In September 2001, the alternative pop/rock band Jars of Clay performed their first concert in over a year. The event served to foreshadow the group's March 2002 release The Eleventh Hour, an album heralded as comparable to the band's debut project. With this release, Jars of Clay -- composed of members Dan Haseltine, Matt Odmark, Charlie Lowell, and Stephen Mason -- held fast to the creative reins from start to finish. Serving as writers, producers, designers, and directors, the band was able to return to the vision which drove their self-titled debut. The result was a collection of 11 songs unlike any released from the band since their 1995 album. Musically, the project blends alternative rock and pop with elements of folk. Lyrically, it examines aspects of honesty and transparency, exploring human longing. The album opens with the edgy pop track "Disappear," a song expressing the difficulty people face in accepting the existence of unconditional love. Other notable tracks include the first radio single, "I Need You," a driving and passionate expression of a deep desire for God, and the tender yet haunting ballad "Scarlet." The Eleventh Hour is a much needed album from Jars of Clay. It is a return to the elements that drove the sudden success of the band in 1994 and 1995. ~ Ashleigh Kittle Jars of Clay made their name as a Christian rock band, but even from the start that created all sorts of incorrect assumptions about the group. With THE ELEVENTH HOUR, they almost completely cast off that mantle, calling for a general reassessment of the band by those who lumped them in with the "God squad." At this point, they're no more overtly spiritual than Creed. Beyond one song referencing a need to pray, this is very secular fare. That's not to say that JOC have suddenly transformed into party animals singing about sex, drugs and rock & roll. They're still thoughtful young men who wrap their introspection in plangent electric and acoustic guitars and accessible pop-rock choruses. "Revolution," for example, examines the need for self-confidence over a raucous, somewhat Smash Mouth-like arrangement, while other songs move through folk-rock, Americana, and driving modern rock. Jars of Clay expand their scope on THE ELEVENTH HOUR without sacrificing any of their drive.

Collective Soul: Dean Roland, Ed Roland, Will Turpin, Shane Evans, Joel Kosche. Audio Mixer: Zack Odom. Photographer: Lee Clower. If Collective Soul's 2004 comeback album, Youth, was a splashy, glammy guitar rock record, its EP sequel, From the Ground Up -- arriving just six months later -- is its opposite, a gentle, laid-back set of acoustic tunes. But with the exception of "Youth," which may have been intended as the title song for the proper album, there are no new songs here: the ...

| | Rhythm Riot! CD (2002)
Eleventh Hour
$16.85 Performers include: The Bobbettes, Joe Houston, Sam Butera, The Champs, Teenagers, Frankie Ford, Big Jay McNeely, Wanda Jackson, Nappy Brown, The Treniers, Hal Singer, Jimmy McCracklin, Rosco Gordon. The pole around which the this CD of '50s rock'n'roll and R&B is wound? It's Rhythm Riot, a British "1950s Rhythm & Blues and Roots Rock'n'Roll Weekend," a festival that was inaugurated in 1997. This 25-track disc has music recorded -- in the 1950s, not at the festival itself -- by 21 artists who appeared at the event during its first five years. Given the criteria for inclusion, it's inevitably a rather eccentric mix of material, though the quality is generally high. It tilts toward the R&B end of things, actually, with such not-quite-rock early-to-mid-'50s R&B and jump blues sides by the likes of Joe Houston, the Treniers, Nappy Brown, Big Jay McNeely, Rosco Gordon, and Jimmy McCracklin. Yet there's also a bit of rockabilly from Wanda Jackson (whose "Baby Loves Him" is a highlight) and Sid King; straight rock'n'roll from the Bobbettes, Frankie Ford, and the Champs; doo wop from Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers; and hillbilly on the verge of rockabilly from Hardrock Gunter. There are big hits here, like Frankie Lymon's "Why Do Fools Fall in Love," the Champs' "Tequila," Frankie Ford's "Sea Cruise," and the Bobbettes' "Mr. Lee." But there are far more R&B obscurities, some of them genuinely excellent (Joe Houston's instrumental "All Night Long," the Treniers' "Rockin' Is Our Business"); others more on the enjoyably generic side. And there are some artists who've never gotten more than limited cult recognition, like ...
