and musical collaborators since they met in Hartford Public High School back in the late 80’s, California transplants Blanco and Jaswho? named the album ‘06105’ as a shout-out to their Connecticut hometown. Spigga are continuing to make waves for themselves, most recently with their bilingual cover of “People of the Sun” for the new Rage Against the Machine tribute ...
